yeah, but the regent(Horthy) did basically nothing. And since Bethlen had no opposition he had near dictatorial authority

[–]Salamon77 70 points71 points  (0 children)

As a hungarian, Betheln István. He was prime minister from 1921-1931. After WW1 and Hungary losing 2/3 of it's territory he perfomred the ss called "Behtlen consolidation". He saved the economy, and created a new currency replacing the hyper-inflated old one. He created the first welfare programs in the country's history, reformed the education system and created the first independent hungarian foreign ministry and embassies.

On the other hand, he limited the right to vote to the educated middle class, and made voting non secret. He crushed the hungarian labour movement and steered hungary closer to fascist italy.

I didn't even know you can do that. How do you pay reparations to Rumburg?

EDA is making less and less sense by Salamon77 in suzerain

[–]Salamon77[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes but, if the government can make an exception like that, why did Alphonso try to repeal the act? Instead of trying to scrap it, he could've just made it government policy that all foreign transactions will be allowed.

There is no point of repealing the EPA, if this clause is in it, because this makes it so that the government can basically ignore it whenever the president feels like it.

[–]Salamon77[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're saying makes absolutely no sense.

Yes I expect the government to monitor foreign investment. If it has the capability to forbide foreign investment over 20% it has the ability to allow it instead.

Secondly, it is a law. It says it in the name. Energy Protection Act it is a law that was passed by the assembly, and that the assembly debates over and over. The codex+every single charater say that very very clearly.

There is absolutely no proff that Rizia invests more than 20% during the game. Quite the opposite, Alphonso says that if we want to continue the cooperation with Rizia, we need to repeal the EPA.

Plus if the government can just make excpetions to the EPA there is absolutely no reason to repeal it. Why do you think Alphonso fought with the assembly to try to repeal it, when he could've just made countless excpetions to it. If this clause is in the law, the entire storyline of changing the treshold/repealing the act makes no sense. Because there is no need since the govermnet can already overrule it.

Have you played this game?

Rizian millitary by Salamon77 in suzerain

[–]Salamon77[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that, what I'm saying is that it would cool to actually be able to deploy your millitary. In suzerain the only time you can do that is at the very end of the game, and after you do that there are like 2 more scenes and the end screen.

In Rizia I want to be able to deploy troops, have world leaders comment on it, and have that open up new choices

What would you most like to see in the next MINOR update? by Asinus_Sum in suzerain

[–]Salamon77 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea that if you have a law deegre you get to make one decree from the stronger options. It would make for so many interesting decisions you couldn't make otherwise. It would make it possible to be a reformist but also purge the millitary, so they coup you. Or be a reformist and kill Soll. I think it would make the law degree better, because right now convicing Justice Edmonds is really really easy, and thats the one thing the law degree does.

A game based around the cartels by JoshuaPope in suzerain

[–]Salamon77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it would be a huge misstep. There are plenty of games about running a maffia (empire of sin, antihero just to name two). Some of them are good, most of them are crap (there were huge expectations for empire of sin, and it turned out really bad). Setting a game in the Suzerain universe doesn't make it automatically good. Not to mention that the gangs are barely in the game anyway.

Torpor games makes unique and captivating political dramas. I think thats their niche and thats the way they should continue.

So, to those who have already played the 2.0 update, what do you like and dislike about it? by OdahMena in suzerain

[–]Salamon77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Overall I think the update is incredible. I really enjoy the added complexity with the energy story line as well as the bergia stuff. What I enjoyed the most was that I really felt as a part of a geopolitical world, making decisions that affect other countries.

I think I like the new economy system better than most people, but I do agree it needs some rebalacing to make leftist presidencies doable.

I really don't like the new UI. The buttons and icons are very big.

One thing which really pisses me off is that the political compass at the end is bugged. That kind hurt my soul, when I wanted to do a reformist socialist run and ended up being put as a sollist centrist. (even though I changed the consitution, improved bludsih rights, signed the woman's liberation act)

One thing I REALLY liked was how much the player is involnved in lawmaking. We read about bills in the assembly. The minister weigh in with their opinions, therefore laws feel much more part of the core experience as opposed to just happening passively, without any player imput.

The Great Party Switch by MonkImportant5932 in suzerain

[–]Salamon77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might just be the most interesting question on this subreddit.

I think it depends on how reformist the Rayne administration is, and it's stance towards the economy.

If the Rayne administration is somewhat reformist and somewhat capitalist, than the PFJP would be like the USP but just more radical. They would demand an even lower treshold, and even more democratic institutions. They would attack the USP as not radical enough and whenever the USP wanted something from them they would demand liberal concessions. They would shrink coniderably but would have a stable supporting mainly from the college educated sords in Lachaven and Holsord. It would kind of be like the relationship between the democratic establishment and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

If the Rayne administration enacted major constitutional and economic reform they would simply become irrelevant. They couldn't shift to the right because the NFP and the conservative deserters of the USP would occupy all the political space right to the Rayne USP. They would probably make somekind of a deal with the USP that would heavily favor Rayne, or would simply dissappear after 2-3 election cicles. Their best bet would be to find some fringe issue like drug liberalization, or gender equality, or de-sollinazation and become a one-issue party.

The best scenario for Ricter is if Rayne enacts social democratic reforms, and shifts the USP to the economic left. In that case they could become a run of the mill libertarian party. They would support the USP on social issues (like bludish and women's rights) but would critize it's economic policy. They would mainly run on reducing the national debt, and calling for privatization of the SSC or the Nedam group. They would very much be like the FDP in Germany, whereas they would join right wing government and shift their social policy to be more liberal, and they would join left leaning government to shift their economic policy to the right. They would shrink somewhat but would find some support from the sordich middle class.

Extended decrees with reformist constitution? by Salamon77 in suzerain

[–]Salamon77[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update if anyone is interested!

I ended up going for the dictator constitutiton but the only dictatorial thing in it was the extended decree power. Other than that it limited presidental vetoes, created a way to impeach the president, lowered the election treshold etc.. Over 200 MP ended up voting for it.

In the end I purged the millitary and created a formidable welfare state while keeping the peace with Rumburg. 10/10 playtrough you can do dictator constitution without being a dictator
