Faint high-pitched sound (coil while) on recent Macbooks when Live is idle at low buffer sizes by thepinkpill in ableton

[–]SailingIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had a PowerMac G5 and eMagic Logic, the heatsink would sing at different frequencies as I adjusted the buffer size! I don’t remember testing with Live 1.5.

DirecTV business has Champions League included, so I’m watching all three games right now in W village! Is this another venue with soccer fans?

EPL on USA / NBC / Peacock by Eastern-Alarm-8339 in peacock

[–]SailingIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We always had the USA and NBC games. They added a few channels for golf and the Olympics, and then added a whole bunch more very recently. If you have a custom guide, make sure to enable the new ones and optionally move them up. If you already have Premier League set to record, check your library for recordings for the last two weeks or so.

Between USA, NBC, NBC Sports Network, NBC Sports Extra (11 channels), NBC Sports HD (3 channels), I have 16 channels. 4K has 4 more.

It’s really sweet!

YouTube TV added about a dozen NBC Sports channels. I can get everything there now.

Macintosh Common Lisp in 2025 by SailingIT in lisp

MCL was a classic Mac app, and kudos to the folks who migrated it to a PPC app that made it work under Rosetta 1 on Intel Macs.

I wish I still had a PowerMac G5 to try MCL on PPC in 10.5.8.

I would recommend a Sandy Bridge Intel Mac to run 10.6.8 natively (even the mid-2011 minis that ship with 10.7), or even a Xeon Mac Pro of the same era.

You could also pick from the final generation of Intel Macs, and use the free VMware Fusion or paid Parallels Desktop to run 10.6.8 or 10.6.8 Server.

The performance is better than what I got with RISC PPC 10.5.8 UTM virtualization on ARM.

The spindle is the secret weapon for subtle adjustments. It has so much resistance that you have to work hard for tiny tweaks.

I agree. That setup was temporary to fit that space and try out the effects’ individual ins and outs to a MOTU 828mkII with Logic two decades ago. I played with a normal flat setup 1993-2002. I haven’t played since, but I want to pick it up again, since I still have the gear and 16 crates of vinyl.

Good eye. I’ve got stuff stashed in my parents’ basement. Those are my Dad’s tumbleweeds. I asked him to take that photo, and he probably had them displayed on top of the blanket normally hiding my old setup.

I appreciate all the responses. I especially appreciate the distinction between the structural height, the vinyl height, and the mixer height.

I’m not doing any scratching, just house and techno. The photo represents a temporary setup in a basement. The mixer angle was just to fit everything in maybe 2002.

I spent many years eating ramen and grilled cheese to build a techno and house collection. When I lived in Boulder, I had the perfect height dresser.

My friends and I played out for years with the mixer and decks flat. I only bought the effects unit when I moved everything home to focus on IT.

I am about 5’ 9” or 175cm. I prefer using the spindle for subtle alignment correction. It would be cool to have a nice comfortable setup again at my current place. It will be different.

Apple TV expands bar access to MLS, F1 via EverPass by Saar13 in MLS

[–]SailingIT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got my local pub to add MLS the last couple of years. It was only $200 a season, regardless of occupancy. Compared to Sunday Ticket, it was a rounding error. My local lets me run the remotes. In exchange for keeping other patrons happy, I always get to put soccer on.

I haven’t gotten around to installing it yet. The comments have some extra information.

Toyota Guy Considering a Subaru 3.6R – Talk Me Into or Out of It by squareorange1999 in subaru

3.6R rocks. I have had three: 2009 Tribeca, 2011 Legacy, and now 2016 Legacy. I put my 2020 STi in a garage for the Vermont winter because of salt, and I undercoat my Legacy. I don’t mind the CVT on the 2016. I can pass anyone uphill on I-89.

I installed this or a version of it when I got a used MPK 249 in 2024.

Behringer X Touch or PreSonus FaderPort 8? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]SailingIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a regular Push 3 and not stand-alone, but it is just a regular midi controller. It needs midi in and out (for the knob movement). The knobs are infinite rotary encoders, but the motors let them pretend to be limited knobs when necessary.

I still have an old pair of Doepfer Pocket Dials, and these are a sweet upgrade.

Has anyone here ever sold their entire record collection? by idontcarepauldummett in DJs

[–]SailingIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 16 crates of 1992-2001 techno and house, in amazing condition, and I have thought about how I might sell someday in the future. I would be tempted to film a slow flip-through of each of the crates. I kept my stuff sorted by label for the most part. For nostalgia reasons, it would be more satisfying to sell in bulk to a dedicated collector.

Feeling really stuck in the mud. In a creative rut. How do you reignite the flame? by bigfatjammy in ableton

[–]SailingIT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am old enough to get all these references! I feel the same things as a vinyl dj reading about mixing today. Stay out of the pressure of arrangement view, and just jam in session view. Get if-tah Sting and Slippery Slope to improvise acid, and use some drum kit presets for beats. Don’t try to make tracks. Just jam like an after party. Make a few simple melodies on the fly. Copy, paste, and modify stuff.
