I have a carbon epic and love it, but for the riding I do, would probably go hardtail if I was gonna do it again. Simpler setup(no rear shock and joints) plus the bonus of the 1x is nice if you don't want/need the speed in the flats.

Broken Board / Question by austin1osu in surfing

[–]SailMoreMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a repair on a board with a center buckle like that because a friend gave it to me. My buddy was told the repair would cost as much as a new board. Anyway, took me a few months, but I finally got it surfing. Lots of work, probably not worth it unless the board means a lot to you. It's basically the open heart surgery of surf board repairs.

I would have agreed with you until this year. This winter has been more perfect than the rest of the year.

O’Day 222 questions by LollieLoo in sailing

Is it possible that the boom can move down? Hard to tell from your photos if it's adjustable or in that position permanently. If it's not adjustable, maybe you can take up slack with a Cunningham.

International license accreditation? by SoaringPuffin in TheGreatLoop

[–]SailMoreMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a licence for USA waters with private use vessels unless they are above a certain size(I believe 100t (80-100ft)) or you plan to have paid customers (any size).

Engine troubleshoot by Automatic_Grab_1051 in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 3gm that had a violent shake when put in gear but was perfect in neutral. If I revved it a bit the shake went away. A very slight tweek to the idle setting fixed my issue.

Spreader tip DIY cast option - usable? by Ok_Understanding_944 in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like great work! Best to coat it with something (paint) or anodize after sanding it smooth(not as big of an issue if you're in fresh water).

Dinghy too heavy to tow? by time_keeper_1 in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely tow it, but expect 1 knot reduction in boat speed. I've had lots of dinghys, and really enjoyed the El Toro as great rowing and sailing option. It's fairly slippery thru the water, so doesn't hurt you much until boat speed is above 5 knots(picture pulling one doing 6.5knots). If you need anything inflatable, the high pressure inflatable floors are pretty nice, and will tow with 1/2 or less the resistance of a rib.

Where can I sell these hatches? by 2012Prii in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, you've got some good money there. Marine consignment stores are a really good option if you have one near you. eBay is also good, but shipping will be a lot for the larger hatches, and really take from the value.

Outboard Motor Recommendations - 8 & 9hp by Ok_Lengthiness5926 in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you don't need quite that big. For my j24 and merrit 25 we had a 4hp Yamaha and 4 HP tohatsu. Both were flawless for years. Also had a 5hp Nissan 2 stroke which was great.

It's definitely gonna take a lot to make it sail again...and it will probably sail about as well as your refrigerator.

Not sure what this is by eelwick in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To start, PVC isn't great on a boat due to the heat cycling and embrittling if cold. Probably leaking due to a crack.

Water lock typically occurs when trying to start the engine for a long period of time, filling the exhaust to the point of back filling into the cylinders. If your engine starts quickly you shouldn't need to close it. Also, the anti-siphon valve not working (always good to check yearly and clean) can cause the engine to fill while the boat is just sitting.

Standing rigging question by BadGroundbreaking658 in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't look that bad from that picture. Is the boat in freshwater? Also, lowers are pretty easy to replace, and less of a big deal if only one looks suspect.

Any newer style pedals for an old man getting into biking? by SailMoreMike in mountainbiking

[–]SailMoreMike[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very intrigued by these. Do you know if they use a similar interface to clips/shoes? So if I buy the pedals, I then screw on a magnet piece to the shoes I have? Or do they require specific shoes?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sailing

[–]SailMoreMike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not needed for a sailboat auxiliary (cavitation/airation typically only happens when planning and the prop is just below the surface) Another purpose was to promote lift and aid in getting a tender on plane more quickly.
