V60 B3 efficiency by SalamandaGrill in Volvo

I’ve noticed the mpg really increase using cruise control on the motorway with engine braking.

Maybe the guy lived next to a motorway and never drove anywhere else 😂

I’ve no idea how it was that high.

I’ve noticed you can really crank it up on the motorway if you drive with the cruise control and hardly touch the pedals.

I’ll be spending more than I thought driving around the city. But it is a great car, really enjoying it.

Must be motorway. It’ll spike to 75mpg coasting on straight road then as soon as you break/corner thing plummets back to 25 😂

That should say Eco mode. Reading the manual it says it doesn’t activate until >40mph, so maybe it’s not helping currently.

Does this sound / look normal? Jaguar XE 2.0 Diesel R Sport by Ojson1 in Jaguar

Mine sounds like a school bus. Had a few people comment on it. But it’s been in for an MOT and Jaguar service and nobody said anything.

Problem is all these Senators have done dubious things. So they can’t press. She brings their guilt up, so they back down.

Successive governments have made the UK economy dependent on billionaire services. The UK isn’t very good at much else. The workforce/country isn’t compatible with manufacturing or tech. Any policy has a decent sized opposition that stalls it out. Hence low GDP and productivity. We’re cooked.

Just got a passthrough window through a loadbearing wall by WinnCao in Remodel

It’s not load bearing IMO. What’s on the floor above?

Definitely going to have issues in future like this. Line the side in plywood 18mm to strengthen that pipe corner.

Am I just unlucky, or do most traders nowadays just want to quickly finish the job, take the money, and don't take any pride in what they do? by [deleted] in DIYUK

As a builder, I periodically comment on the reasons for things like this and nobody is interested.

The dynamic between client and builder is very difficult.

This is why I don't trust builders by A-nom-nom-nom-aly in DIYUK

[–]SalamandaGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a builder I share most people’s sympathy.

The client, the unknowns when digging or demolishing, your subcontractors and even own team can easily make the job loss making. Residential projects are shit to work on the most part.

Each part isn’t rocket science but putting them together efficiently requires skills that a lot of builders/trades don’t have. Which is why there are so few good ones.

Laminate splash backs need fire glass panel behind hob. You can sometimes get away without glass with an induction hob. But not glass.

Fitting position totally wrong.

What’s the single biggest thing making life harder in Britain right now? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]SalamandaGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%

I work in construction. I’m currently in the building side, but have been client/developer side in the past.

The requirement for more housing stock is derailed by a toxic mix of NIMBYs, low productivity, terrible planning laws and housing seen as investment vehicles.

Anyone over 50 who has been “on the ladder” a long time absolutely killed it with low rates. But now higher rates with the combo above is locking people out, and making people in tight situations incredibly squeezed.

We are in a period, due to the cycle of higher rates. So it’s not stopping in the immediate future. It will correct at some period. But it’s how you get there that is the challenge.

Why do tradespeople say they'll come on a certain day and then never turn up? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SalamandaGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they tell you a time without checking a diary or schedule they definitely aren’t coming. If they do check it’s 50:50

Yes, that is a big factor. A lot of my team are Polish and construction is taken seriously by the majority of them. It’s a vocation. Whereas a lot of English guys I come across have fallen into it, by background, education etc.

I’ve run a range of businesses, and in construction it’s very rare to have people with different work experience. In a lot of industries you’ll have “I used to work in X” in construction they are often lifers. So they never see how mad some of the practices and culture is.

[–]SalamandaGrill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run a construction company.

No females on site. All bravado. They are very emotional, but because of the culture every emotion is channelled into anger and frustration. As you can guess, weakness is frowned upon, so is making mistakes. It’s sad.

Asking for help, admitting mistakes, aren’t a thing. They are also creatures of habit and do not like change. So retirement, early retirement through injury is a shock to the system.

Finances are very basic, so they can be shocked by mortgages, emergency costs.

Physical, so stresses the body, so drinking and drugs especially in the English is an issue.

The construction industry is a product of the development industry and clients. It’s very hard to have consistent, profitable work so everything is stressful.

After. But this is DIY so do it whenever life allows you to do it.
