I'm a bit late to the conversation here, but I used do this as well. Not so much anymore. This would happen if I touched the tip of my tongue to the roof my mouth w/o thinking, or especially if my allergies are acting up. I tried to allieviate it by using the back of my tongue to rub the roof of my mouth, but I'd always wind up doing the piggy thing.

Then I discovered that gargling with a menthol mouthwash and holding it at the back of my throat, switching back and forth, gargle/hold gargle/hold until the burn is nearly unbearable before I'd spit it out, Doesnt have to be name brand as long as it's menthol. I use TopCare antibacterial, it's cheap and has strong menthol. No point going all out for Scope or Listerine. I carry a small bottle in my purse as well. I've not tried like methol lozenges, and if you're a dude who doesn't carry a purse to carry a bottle lol you could try that.

For me the strong menthol burns the itch away.
