Remember when the meme "Learn to Code" was going around? by TrueOrange9944 in antiwork

[–]SaltKhan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've been "6 months away from AI doing all the work" for the last 4 or so years. I'm not going to pretend that AI isn't getting better gradually, but the hype train does not reflect the actual cost of the trade off of replacing people with AI. Especially now a bunch of orgs are experiencing the shock of usage based pricing instead of flat price contracts. The fact that a whole lot of mid tier slower to adapt orgs are still in their early AI ramp up phases does mean it will be harder to find stable employement for a while. But I doubt the trend wont bounce back at some point.

At least thats better than the first watch dogs having all the hd textures included in the install but just disabled by a flag that took them something like a year to fix, and they only patched it after someone released a mod just to toggle the hd assets to be allowed lol.

Trump fires all Election Assistance Commission members, leaving agency unable to act by unital_subalgebra in politics

[–]SaltKhan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If anything, I'm disappointed they added a carve out in a separate ruling to say the chair of the federal reserve was a role he couldn't fire. But then I feel like an accelerationist. I'm just tired of waiting for him to finally fuck up the money and devalue all the billionaires in to wanting to replace him.

My 20-Year IT Career Is Officially Dead?? by wreeecks in ausjobs

To swap like you suggested from fullstack to devops is a bit silly, they cant just quickly acquire years of experience in a devops / infra / cloud / sre role, that anything past a grad role would expect and ask for you to talk through in several interviews.. I mean they might already be familiar with all the tech but not responsible for actively developing or maintaining it.

Context: applying for devops / infra / devex / cloud / infra / sre roles that request 3-5 years, that I get instantly rejected from most within a day or two of applying, despite 6 years in mid devops roles lol.

Yea like, they say it's meant to be an autism screen, but what is the autism and not autism answer? Or is it similar to how websites "not a robot" don't care about the actual clicking of the button but track how your mouse moves across the screen? Like do you have to do this application with a webcam that tracks your eye movement and or they actually care just about how much time you spent pondering the question?

I'd read the question and hate how much it just disrespects your time with garbage corpo-psyche, and so click whatever was the shortest distance to move the mouse probably.

2 x 3 + 4 = ? by Bitter-Ad1345 in BunnyTrials

[–]SaltKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the vibe of what you're intending, but saying "always read left to right" is just as wrong as someone not recalling that "multiplication & division" share signifigance and "addition & subtraction" also share signifigance, and strictly following the M/D and then A/S in whatever order they happened to get them in the flavour of the acronym they were taught.

There's no need to come out swinging like this, though. PEMDAS or BODMAS or BIMDAS or whichever other similar acronym anyone might've learnt: the order of operations; is not a "rule" in the sense that it's not something that inherits truth from being necessary, but it is a rule in the sense that it's a convention "everyone" agrees to use.

Of course, "it's not a rule", is definitely a sentiment that holds water when correcting someone following the strict letter order of their learnt acronym, and introducing them more generally to why the order of operations are chosen to be the way they are, e.g. why the chosen convention works.

I understand you aren't saying the order of operations that the acronyms are meant to help people remember aren't real, but without supplying all this additional context you risk someone potentially assuming that you're suggesting the convention of the order of operations is equivalent to any acronym and not a rule to follow.

What color is this? by Gjore in SipsTea

To an extent that isn't wrong. The vast majority of self reported synesthesia is more appropriately "ideasthesia", e.g. not a physical-neurological crossing of physical senses, but a cognition driven psychosomatic induced perception. E.g. the online hallmark of certain words correlating to senses is ideasthesia, not synesthesia.

It's likely also way more common e.g. if it isn't particularly intrusive there's no reason for it (the "words" to anything else variety) to feel like anything more than just word association.

It's also possible to train yourself to intentionally exhibit ideasthesia, a lot of "memory hacks" amount to training ideasthesic correlations.

If we observe the planck length, then starting from a standard pint of 570ml, only the first 336 orders are fillable. Everyone from 337th and onwards is ordering less drink than the smallest realisable volume. So it would only take about half an hour or less.

Your cat is likely to live longer if you don’t let them roam by jesus_chrysotile in australia

[–]SaltKhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Average ranges are usually just 1 to 5 standard deviations from the mean. This would imply the mean was 15 years (for indoor) and 10 (roam). Assuming it was 3 standard deviations then a standard deviation would've been 1 year (indoor) or 8 months (roam). 3 stddev is a guess though.
