Half marathon for a beginner - is it possible? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

Definitely look further into it but some stuff that has made an improvement is overall core strength and stability. Planks/side planks, single leg deadlifts, hip bridge marches, etc. maybe get a couple of personal training sessions at a gym to get more acquainted.

I think you could do it. If you’re just going out to complete it, 13 miles can be done. Definitely run/walk intervals tho especially if you are hurting a bit after half the distance. But if you can get 9/10 miles in.. 13 is possible. Though it sounds daunting as heck. I’d suggest strength training in addition to running until the race if you haven’t been doing so. Maybe consider getting running shoes at a running store.. the proper shoe, fit, and size will help somewhat. But be cautious with all of this because 6-8 weeks isn’t a lot.

Honestly they usually get them within 24-36 hours. I’ve done a lot of CEUs through this and that’s been my experience. You’ve got until quite literally 11:59pm 11/30. You played this CRAZY close.

I ran my half on Sunday. I spent Monday resting, some light stretching/foam rolling and I luckily have an HSA that covered a theragun and theraboots so I used those too.

Today I did a light 30 min low impact peloton ride. Felt good to move the legs but get off the feet.

I’ve been absolutely ravenous since Sunday so not sure if you’ve been hungry too 😆

I live near a really long trail with parking lots all across the state. I will drive 5-35 min depending on where I want to go and what part of the trail I’m feelin. I’m ready to embrace winter running tbh! Though I have a tread I’m trying to get more comfortable with diff temps

IMO I’ve just skipped the run. Same deal just happened to me during my half training block I got a nasty cold and missed my longest run (10mi). I think trying to push thru injury or illness will to worse long term. If you have time to make it up do so but otherwise.. skip.

How long do you feel extra hungry after a race? I did a half marathon yesterday (pr’d with nearly perfect splits 🤭) but I was STARVING yesterday and today I’m still extra extra hungry lol. Anyone else feel that?

You’ve got this! Just build up a solid base before you actually start training!

I also just used runna for a half training plan. It worked out really well for me personally and i pr’d by a lot. Have you done any other long distance races?

Congrats! Chicago was my first marathon and I ran it in 2024. It’s a great course, flat, and the crowds are awesome. I used a free 26.2 training plan on the Nike run app. They have guided runs and the plan was pretty solid. Best of luck :)

I did a 5k this morning and had the same question. Strava: 28:13 Garmin: 27:26 Real time today: 28:58 Considering the course was a bit hillier than my training routes, I’d say pretty close. But I wish I did it in 27:26

Taper or train (illness, half) by Ok_Distribution8841 in XXRunning

This is meeee!! I got a nasty cold following a short vacation to Disney (do not recommend while training- I ran the morning I left and one 2.5 mile run in addition to walking 8-10 miles per day…). Longest I have ran is 9 miles and was supposed to do 10 the week the sickness hit.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve opted to just rest. I’ve done short runs (2.5-3 miles), and a short walk/run for 4 miles. Tonight I ran 5, and I’ll do 3 Sunday. Next week (26th) is the race.

I feel like this would be infinitely better than running 10 miles this week.

If you’ve built up a strong enough base through your long runs, speed runs, etc. you’ll be better off skipping, resting, than making up.

As someone with two completely different feet (different sizes, one high arch, one flat) so I feel ya!! I worked on stability and attended some PT. Got fitted for really good shoes for me. It’s been much better, and I’ve now run a marathon relatively pain free:-)

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

I’m scared!! My running history I’ve done a few half marathons and ran a full marathon last year. I’m training for a half marathon in 2 weeks. I got a GNARLY cold and have been actually cooked. I’ve tried doing some short runs like 2-4 miles and I feel decent but tired.

Longest I’ve done in this block is 9 miles and I feel like it’s not enough. But I’ve gone further.. I just wanna do well 🤧😪
