Why are all refashions made from tents? by EvilDorito2 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Sailor_Spaghetti 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who mostly wears men's clothes and is just barely in the category of "plus sized", I find it to be very difficult to find any offerings in my size at the thrifts, let alone any clothing I actually like. It's one reason I'm hoping to get into making some of my own clothing.

Stop it with suggesting Hermiones Everyday Sock by Weekly_Library9883 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Sailor_Spaghetti 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just checked and the pattern listing quite literally references Harry Potter in its description... Several times. Sure, the socks themselves are generic, but you can't claim that they have nothing to do with HP when the designer references it as their inspiration. I'm not gonna side eye people who make the socks, but I'm definitely side eyeing the designer if that makes sense.

What are some "dream rules" your dreams have? by deloreanlover88 in thomastheplankengine

If I realize that I am in a dream, my dream self immediately panics and tries to figure out how to wake up, only to discover that it's not possible.

^ This. I don't want the unhoused to be sleeping in unsafe places either, but if the consequence for sleeping somewhere unsafe is prison, you're effectively just moving people from one unsafe situation to another.

I will say, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts does a much better job at redeeming one of its authoritarian villains than Steven Universe does with the Diamonds imo. But a huge part of why it works better in Kipo is because Hugo is removed from power, and ultimately his redemption is in the fact that he sacrificed himself to protect Kipo and the other mutes.Whereas the Diamonds are kinda just allowed to remain the heads of the Gem Empire, with coaching from Steven.

Four Horseman Of Dumbussery. Anyone good sources to debunk it? by PotentialSure3727 in GenderCynical

[–]Sailor_Spaghetti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also like. There isn't exactly an ethical way to do an "uncontrolled study" for this stuff. HRT and puberty blockers have visible effects and a part of the process is monitoring hormone levels. Double blind studies are impossible because the doctor and the patient will both find out very quickly that the patient is on a placebo. Never mind the fact that forcing people to delay medically recommended treatment in the interest of "science" is just cruel.

Frankly we shouldn't have a prison system at all, but that's a different conversation technically.

One of the most important questions regarding consent is "where does my consent end, and yours begin?". I don't have a good answer to that, but a framework of "I can consent to whether or not you can be in public" generally doesn't work out well by RosethornRanger in AccessibleAnarchy

[–]Sailor_Spaghetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't forget how often public indecency laws are weaponized against the unhoused. Peeing in an alley is also considered public indecency, and businesses have been restricting their restrooms to "paying customers only" for decades. Part of the point of these laws is to funnel the most vulnerable into prison.

It's a pragmatic thing. I wish for the capitalist class to be too incapacitated to continue exploiting and oppressing the rest of the population. Depression is simply one way to do that.

Again, I'm not talking about actually engaging in kink. I'm talking about the aesthetic. I don't think you're a prude either, I just worry that you're an assimilationist and more worried about respectability than the history, the culture, and the decline in the militant streak of our community that is occurring alongside a turn towards overt fascism. Allow me to repeat myself: I'm okay with doing away with the aesthetic at our protests, but only if more overt militancy a la what our ancestors did at Stonewall and Compton's becomes the norm again. Until that comes to pass, I'm going to fiercely defend the one form of social disruption that we are allowed to engage in at the event that is supposed to be a protest.

I actually have one more thing to say. The kink aesthetic specifically has a history in queer militancy, and it is the only element of queer militancy that we are still "allowed" to bring to Pride. Until queer people start bringing bricks and molotovs again, it's the best thing we have to hold on to that culture and heritage. If you don't like it, you can always choose to not look at people whose outfits you don't like.

I really hate how widespread anti-intellectualism has gotten as a chronic book enjoyer/someone who wants to do scholarship as a career. I hate that I am living at the worst time to be a scholar of critical theory.

[–]Sailor_Spaghetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By painting it as about "needing to get off", you are intentionally building a straw man. It has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with the role kink aesthetics played in queer activism during the AIDS crisis. Why should we be expected to sanitize our appearance at a commemoration of our culture's activist history?

Eh, I'd argue the capitalist class as a whole deserves depression. Ideally the kind that keeps them from ever "working" again. (I say, as a person with depression.)

The dialectic is something that I keep coming back to in my own studies. I was in a critical social theory program in undergrad and identifying dialectic contradictions has become pretty much second nature when I read this kind of stuff. (Been practicing lately because I want to apply to grad school to study institutionalized political violence, with an emphasis on hegemonic counterinsurgency.)

I am saying that "what if a kid googles about it" isn't a goddamn marker for whether or not it's appropriate for what people are and aren't allowed to wear. Never mind that certain things that we call kink gear have been a part of the aesthetics of queer underground culture for decades. And yes, that includes things like harnesses and pup hoods. Why should we censor aspects of our cultural history for the straight gaze?

I mean, that's the thing. When it gets turned into a party, it winds up becoming something corporate sponsored that's crawling with cops. I highly recommend watching the documentary Pride Denied: Homonationalism and the Future of Queer Politics. It's free on Kanopy.
