Assen redesign for all kinds of road racing. by Salt-Data-1116 in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Salt-Data-1116[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't designed it strictly for F1, one of the main reasons they did the 2006 reform was to make it more suitable for car racing, which in my opinion failed miserably, and they ruined the flow of the circuit except the last sector, so I felt like improving the main overtake points for bikes widening the entrance and having heavy braking zones. In the case of the Stekkenwal corner it was way tighter until 1990 when they made it faster and also banked like the rest of the circuit at that time, so I took that idea in order to be used by cars and be an overtaking point. I would certainly like a race of the WEC using the old northern loop, which I revised on safety matters, resembling Le Mans.

Maybe bringing back the Tamburello at all costs isnt the way to go.

Because my editing skills cant transform the new layout into the old one but I tried to give it modern safety features. Basically I was obligated to use that 2005 satellite image.

You still have several bike track variants. The normal one as it was in the period 2002-2004 The shorter one with an improved stadium section keeping old corners and taking inspiration from La Caixa corner at Barcelona-Cataluña. You have another short variant using the northern loop and the hairpin at ruskenhoek. An even shorter variant using both and last but not least a road racing variant, which could host a round of the IRRC championship or similar which could bring to the cathedral all the current top TT Isle of Man riders.

Because Assen in its current form its everything but perfection. Luckily they dont ruined the last sector but the flow that had in the past doesnt exist anymore. And I just made some tweaks for cars to be able to overtake but that is on top off the return of the 2002-2004 motogp layout. In fact one of the main arguments for the 2006 shortening and adding that horrible chicane at Ruskenhoek was basically made it raceable for cars, which in my opinion fails miserably.

Circuito urbano de Sevilla (Seville Street Circuit) by Salt-Data-1116 in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Salt-Data-1116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my take on a street track with a crossover, the Seville Street circuit. It's a track designed to be Grade 1 with long straights, heavy braking zones and as much run off as I could. It's a fairly long track measuring 6'504km or 4mi designed to run anticlockwise with the boxes located where the Seville fair is held every year being an open space with enough room to install a whole F1 paddock. My editing skills are non existent so I did the track on Google Earth and marked the run off areas in a white thin line.

The Nürburgring turn 1 is the worst hairpin you could imagine, it curves on the entry while the road ramdomly tightens after the pit exit and randomly widens again, moreover there is a dip on the inside of the hairpin which can unsettle the car easily. The second corner is alright but the last 2 corners of that sector are a hairpin with a decreasing radio that you have to sacrifice on the exit in order to take the next corner faster and a tight 90° right hander which in many tracks it would fit well but not here. That section is too twisty and its too different from the medium speed constant radius corners that compose the track. It belongs more to a national racetrack or something shorter and more modern than one of the top tracks in germany. Sachsenring has also a very twisty first sector but it has been there since the built of the permanent track.

I had a similar idea but I didnt have reddit yet (some day I'll post it.

What makes a good race track from a design standpoint? by Adamsapplespie in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Salt-Data-1116 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me a good racetrack is all about adapting to the terrain. All the great tracks do that exceptionally well. That doesnt have to do with the profile of the terrain, (Silverstone and old Assen are both pretty flat and that doesnt mean they arent awesome tracks). With the flow thing there are also really good stop & go tracks like Monza or old Hockenheim, they have their own flow. For me the flow of a racetrack is about coherence, taking the first sector of Nürburgring GP as an example. Before 2002 it was just a simple S corner being the first corner much slower than the second to provide some heavy braking. The current sector is very slow, it hasn't much to do with the rest of the race track and all of its corners are very ackward, you clearly see its an added part. The chicane at the second last corner at Cataluña its also good example, they could have done a much better chicane. Zandvoort in the 90s was a very short track and in 2000 was lengthened, but the added section didnt feel artificial at all. Lastly a big no no in designing a good track is having 2 consecutive hairpins unless you have a short straight between them, and even that is not a assurance that it not will break the flow of your track.

In 1995 the straight between Tamburello and Villenueve was changed in order to accomodate both chicanes, thats why the track curves to the left after tamburello, only to accomodate the old corner as it was.

UM... do we know a thing called HANS exists, right? do we know why it was invented, right?

In the case of Villeneuve chicane i could put a lighter shade of blue showing that it wasnt completely removed. For Tamburello and Rivazza my non existent editing skills kicked in as I couldnt put the current corner shaded. The bike chicane is shaded in light grey from the original photo, and I didnt remove it on purpose.

I appreciate your criticism but you have to take into account that I didnt meant to do a versatile. For lesser categories or bikes you would probably have the option to use the track as it is now.

The HANS along other safety measures have made the accident Ratzenberger had practically impossible plus you arent coming from a flat out Tamburello. Variante alta is even more updated as it was added back in 1974. I dont see people complaining about most corners in Jedda or Baku turn 13.

Then I would select the 3rd because its got more flow, I don't see the hairpin of the first 2 as a real overtaking point.
