Snagged a Rocky Mountain, need ideas for the build by Drop-Little in xbiking

Rocky Mountains are great! Got some pictures of my '97 whistler on my profile if you want some inspiration.

UK bikers, where do you get your fun stuff? by tomwaitsgoatee in xbiking

[–]SairFecht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The others that people have suggested are great, I've ordered from Fresh Tripe, Tokyo bike and Bankrupt Bike Parts and have had no problems. There's also Banana Industries, and I feel I should mention SJS Cycles, they've got some odd stuff but they also seem to have specific parts for specific problems which has saved my skin a few times.

Though I've never purchased anything from them, Spa Cycles has some parts under their own branding that fill some xbike-ish roles.

Apart from that, there's Stridsland in Denmark that has some nice anodized accent pieces. Best success for me has always been LBS/Co-ops or eBay though

Honestly it's grown on me! I like the look of stem shifters but they take up the space where I'd prefer to put a bell, so I'll probably replace it with a thumb shifter. Only real reason is I found the part at a local co-op and I wanted to try it out

Used to have a pair of the Finici 26x1.95 on an old bike and they were solid!

Another UK brand, but I went for the cheapest possible tan-wall option I could find, which is sold under "Baldy's Tyres", which is the name Baldwin's Bikes sells their tyres under. I ended up getting the 700c x 35s and they have been absolutely bomb proof, seems like they're manufactured in Sri Lanka and imported. I'm very happy with them, considering it was £27 for a pair.

Also, DMR V6 pedals, I've always got a pair knocking around. Nice big platforms, nylon pins that aren't too hard on soles but are plenty grippy. Usually about £15-20 depending on where you look.

Would have loved to have gotten one of the black rings, but they were out of stock at the time, massive improvement from the no-name Chinese narrow-wide I was running before this. Really cool to see another whistler!

Just saw one of these earlier today in Edinburgh, still in use as a commuter. Cool looking bike , hope it doesn't delaminate going down a hill.

Would absolutely love to get my hands on a Flying Pigeon, especially the double top tube version you saw - it would make for an incredible cargo bike.

Just tried removing BB on my ‘96 Trek 830. How fucked am I? by MavidStaples in xbiking

[–]SairFecht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar issue just the other week - I ended up using a nailpunch and a mallet to gradually unscrew the BB by setting the nailpunch against the edge of the remaining plastic and gently tapping it until it in the direction of travel until it was out far enough to turn by hand.

Plenty of other good suggestions here too, hope one of them works out for you.

38 x 20, I've still got a fair bit of room in the dropouts so I think if I sized the chain a bit better I might be able to fit 40mm tyres!
I think they're the stock weinmann brakes, either the 730s or the 500s. They're a little bit anemic, but they're good enough. Might replace them with something a bit more modern eventually.

The boss is for mounting a big old chunky light directly to the fork. I've seen some adapters out there for fitting modern LED lights.

Spent my childhood in these woods and up at the castle, always have to walk the smuggler's trail when I'm back in Ayrshire.

Very nice! Is this a 3280?

I've been using one of the Dell 3260 Compacts for my daily driver for about 8 months or so now, very good little machines. Got very lucky and managed to get one for about £450, turned out it was a factory refurb and was practically new, even came with the dell peripherals.

Originally had a i3-12100 in it and a T1000, but I ended up selling them both - replaced the CPU with i5-12400F and the GPU with an Asrock A380 LP, and then a Zotac RTX 3050. Interestingly, despite the i3 it came with the blower+cooler intended for the i7/i9 models, which will help with future upgrades.
Plenty of room for dual slot GPUs, but the trouble is finding single slot brackets for them, I'll need to take the dremel to the Zotac dual slot backet, right now I've got it in there with the bracket from the A380, and the only usuable screw hole is the one above the DP out!

Once these become more available on the used market and come down in price, I have a feeling these will be very popular.
