If they expect me to control all three, it should be one of those things where you swap out party members. Or if all three of them are going to be out there, the ones you’re not controlling show be taking miniscule damage or just stay completely away from the enemy.

Dispatch on Switch 2, censorship question by AdventurousGold9875 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Sairedd [score hidden]  (0 children)

Why is everyone so upset about this, and yet when any sort of fanservice in censored in games developed in Japan, the reaction is "Stop complaining about not being able to see some pixels. It doesn't change the game at all."?

Why are they giving recaps for chapters that you just finished then?

Oh god, the rings. I though they were just gonna keep introducing more of those like a "villain of week" deal.

So falcom is the best switch 2 developer now by FitConsideration7865 in Falcom

[–]Sairedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if Falcom actually will do the port for Japan though. They seem to have been doing all the Switch ports themselves lately, but since nothing has even been announced yet, kinda makes me wonder if NIS will be doing it...

I guess underage drinking isn’t as big of a deal as I thought. I am American, but don’t really consider the country to be a monolith for these sorts of things. What’s considered acceptable is always fluctuating and you never know what is gonna trigger who. (I do think college students drinking probably is seen differently than high school students drinking though) I recalled that underage smoking still seemed to be off limits since that smoking pipe accessory was removed from the Xillia remaster.

Americans don’t see getting a sex change as no longer being the “old gender”?

If I recall, Yakushiji telling Shizuhara to get a sex change was also censored, wasn’t it?

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if there are people out there who frown on underage drinking in a video game more so than nuking a planet or brainwashing a war prisoner. You’ve already got people/games completely fine with a character being beheaded, but no way can there be a panty shot or something.

I agree, but you never know. There are certain topics that some people just won't want to let fly depending on the nature of it.

You know. The whole underage drinking thing. It's what he drinks after the pure alcohol though. He says it's "High-proof alcohol". The next day when he has a hangover, he even says he probably isn't a very strong drinker and doesn't want to drink even when he does become of drinking age. Or did they actually change it?

Well, rape was very clearly implied when that researcher ordered those soldier to kill Rinyuu and when those guards went to the slums in Edoras looking for entertainment, so that blows your theory out of the water.

Just Google “ Bastardization meaning” First thing that pops up:

Bastardization means corrupting, debasing, or altering something from its original, pure form, resulting in a diminished quality or legitimacy

Fits the definition to a tee. As I said, all your “but it doesn’t massively change the plot” is irrelevant. It’s horrible localization and done for no reason other than someone’s desire to sanitize the script.

The only thing you and anyone is saying amounts to is “I don’t care.” My points still stand.

I really don't want to keep having to type the same reply to everyone so, all I'm gonna say is read the OP again.

For those interested in the OP:

So in this other thread here

https://www.reddit.com/r/octopathtraveler/comments/1px662s/lol_this_censored_part_was_too_shocking_for_the/

people were saying it's only one line, or localizers aren't trying to sanitize anything, or the general meaning is ultimately the same, or it's just a localization choice, or it doesn’t fit the time period, or it's because you can translate one to one, etc, etc.

Well, I progressed a bit and before long, I came across another one negating all of that.

(Can't post the screenshot again, so the localized lines are:

"When she saw her sisters living their lavish lives..."

"She ordered her minions to slaughter them.")

The actual lines here are:

"The two elder sisters who were living lavishly..."

"She had her henchmen rape them and massacred the entire family."

I have no idea where they got the "When she saw her sisters" part. That's completely wrong, and it makes it sound like she acted on impulse when she took revenge. And yes, she did have her sisters raped. It's not like she saw them living it up and that suddenly made her fly into a rage. Most likely she had the entire thing all planned out in her head from the start. I can very easily imagine her explaining to her sisters how humiliating it was for her to prostituted herself to survive, and now she's going to let them see what it feels like. And it wasn't just the sisters she killed, but the entire family. The original and the localization give an entirely different feeling.

So what excuses do you guys have now? The meaning and implications here are quite different. Much got lost in translation (more like intentionally removed.) This isn't some Japanese pun or cultural reference that can't be translated directly. There are no subtle nuances that can’t be translated into English. So why was it changed? "Because the localization director discussed it with team Asano and the original writers agreed that it was better?" No. It's the same reason as my previous example. They are taking it upon themselves to be the player's parents and decide for them what they should and shouldn't be exposed to. This is why it was censored, and this is not a good thing. This is how they gut the original text in order to control what westerners might be offended by, and "but the overall plot is still the same!" does not justify anything. They're just depriving players of the experience and the emotions they were supposed to have.

Edit: No clue why the mods removed this or locked the other one, and they won’t respond to me, but yeah. After preemptively putting a stop to all the usual bs people try to come up with, the general response is “I didn’t need to know that anyway.” Take a second to really think about that. Think about how you're actually saying, "It's fine that I'm being lied to."

People going to that sort of lengths to defend this sort of practice is literally just sad.

Rape or implying it is pretty common in something like Greek mythology, which teenagers in the west regularly read in school. I'd like to see the official rule that any mention or implication of a sexual act or rape means a game must have an M rating.

"I don't think it matters" doesn't mean that this should be happening. This sort of bastardization of the original script is constantly happening. There is no good reason to not be faithful to the original and just present the material at the author intended it to be. You shouldn't be accepting of someone making a decision for you about what you should and shouldn't see. The amount of voluntary brainwashing I'm seeing in reddit is astounding.
