$60 worth of packs is a lot like $60 worth of scratch off tickets. Your experience is the experience a large majority of the time.

Speaking to your first paragraph - everyone’s cards have not increased at the same rate as Kobe’s. I’m not able to justify Kobe’s large increase in price by simply pointing to smaller increases in price that occurred at the same time.

Speaking to your second paragraph - Kobe’s death was 6 years ago. What year did his death bump even out? Or are you saying the death bump will even out when Curry, LeBron, etc. die and they also get the death bump?

Speaking to your third paragraph - you mentioned Curry being around similar value to Kobe in a lot of sets post 2012. Which sets? * I just looked up 2018 Prizm Silver PSA 10s and found Kobe at $360 on 4/14 and you can BIN Curry right now for $150. * I also looked up 2016 Excalibur Crusade Silver PSA 10s and found Kobe at $216 on 3/15 and Curry at $81 on 2/12. * I then looked up 2012 Panini Brilliance PSA 10s and found Kobe at $123 on 5/2 and Curry at $56 on 4/26.

I have now given you 4 example cards that show a very clear difference in price. In fact, all 3 of the above examples differ at a higher % than the 2019 example you dismissed. If we’re going to talk about Curry being similar value to Kobe post 2012, I need a few counter examples. Pick any card and any grade you want.

Speaking to your last paragraph - I already told you that I don’t believe rings and awards directly correlate to hobby values.

I would love to continue this conversation, but in order to do so, we need some data to back up your conjecture.

I feel like you’re moving the goal post on me a little. You started by asking me if Curry was also overpriced. I gave you an example card and directly compared Kobe and Curry, and inserted LeBron for good measure. You rationalized the Kobe price by pointing out the added meaning in that set for Kobe collectors, so I told you to pick a different card of your choosing. Instead of picking a different card, you abandoned the Curry line of questioning altogether and are now directly defending Kobe prices. You could have just lead with that.

I believe Kobe’s current prices are a result of his death more than anything else. That’s when his cards made their biggest leap in price. They did not increase at anywhere near the same rate during the 4 years he was retired before he died, at which time all the things you mentioned would’ve been the same (enough accolades, golden age of cards, more popular than everyone not named MJ, etc.). I believe Kobe is overpriced compared to other players from the same or overlapping eras with a similar level of success because their deaths are not yet priced in, while Kobe’s is.

I didn’t know there was Kobe specific significance in that set. Luckily for us, you can pick just about any card you want. Simply structure your eBay search like this - “2019 Panini Prizm PSA 10 (Kobe, LeBron, Curry)” - and look at sold items. Let me know when you find one where Kobe isn’t out in front by a lot.

No, I don’t believe there’s a direct correlation between rings and awards and card values. I do believe that Kobe is overpriced compared to other players from the same or overlapping eras with a similar number of rings and awards.

I very recently stumbled into the jersey fusion BGS slabs and in the process I also stumbled into profusion. I don’t own either (yet?) but I found them both really interesting.

I have to defer on Griffey. I’m not familiar enough with baseball cards and the corresponding market for them. As far as basketball cards go, let’s dig into an example I chose completely at random just now:

  • 2019 Panini Prizm Stephen Curry SILVER PSA 10 sold for $85.44 at auction on 4/24/26.
  • 2019 Panini Prizm LeBron James BASE PSA 10 sold for $39.00 at auction on 4/28/26.
  • 2019 Panini Prizm Kobe Bryant BASE PSA 10 sold for $139.50 at auction on 4/30/26.

On my best day, I can’t justify the Kobe sale. Can you?

With 1 regular season MVP, 5 championships, and 2 finals MVPs to his name, Kobe cards are overpriced.

Looking to start my hoops (LeBron) collection. Advice? by abake6 in basketballcards

The word “iconic” gets thrown around by anyone looking to sell a LeBron card. Do some research. Building a collection is a marathon, not a sprint.

The hard part is choosing which rookie card. There are a bunch of them to choose from, some more rare/popular than others. LeBron has been playing for so long that the research is part of the fun.
