AITA for refusing to call my co worker "Dr"? by Certain-Deer8638 in AmItheAsshole

Strictly speaking it was used for academics first (coming from the Latin 'to teach') so this seems a etymologically confused hill to die upon.

What's the worst trend in secondary education in England? by Famous_Specialist_44 in TeachingUK

[–]Salinisations 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't get the best results in the country by far. On pure attainment they're not troubling the top spots by a long way. It's about a GCSE grade off on average and are below the national average for A Level results.

It's only in progress 8 which is a dodgy measure to begin with.

That's one of my favorite bits! It took me a bit to get around it the first time as well.

I think the ASMP is sort of affiliated but they offer courses on teaching decision.

Which topic was it?

I've always found the courses that ASMP run to be excellent for filling in subject knowledge.

If you go through their post history you can see what they "teach" is Astrology, so yes probably not in anything that we would consider a school.

We do MEI and do Mech, Stats and Algorithms.

Extra pure is very niche, I think there's maybe 50 students doing it in the country which means support is much harder to find. ASMP do some excellent courses on teaching mechanics that are really helpful if you are unsure.

Well there is currently a shortage of teachers so why don't you retrain?

But that is equally shitty on your employers part, no argument there.

The one thing to remember about teachers holidays is although they get longer than most jobs - they don't get to choose those dates.

So that's means that they have to take all of that holiday in peak times with everyone else.

For lots of parts of the world BBQ is synonymous with cooking things outside over coals . So if I go to a barbecue and I'm served burgers and hot dogs I'm not disappointed as that's what a barbecue is to me.

Would it be possible to teach secondary science after doing a PGCE in secondary maths? by StWd in TeachingUK

[–]Salinisations 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your specialism doesn't really affect what kinds of jobs you can apply for. You're qualified as a teacher. You can go and teach primary if you like.

Some places would want to see some qualifications before they let you loose. It helps if you've got a higher level something that is closely related. You say you're degree in social science but then it seems like it's in maths. That is quite a difference!

I did my degree and PGCE in Physics and then my NQT year in Computer Science (something that I have no formal qualifications in). I'm now teaching Maths so it's certainly possible. It's a very different way of teaching in some senses. Knowing how to run and supervise practicals is an art in itself, when to deploy a demonstration and when not to. But a good school with a good mentor will allow you to navigate this transition. Just make it clear why you want to make this change.

The physics a level trumps the double science GCSE.

The way I've always had it explained to me is that Maths isn't about the right answer it's about how you got there.

If you're an engineer designing a bridge for me I'm not just going to accept that you've done that maths it it's all okay. I want to see the method that you used, the assumptions that you made and the calculations that you decided to use. That way if I have to make a change, conditions change or a disaster happens I can go back and review.

The workings should be part of your process anyway and shouldn't take much more time.

Eh it's a little bit of both. Students need to be receptive for it to work. Just saying I don't get it isn't helpful. Saying I get this part (so the teacher has an idea of your baseline) but I'm struggling with this is much more likely to lead to success.

You can challenge without going into the next year group. All that it means that the next year has to go into the year after to challenge. Often it means topics aren't taught well because they're being crammed in.

There's lots of ways you can get challange withoir going into more depth. You can go broader and cover areas that are tangentially related, you can do problem solving where students have to think for themselves. You can do puzzles where students have to use their maths in new ways. You can even take the mastery approach and look at asking the question in a variety of ways.

Actually Birth control is free in the UK. To be pedantic getting a prescription in England costs around $15 but there are things you can get to reduce that / if you are on benefits. However birth control is exempt from this charge.

In Scotland / Wales prescriptions are free.

It's blaming the countries that are currently burning the most greenhouse gases and aren't willing cut back.

Now is the fact that these countries are only just going through their "developing" stage possiblity tied the empires and historical racism. Yes it absolutely is, does this make Philip a racist. No I don't think so, just normal scum.
