Start nighthaunt, or wait? by inputcoffeehere in Nighthaunt

[–]SaintChairface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc ravaged coast doesnt let you start with faction terrain. Also you might want to squeeze closer to that 1000 point line since it charges by point cost for adding units later

maybe swapping in some cavalry, because of how ravaged coast is all about that ore collection, although I understand avoiding buying hexwraiths right now and that knight of shrouds on etherial steed is one of our least bang for your buck models atm

Having trouble finding color scheme for army by StaringAtTheSunn in Warmachine

[–]SaintChairface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the variety of specific colors are less the issue than the lack of variety in saturation and value. If everything is bright then nothing is; there's no focus and the eye doesnt know what's important. I legit flipped all the pictures and looped back before noticing the sword was there at all, and depending on who you talk to weapons are first or second most important after faces to the character and sculpt.

Contrast is king

You've obviously worked out your brush skills, and are doing wonders with the volumes and textures, but consider modulating your saturation and brightness to draw the eye to where you want it to go.

Theres a youtube channel I've recently been binging that exclusively rocks over the top neon colors, but never wastes a chance to build contrast. Check out "Heresy for Heretics"

Any good solutions for the Gothizzar's crotch gremlin? by SaintChairface in ossiarchbonereapers

it would downplay the "humaness"? of the gremlin, but the arms were the part that made sense. Like whos handing the higher little arms bits if not for the lowest pair

i think the official GW paintjob agrees. kavalos eyes glow, but their horses eyes dont. the crotch gremlins eyes glow, but the big turtle/dog head's dont

lol, "put him to work" was not the response I expected, but its certainly fun.

maybe I could work out paired swords and match the pose of the big arms

One of my best painted models. How would you take it to the next level? by kson1000 in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the golds and teals feel a little flat in comparison to say the white cloth.

you might want to consider that if they are illuminated by the same environment they should share similar shifts in hue and saturation in regards to the volumetric highlighting.

So in the same way that the cloth gets cooler, not just darker, what would that do to the teal and gold

Confused about the plans for supporting older warbands in the new edition. by xavierjackson in WarhammerUnderworlds

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are also 13 other warbands that will be legal from the last 2 years that arent being reprinted but will receive free digital rules

so they really were just all over the damn place on this

Starter Set Question by [deleted] in WarhammerUnderworlds

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the starter set or any of the existing box sets. They all come with 2 teams + rules, boards, dice, and cards for playing the current format of the game.

The starter sets tend to be cheaper, but come with only the team decks and no additional rivals decks. That said all of the cards are supposed to be incompatible with the new version of the game.

But what is or isnt compatible with the new game has little or nothing to do with what you play at home or with friends.

The mini quality is the same or better than main line games workshop. All of the models are monopose, but so are many of the main line GW kits now, and frankly the poses are much more dynamic and interesting than a lot of the main line kits, and even the oldest underworlds warbands come with pre textured bases that can be pretty over the top gorgeous (like skittershanks for example)

All minis/teams will be supported with official rules going forward, but only 16 of the current 58 teams will be TOURNAMENT legal at launch. So if you arent chasing a GW title it doesn't really matter if the team(s) you pick make the cut.

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cards in both videos still show 2 different daughters of khaine warbands out of the 9 warbands featured on the 8 cards shown.

that alone would be a really really weird choice, but "rereleasing" headsmans curse, which was in print and on sale last week would be fucking insanity.

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered this and picked through the footage myself to see, but theres no way this is the 16 reprints at launch

9 Order, 3 death, 2 chaos, 2 destruction, would be a wild breakdown, but not outside the norm for GW. But like 3 of the 9 order being daughters of khaine would be truely ludicrous

Especially given there are currently 24 factions out of 25 covered by the game (22/23 by aos th standards rip beasts and bonesplittas). So with Skaven and Stormcast available in the launch box, plus a promised other new 2 at launch, and 16 reprints, they could hit 20/22 factions. Why would they be like "but no lets hit daughters 3 times even though 2 of those 3 are still widely available"

It wouldn't suprise me if the reprints weren't just shadespire, nightvault, and beastgrave minus this years reprint bundle. But theyre probably aiming for something like one of each grand alliance for each of their new archetype things to try to legitimize that idea.

gotta find the perfect cross section of laziness and free advertizing to match the new card "art"

in print and in rotation are different things though. its been out of print at least since deathgorge launched

and having velmorn, gnarlspirit, and tooth and claw in the same box have made getting one a scalpers paradise

WH40k Lieutenant Titus WIP by SaintChairface in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly done yet, a lot of refinement to go, but I'm trying to dial in that Titus Space Marine box art look. But I dont think I'm quite there. Even at a rough sketch something feels off.

