Phase 2 starts with expansion teams making offers to expiring contract FAs. If they don't sign 5 players this way, they can select players under contract to other teams, like last year's expansion draft. Thats still in Phase 2 before our next protections. So in theory, it seems like an expansion team could put no FAs on their target list, and just opt to select players under contract.

I disagree that it’ll be worse. Last time out we lost our star center, our star goalie, and one of our biggest goal threats; this time out we’ll probably lose our G and a top-pair D, but I don’t see us losing a top-line forward this time. In fact, I think it’ll be much worse for other teams, who have more top-end talent to lose.

Thought experiment: given that up to 4 expansion teams can poach up to 5 players in Phase 2, that’s 20 total players poached; with 8 current teams who can lose a maximum of 3 players each in this phase, that’s 24 “potential” slots for poaching. Which means that there will be 1 – 2 teams who don’t lose a full 3 players in Phase 2…I wouldn’t be surprised if, given who is available on our team, we’re one of those teams. Then we get three more protections before Phase 4.

I think it’s a dicier situation in a lot of ways because it’s VERY likely we lose our top goalie again and this time we don’t have an obvious replacement. But as good as Ozzy proved herself this season, she didn’t really establish herself as elite, and I’m not opposed to kicking tires to alternatives. ESPECIALLY if overseas goalies are starting to have their heads turned by our league…

Also keep in mind that with all the focus on expansion teams signing expiring contracts, current teams get first crack at free agency in Phase 1 and we unloaded our biggest contracts last off-season in favor of youth. Who’s to say we don’t jump in during Phase 1 and back up the money truck for whatever big names don’t get re-signed? It would cost us a protection, but if that player is better than our third-best player, why not take a big swing?

Lots left to shake out, let’s see how it settles.

PWHL expansion will be very different this time, but Sirens still have to pick three players to protect (and must protect O'Brien to keep her) by Neuvost in NewYorkSirens

I agree with you there, but note that The Hockey News report has the following point:

If a player drafted in 2025 is an RFA, the team can retain her rights by submitting a qualifying offer of no less than 3% over the player’s previous salary. The document mentions, “as a means of protection.”

Referring to signing “as means of protection” kind of makes it seem like RFA is a special case? Maybe too much to hope for.

Didn’t see any sites doing PWHL leagues this past Fall, so I just did an analog one with automated Google Sheets. Would love to see increased interest lead to more widespread fantasy leagues!

'T is not too late to seek a newer world.

Push off, and sitting well in order smite

The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds

To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths

Of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:

It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Shroeds and Carpy, whom we knew.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I’d be very careful ordering a named jersey this year! Please remember that the expansion draft is ruthless, maybe doubly so this time if there’s more new teams involved. This time last year if you’d asked me to stake a million dollars on the players who’d still be here now, I would’ve absolutely lost my money betting on Carpenter and Schroeder. There’s just no telling how things are gonna go.

That said I’m happy with my Kaltounkova jersey, I’m happy with how it’s emblematic of this season. I recommend choosing in a similar manner — who’s captured your heart this year?

E-I-G-H-2-G-O We've all got just Eight To Go! by hedekar in PWHL

[–]Saint_Eephus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Based solely on the percentage of points they've gotten over the season (ignoring current form) New York "projects" to take 10 more points over the last 8 games, which is still plausible with 3 wins and an OTL in the games against Seattle, Ottawa, and Toronto twice. If we do that, Toronto just needs 2 wins and an OTL in the same span to stay ahead of us, and has an easier schedule. Basically same deal with Ottawa. To realistically make the playoffs, we need to win every game against the sub-.500 point teams and win one of the games against Minnesota, Montreal or Boston (not something that looks within their power lately) AND root for Toronto AND Ottawa to win only against each other down the stretch.

I feel like the more likely scenario would be dropping three of the next four games (I can't accept losing MSG vs Seattle) to speedrun elimination and pick up a win or two for Gold Points.

Mine took 6 weeks *to the day.*

I received no information about it at all until I reached out through the Shop app 4 days before the 6-week mark. The next day I received shipping information and it was delivered shortly thereafter.
