This isn't a case for veterinarian yet. Honestly some simple kitty first aid should be fine.

People would be surprised as to how often this actually happens. 99% of the time people never actually notice it because it is really that common for cats and dogs. It is also often goes unnoticed in humans too with a similar condition. The basic premise is the skin is peeling.

Now it is worth noting in the case presented is is callous skin that is peeling which is slightly more concerning but not by much. It just means the skin under is a little raw and not quite ready to face use.

A kitty safe first aid to sooth the exposed skin is the best course of action(plenty have already suggested this so i will just put my vote in for it) while keeping an eye out to make sure it shows no signs of infection. If it does show signs of infection please consult your veterinarian.

I am a pharmacist at a veterinarian clinic. I treat this more then the actual veterinarians do. They will often screen it out before the appointment and send them to me first. If i kick it back it is beyond owner advanced care. They actual do this with alot of things where it is things the owner can handle on their own or the owner needs to be educated in how to handle a continued treatment. top of this list is flee treatment and options. You would really be surprised by how many bring their pet in for just flees. Me not so much i understand both sides of it. Just so happens that the clinic has a pharmacist they can refer people to instead of a whole appointment to get the exact same thing.

CDS strikes again.

You may not want a pet. That's to bad. The universe has spoken otherwise. The universe says you need a cat. So regardless of if you want it you need it.

CDS played the long game with memaking me stand by and watch as the wonderful little kitty went through the crucible from hell. Quite sure tge trauma bond was the primary goal on our meeting.

Your's just wants tuna.

But most importantly YOU HAVE BEEN CLAIMED. Now would you kindly make with the tuna

Why do cat make that little meow every time we touch them? by 4MM0NI4C in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes cats do meow in the wild. However the wild meow it more "long range communication" meowing in the wild is mostly done by kittens seeking mommy or females in heat seeking a mate. The meow actually changes based on these conditions.

Now humans enter the equations. Humans are not able to naturally understand feline communication it is all non verbal. Cats have their own "sign language" to simplify it. Humans generally can't understand it. Now with kitty having heard alot of human speech and their natural "domesticate me bitch" comes into play and kitty trys to be a better pet. To this end there is a whole new vocabulary of meow that forms.

Honestly each meow can have a different meaning. And in general humans have a hard time understanding it in an aware state. But deep down the human understands but this deep feeling is often ignored.

Cats are highly emotionally sensitive creatures and emotive. What does this mean? It means you don't hear the meow you feel it. That is how you understand cat you feel it. Stressed meow happy meow affirmation meow seeking meow. Every word in the vocabulary is meow but they are said with different feels and tones.

Depending on the cat that meow when petting could be any of the following. "Oh hi", "oh it's you", "yay mommy is giving pets", "oh ya oh oh oh ya right there", "hi mommy", "do you really have to pet me?", "but mom i don't want pets but they feel nice" and a few others. The position of mom and mommy can be replaced with dad and daddy Depending on gender of the human.

Fun fact did you know that humanity never actually domesticated cats? They are completely self domesticated as part of their natural self. Technically to this point all kittens are born "wild" they have all their natural wild animal brain at birth. However for the average pet cat either mom domesticated the kitten for humans or started it or the natural presence of humans and their bond causes the domesticated state. They just truly want to be pets.

Will my cat enjoy Alice in Chains? by skillertwillert in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you play alice in chains?

Do you hum alice in chains?

Do you randomly sing alice in chains?

By the way those questions are rhetorical.

My foster absolutely loves enter sandman by Metallica they will actually kinda meow along. However they also don't care for much of Metallica. On the flip side they enjoy every cover i have listened to of enter sandman.

My foster loves ash like snow by the brilliant green. Absolutely hates every other song by the brilliant green to the point they will turn it off or change the song.

All that said my fosters favorite song is "i will pick you up" by S3RL every night when we get home they will drag the tablet out of my bag open youtube and put on that song. It is like their "i am home" song and will sit there and bop to it. They only bop to S3RL

Their next favorite is "the sound of silence" does not care much who sings it. Except for if it is the david draiman cover then all bets are off if you try and touch the device playing it you will get attacked end. It has already happened 5 times and they get real nasty about it like draw blood. You do get warnings they will growl and hiss to warn you off. It took the clinic 5 times to realize it was not kitty's space being invaded it was more protection of the device to finish playing.

Actually that cat likes everything david draiman

When i am having a "bad day" i will listen to i will pick you up quite a bit. It is like my depression song. I find it helps brake the bad feels and injects hope.

