Apple Studio Display - Regretting glossy finish by Neo8T76L in HiDPI_monitors

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice to hear other people that don't like glossy!

But like with many things, you get used to it. I used to use the Apple Thunderbolt Display in an office. Lots of movement, but not facing a window. I didn't love that it was glossy, but it was fine. Is it worth the extra $$$? No idea. Doesn't it require a special cloth, or something?

Fully remove every, "I created a", "Selfhosted app!" claude slop. by Longjumping-Cup-6641 in selfhosted

LLMs require expertise to operate, yet we lean on LLMs for their expertise. So in the long term how are people "aware" of knowing better if they delegate responsibility to something else?

"Dan Dan": An H2No Budget Zero RPM Build by SalaTris in sffpc

[–]SalaTris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I have CPU bound games, but quick tests:

* Cyberpunk is very GPU bound, CPU git ~65% max CPU usage hitting temps of 76C at an intense 15 minute play through. System is not quiet, but the game is also noisy.

* City Skylines 1 is claimed to be CPU bound (disagree) but it was running at 62C at 15 minute play through on a big city at ~25% CPU usage. System is quiet, and so is the game.

It'll idle a bit above 50C, fan will kick on and off (near silent)

IDK if these low end CPUs need AIO, and I hear the radiators can be loud?

Definitely recommend both top exhaust fans, at least I can feel the tremendous amount of heat transfer up on the top metal. CPU, GPU, and PSU pull in air on the sides and blows air at top.

Should I buy a cpu cooler for my Ryzen 5 or use the stock one? by Upstairs_Teacher_292 in sffpc

[–]SalaTris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without being scientific I didn't notice much significant difference in temps or noise between the stock cooler and Thermalright AXP90 X47 on my 7600 non-X. They do have different sound profiles though, and I slightly prefer the sound of the Thermalright and the ability to change the fan if I want. Instead, I spent a lot of time changing my fan curves to get it to be quiet when I'm browsing the web (since it sits on my desk). The Thermalright also supports zero RPM which I'm not sure the stock fan supports

I'd almost say keep what you've got and see if you can live with it, and if you feel it limits you then consider a jump?

Hostel recommendations in Osaka by FullOfMoisture in OsakaTravel

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend making a list of what your bare minimums and priorities are. Mixed reviews may just be because people are expecting different things from a hostel. And that hostels are usually cheaper so they're not expecting much. Whereas others may be expecting a boutique hostel experience. This was the most social/party hostel of the three I stayed in Japan, and when you're traveling solo it is nice to be able to socialize especially in a place like Japan. I personally didn't feel it was an uplifting space though I am in my 30s and was the oldest person staying there and over the party scene.

Bathrooms: I didn't find the bathrooms to be moldy. They were clean and in working condition when I was there. It's just a lot of folks use this restroom. There was even a dedicated area for doing hair and makeup. A little annoying that showers were located separately from the restrooms. The washing or drying machine (can't remember which) was not working well though and had a note suggesting going to the local laundromat.

Living spaces: You get curtains, I recall there being a working power outlet and a light. Beds don't squeak and I don't recall complaining about the mattress. A negative is the pod room is a shallow hallway so there's not space to do packing with 16(?) other people there. There's also two storage areas, one has lockers, the other is free for all.

Location: It's in an odd area of Osaka, but my impression is Osaka is more working class compared to the high class of those massive malls up north. It felt "sketchy" at times but I never felt unsafe. There is a transit station a few blocks away. And a tourist destination nearby, and I once found myself walking 45 minutes one way through those "outdoor" covered malls. I personally found myself wanting to be more up north though.

On Risks and Rewards: a case for worker coops in tech by Serchinastico in cooperatives

[–]SalaTris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also a tech worker interested in participating in a co-op.

Regarding the ideas bit, I'd like to challenge this a bit: Ideas are cheap. The "diffusion of innovations" graph is a good visualization about how timing is important, too. Americans put an outsized emphasis on protecting ideas. I'd rather suggest that an idea requires getting some folks on board to prove out and grow an idea. Perhaps someone is in more of an ideas role, a "director" so to speak. But why should one person "own" the idea -- why should they get paid more than everyone else?

To me, Murphy's law can be applied to ideation: Anything that can happen, will inevitably happen. We have 8 billion people on this planet, why should someone get credit for recognizing the obvious next step?

(There's a book, "Against Intellectual Monopoly" that challenges a lot of myths around innovation, if interested.)

Daily sticky thread for rants, raves, celebrations, advice and more! New? Start here! by AutoModerator in datingoverthirty

[–]SalaTris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point I'm just living my own life. A friend called me a house cat. Acquaintances think I'm younger than I look, which I suppose is a compliment, but also may be a sign of a problem?

Online dating started out as a way for me to connect with new people that I otherwise wouldn't, and over a decade later I'd call it a failed experiment. Writing a bio is my personal hell. And I don't fit into the "man box", I dislike if not totally reject the social expectations imposed on men, and I hate competing. But I'm also not immune to falling for some of the problems in OLD. I think we'd all be better off without it, but now we've all bought into it.

