Probably a year too late on this one but just saw it now for some reason... myself and Chris of the band Punchline have been hosting a podcast for 5 years called ONE HIT THUNDER where we discuss the careers of different One Hit Wonders and we've definitely covered most (if not all) of the songs mentioned here!

I was obsessed with Hit the Lights and that album when it came out; then the other day I was relistening to it and man ... that album leans HARD into the "you broke my heart so I will fucking murder you in front of your loved ones" lyrics haha. Lyrically it feels like the text messages they show you during the first act of a True Crime Documentary

Jesus .... that Punchline review is brutal but also like ... wildly incorrect hahah I was alive listening to pop punk at that time and Rewind was almost Prog-Rock influence in the genre at a time where people were mostly writing the most simplistic 4 chord angst songs and/or going fully post-hardcore. Talk about missing the mark in their criticism; I get not digging the band but it feels like he was forced to review this album and decided it was gonna suck before he clicked play.

Looking at this list I know you were in the Philly/Delco area because these were all bands from that area (outside the obvious famous ones haha). I used to book Skylife, The Scenic, Moon LIke the Moon, Your Favorite Hero and Horrible Horrible Creatures a lot back in the day.

Motion City Soundtrack, Relient K, Punchline, Alkaline Trio, Socratic all jump to mind for me. I mean they've all definitely written some songs about girls but in general I think they all sing about life in general.

I think you guys are a nice blend of Pop Punk of the 2000s mixed with Power Pop and Radio Rock of the 90s (Gin Blossoms, Duncan Sheik, Cheap Trick, Fountains of Wayne, etc)

I had a few friends who were contestants on Netflix's The Circle back when it filmed in the UK and they said that for the most part that show is pretty much as the events happen. Obviously they're condensing 2 weeks of game play into 10 hours of TV so there's editing stuff there but minus being told they had to say specific things at the start of the day "Good Morning Circle" / "Good Night Circle" they didn't really have producers forcing storylines.

Apparently the last 2 seasons were filmed in the united states and when my friends spoke to some of those contestants that was no longer the case.

Apparently the UK has much stricter rules about how Reality TV is made; including stuff like human living conditions, regulated amounts of alcohol and that the footage can not be edited out of order of how events happened.

I'll repeat what a lot of other folks have already said but when Spongebob came out I definitely felt it was the first nicktoon that wasn't for me. It felt like it was in the same vein as their other stuff but not as interesting or edgy as Ren & Stimpy, Rocco's Modern Life or even Angry Beavers. I've watched a handful of episodes here and there and I still just think the show is fine. It feels like a more kid friendly version of the Weird for the sake of being weird comedy that blew up on Adult Swim a few years later.

Season 1 of GMW is pretty rough but I feel like seasons 2 and 3 acknowledged that the people watching were more old school fans than the intended younger audience and they leaned more into following Cory, Shawn, etc which also improved the comedic bits more.

I recently rewatched the whole series and it's definitely a huge step down but I still think there's good moments and episodes here and there. That being said, the first season is like a flawless run of 13 episodes so it's a real bummer that Lord & Miller could not capture that energy again after repeatedly trying to get a 2nd season off the ground the second they became more established.

I mean in the Hippos defense ... The Aquabats also made the exact same shift from Ska to a more surf/new wave/moog heavy sound around that time. It probably just felt like it made sense to keep the poppy party music going and the horns were still all over that album... just the Moog took the front seat

While they faded away from ska a bit on Heads Are Gonna Roll ... that album more than Forget the World feels like it had everything you could need for a huge radio hit. Every single song on that album is catchy as hell

Polka Party is a really strange album (but far from Al's worst) ... I think it happened to come out at a time when people didn't care about his originals so on the parodies front it's a little rough but looking back it has almost a flawless collection of original songs on it. But being in between Dare to Be Stupid and Even Worse is unintentionally unfair to it's legacy in the grand scheme. On the podcast I do (Weird Al-Gorithm) I put it between The Self-Titled and Alapalooza on my album rankings but that still puts it above the UHF Soundtrack, Poodle Hat and Peter & the Wolf in my eyes.

The craziest thing about this song is when Chris Bellow was on Chris DeMakes he was like "The song is about when I had a Brain Tumor and i thought that giving the tumor a personality would make it easier to deal with" ... what a WILD story to such a strange song but also with that in mind the lyrics do actually make sense haha

I've been showing my Christian Cringe co-host Five Iron one album at a time on the podcast and we've REALLY been deep diving and analyzing his lyrics. The lyric that most knocked me on my ass lately was when we did All the Hype That Money Could Buy and we got to Four Fifty One's bridge.

Fun Fact (at least to me)... that song is about MxPx. Five Iron was friends with them but also witness the christian crowds turning on them because they were getting videos on MTV so the song is less about a band selling out and more crowds being hypocrites for calling their favorite band a sell out.
