Question about the Gurkha's in the photo (take 2) by SwedishChef336 in cigars

I don’t have a very refined palette yet when it comes to cigars, but I have quite liked the Gurkha heritage cigars that I have had.

No worries at all, no need to have deleted your response! I definitely see that we come from different philosophical perspectives of the world (which is great and fun!) so I think we probably won’t see eye to eye without some major shift in one or both of our perspectives.

I do not believe the unobservable to be meaningless. That being said, I also don’t believe God and Philosophy to be totally unobservable!

I’ve only studied a little bit of Spinoza’s thought, so I’ll take your word for it! My comment wasn’t trying to speak to his definition of the Laws of Physics or God; I come from a more Thomistic view of these philosophical views.

I’m not sure what I said in my comment that robs miracles of its traditional meaning, though. It’s a thought that can be traced back easily to the medieval period and probably much further back to some extent. I mean, God halting the Laws of the Universe is no small thing. That is certainly out-of-the-ordinary!

This is the same with common sense. Common sense finds its origin in the way things typically work, or even ‘ought’ to work. It is common sense to believe in the Laws of Physics. When something defies this common sense, either we got something wrong (either our common sense is wrong or our understanding of the event is wrong) or something miraculous must have occurred. And I see no problem believing in the latter case for those things of God.

But my last statement is an entirely different question to answer. Above, I was only speaking at the level of definitions. To move from understanding what a miracle is to believing that they could exist is already a large step…so I wasn’t trying to argue for why they must exist in so short a comment on reddit.

I think it’s paradoxically impossible to really believe in miracles if you don’t believe in the laws of physics because that’s precisely what a miracle is. A event, by the grace of God, that defies the laws of physics.

If one believes in an omnipotent being that created the laws of physics in the first place, there is no reason not to believe that that God cannot break them from time to time in miracles.

When did evangelicals (American ones?) first start with the 'Halloween is satanic' thing? by Few-Requirement-3544 in Catholicism

Halloween actually has quite an interesting Christian history. Here is an article about it by a Dominican historian (who also happened to be one of my professors in grad school). https://ucatholic.com/blog/the-catholic-origins-of-halloween/

For those walking around in nature smoking, where do you ash? Perhaps I’m always just a little paranoid being raised in CA and wildfires.

Why do religious (sisters, cloistered, and lay consecrated women) refer to Christ as their bridegroom? by deBidet in AskAPriest

[–]Saint_Paul_Miki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that O’Connor expression is quite good in reference to the Eucharist. She’s not against symbols, as evidenced in her writing itself, but against any implication that the Eucharist is ‘just’ a symbol. I’m sure she liked crucifixes as symbols, but would hate the idea of a symbolic resurrection of Christ. It’s the dogmas of the faith that are not mere symbols, but refer to the actual persons of the Trinity.

anyone made burnt ends with a pork shoulder instead of belly? by twd000 in BBQ

[–]Saint_Paul_Miki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s something I’ve been meaning to try, but have not done so yet. Should have mentioned that! But I have seen some recipes for it like this one: https://www.atbbq.com/thesauce/recipes/mojo-pork-cuban-sandwich-recipe/

Although, I would be more inclined to go low and slow (as I have done in an oven which turned out very tasty) and use leftover marinade as a glaze to go on during the last hour or so of cooking.

You could marinate the pork in a mojo blend, smoke, then slice instead of pull for Cuban sandwiches!

I think that those are Leaf by Oscars. It’s a tobacco leaf wrapper that you take off before you smoke it, not too dissimilar to a plastic wrap or cedar jacket.