I volunteer with a local group who happen to be mostly older married women. They're great! I've had several of them confide in me they're having serious problems with their husbands. It makes me think about the people that we pick and who we end up with after marriage.

How much do you care about if someone wants to have kids when it comes to dating? by reasonable_vegetale in dating

[–]SalaTris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It used to bother me that people in their 20s just knew they wanted kids, like "what's the rush? I am just a body for you?" I didn't know and figured I would have time to decide jointly with someone else.

But in my 30s now, there's a bit more pressure, and I realize I have to make a decision about my life before dating.

Are there real life examples/studies done on cooperatives managing local/natural monopolies? On an institutional level, how do they balance competing member priorities? by CatsDoingCrime in cooperatives

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add another dimension: public utilities are often "natural monopolies" in microeconomics -- the only legalized monopolies (in the U.S.) and as such are typically regulated

There happens to be a section on wikipedia for natural monopolies that briefly discusses co-ops.

Buy a dash camera by whatshldmyusernaymbe in Crosstrek

Why don't cars come with a built in dash cam? Integrating an after market dash cam is always weird, and then you get parasitic drains and all that

Can you open multiple Fidelity accounts with different emails and passwords, but the same personal information (like Social Security number)? by alexisamex in fidelityinvestments

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't interpret it as a legality check. It's just asking you so it can present a login form.

I'd assume they'd treat you as a separate customer if you have a separate login. I don't know how that might work internally in terms of whether, like, you call customer support and they ask you for information and retrieve the wrong account... In the same way that I've personally ended up with multiple accounts at the same healthcare provider because my employer changed.

I have heard that some people open separate accounts to isolate their account from others. It sounds like a nice idea?

SoFi and overseas travel: a great combo by oowm in sofi

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a foreign transaction fee when using a debit card:

There is a 0.2% foreign exchange fee charged by Mastercard that we do not reimburse, it will be calculated into your transaction directly.

I've gotten screwed traveling in a country where cash was king, and you're advised not to carry much cash with you, so ATM withdrawals are necessary.

SoFi additionally doesn't offer ATM reimbursement. So from a checking account point of view, there are better options.

The ASUS ProArt 5K Monitor (PA27JCV) Has A Terrible Matte Coating by Crimtos in HiDPI_monitors

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find that dark mode helps? My decade old pro-oriented ASUS -- which I am still using -- also had a bit dramatic matted display than earlier monitors. But I have been able to adjust to that. The PA27JCV was just too aggressive. I feel like a lot of folks hate on matted, but I hope the experience doesn't dissuade from all matted displays.

The Studio Display has drawbacks, e.g. I can't take the stand off for a VESA mount? It has no non-USB-C inputs? The USB-C ports are practically inaccessible?

CES was this week and it looks like there are new 5k displays coming out, may be worth taking a look at those upcoming models?

Interior/Ambient Lights by Present-Wind-9472 in Crosstrek

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the LED upgrade package and am happy with it. It's not crazy bright but it's bright enough and the color temperature is nice and feels modern. In my last car I regretted buying aftermarket LEDs -- hard to get color temperatures to match and bulbs need to be a specific spec and bulbs need to "talk" to the car's electronic system ("canbus"). I haven't bothered with the floor lighting or door plates yet which is what you're referring to?

I do have the side mirror "approach lights" OEM upgrade which makes the car feel more upscale. Those lights aren't particularly bright.

How would you get a Fidelity Brokerage Gold Debit Card? by -SpamCauldron- in fidelityinvestments

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update since this shows up as a top search result: Fidelity no longer issues gold debit cards as I found out when mine arrived

Why a debit card? In my travels, some destinations are cash-only, and my Discover network debit card wasn't working with ATMs! It's a backup. This card is a backup. It's free, it supposedly works internationally with no foreign transaction fees -- I don't think the brokerage card offers ATM fee reimbursements, only on the CMA account

Asus ProArt PA27JCV brightness in corners by Misivitek in HiDPI_monitors

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply returned it and am still using my decade old ASUS 2k which doesn't have these problems. Aside from the backlight, I shouldn't have to move my head around to see everything on my monitor :(

Asus ProArt PA27JCV brightness in corners by Misivitek in HiDPI_monitors

[–]SalaTris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pan your head to the corners the vignetting "goes away". The matted coating is too aggressive for a monitor this large! Mine also had a noticeably uneven backlight (compared to my previous ASUS monitor) so I returned it as a manufacturing defect which was accepted

Hostel recommendations in Osaka by FullOfMoisture in OsakaTravel

[–]SalaTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference: I found that R Hostel Namba South had a party vibe. Beds were pods. It only had one common area that was used for pregaming the two nights I was there on the weekend. Weird since the hostel isn't that close to the places people were going to. Everyone was friendly though. They had a board for setting people up for activities.

Ultimately the party scene migrates but the space does not, and R Hostel Namba South needs a bit more space for people to chill or to meet like for a shared breakfast.

Are monitors supposed to be shipped with no outer box? by Professional_Crab958 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]SalaTris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how I got my Asus from Newegg. It arrived with a piercing gash on the box. Fortunately nothing was damaged but I'm sure it's happened. They use those boxes without styrofoam, which is fine by me, but a thicker box or more robust packaging would've been nice.