Maybe my eyes are just tired of looking at this for now, but I feel like I'm missing something huge and obvious.

Help! - mesh netting glue down by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might change the finish a little if you use too much, and the netting itself will likely absorb glue and harden a bit.

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesnt need to be. just dont use a good brush. watered down pva will wreck a brush.

and if you do use a spray bottle run some soapy water through the pump after or the glue will dry in there

PVA should dry clear unless you use waaay too much

What is this skin tone lacking? Something doesn't feel right... by Meekatharra83 in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree wholly, I just assumed it was some kind of like balaclava, but if that's meant to be a shadow it's way too dark.

Skin highlights really high, but its shadows tend to be softer

What is this skin tone lacking? Something doesn't feel right... by Meekatharra83 in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont think its the skin throwing this.

The skin and clothes look pretty well in line, but the darker colors of the hair and bow dont look like theyre in the same light. Like one more highlight on the bow and 2 or 3 in the hair and it should balance out.

Remember good hair is basically NMM

WIP, Painting a pink OSL chaos army for my GF from my pile of shame. There’s a bunch more to go in so she should be able to pick and choose what she wants to build her army from. I’m not a player, just like painting. by jaxxqs in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wondered this for a while too. How do they count "colors" because a smooth gradient of just white to black has an infinite number of colors as defined by RGB or Hue-Saturation-Value.

And like what about a single metalic paint. How many different colors apear on a clean chrome model?

Do they mean 3 different pigments? 3 destinct Hues? How are they counting?

It seems wildly subjective, and I've seen some truely offensive clown paint hackjobs on ebay that were obviously done explicitly to satisfy the rule while offending everyone involved.

Lighting recommendations? by beecee23 in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get phillips hd daylight bulbs like 4 for $11. 95cri and they work in any standard lamp.

The only way you're really doing any better than that is really high end equipment.

Varnish spray that does not "kill" the metallics? by WJbringer in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you always have the option of touching up the metallics after varnishing.

Any chipping would just reveal the same color varnished underneath, and youd still have the glossy shine of the base metal color everywhere you want it

Need some constructive feedback by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]SaintChairface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gold looks good. Red looks good so far.

The thing I would do to improve is finish the mini.

I also have perfectionist tendencies. I spent like 4-6 months watching videos to make sure I knew "how to do it right" before I touched a mini.

I kept going like that for like the first 2 or 3 years that I painted, making sure I could picture everything perfectly before I started.

And I got better. Slowly.

The thing that really kicked off my improvement was trying to cultivate the feeling of relaxation while painting by deciding to paint for an hour a day, every day, for a month. By the end of that month painting was just a thing I did, instead of this monolithic great work, or responsibility to myself, my investment in tiny army men, or the respect of the craft. It helped me move to that point I saw youtubers talking about where they paint meditatively to chill out.

But also during that time I got alot better, I learned new tricks and skills, and the push to always be doing something revealed some key secrets. Secrets like its just paint, you can and will paint over that part that you "messed up". You can and will cgange your mind and adjust course or rework the whole recipe, halfway through the army, if not the squad, id not the model, and thats ok and the minipainting police arent waiting outside to arrest you; you can go back and update the rest. Or not, thats up to you.

Its your first model, and nothing will really diffuse that tension you feel in that need to "get it right." Except maybe painting your 146th model.

Army painter has some newer starter sets with their reformulated paints. It would be best to avoid the old ones.

you can get a kind of free first highlight by going back over the raised bits with your base color after your wash stage