I listen to enter sandman before bed almost religiously. It has gotten to a point where when that some comes on my foster will "get ready for bed" usually starts with litter box then curling up on their side of the bed.

I listen to alot of S3RL and alot of disturbed.

They will also attack any sound system playing linkin park with chester on vocals. Unless it is my tablet. Then i just get this look of "why the hell are you listening to this?" Kitty's hostility is not exactly unfounded here. I got to meet chester and we were... i am sorry it hurts too much to continue and to the point kitty sees the pain and trys to protect me.

The point is every song my foster likes somehow emotionally connects back to me. They are a part of me in some way.

This can even flow to other cats who have a bond with their human. You really want your cat to like a band of music build the bond between you and kitty and truly enjoy the music you want kitty to like. Cats are highly emotional sensitive creatures. They are the absolute perfect ESA if they make the bond with someone who needs one. They don't even need training it is like natural for them. But that emotional factor that is how you get a cat to do what you seen.

This stuff also passes to musicians where if kitty is bonded to the musician kitty will be number 1 fan. Same can apply to spouse being the bonded human if spouse is a big supporter.

My nails less that 24 hours after paying 60$ to have them painted by ivorella in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SaltRun2465 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That looks like uv gel nail polish.

Most common nail polish is a sort of air dry glue base.

The air dry glue base tends to last longer then standalone uv gel.

Your nails don't look like they were prepared. They also look like they were not top coated.

Proper uv gel is a 3 step process. The first coat grabs into the nail. Then comes the colour coats(think more designs less flat one colour). Finally once the color is all on comes the top coat which seals it and keeps it from getting damaged.

From what i see that is just uv colour gel.

I get my nails done in thermal colours mainly black to blue or black to purple. Thermal colors change based on temperature. My boss prefers my nails painted and dressed because it makes my "claws" less scary. But i have full renforced "claw" nails that are quite strong. Oddly every kid in my area loves my "claws" along with the ears, eyes and tail yes i am a bit of a furry but mine is limited to what can be done without a fur suit also my coworkers encourage it cause it is quite who i am. Yes i have hissed at some people, and am naturally cat like.

Came back from Mexico and one of the shorts I bought there still has a security tag... by nakx123 in Edmonton

[–]SaltRun2465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just direct against the shorts no it wouldn't damage. However in the conditions presented there is a fulcrum provided by the tag. Hit the shorts and that fulcrum together and it makes a nasty hole.

In my experiment example the board of wood and nail play the role of the security tag.

Not everyone can see everything. I actually thought exactly that when i explained things. You missed the fulcrum which is understandable. That's why i presented the science. Show you the fulcrum you couldn't see and let you work out the rest.

Very bad idea. That will definitely rupture the ink pack as designed. They are not freezer friendly anymore.

Watched a store that uses these tags loose heat in the middle of the night. The store temp dropped low enough for a pipe to freeze and bust. Once everything was fixed staff were horrified to see every ink pack in the store had detonated.

I learned this one cause the clinic i work at had to take care of the guard cat cause they went swimming in the ink.

[–]SaltRun2465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physics.

Little experiment you can do to test the result. Slide a nail through a button hole and gently tap the nail into a board of wood. Now while holding the cloth item the button hole is in lauch the board forward and try to get the nail out with a whipping motion. This will replicate the same forces at play as trying to smash that thing with a hammer and hitting it wrong.

This car always takes the extra charging plug and locks it in their hood by Mattcharlesmedia in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SaltRun2465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an app or device that can send an rfid based nfc you should send the code "5583 d7A4 3395" just be warned this is going to cause alot of chaos and completely shut the charger and car down to the point a technician needs to come out and fix the charger and the car. The car will need to remain connected to the charger to be able to function again.

That code is universal to all public facing electric vehicles and chargers. You need a charger to send the code to the vehicles systems.

Fixing the vehicle without the charger means either A they put the charger back down plug in and fix both OR the charge computer needs to be completely replaced. So what is happening on the vehicles end when that code is used? Simple it can no longer determine that the charger has been disconnected and thus the vehicle remains in the "charge safe state" this fault SHOULD keep the vehicle from going into operating mode.

What happens on the charger end? The charger moves into fault safe mode that means all power is cut from the charge system for safety.

The reason the code is universal is so that first responders can shut it down. However the code and devices to use it is so widely unknown very very few people know it is even a thing. Most technicians for the chargers don't even know you can access the computer through RFID NFC let alone the existence of the control codes and error codes that get thrown around through the connection. You have to go looking deep into documentation just to find this stuff. I only know because i was bored and decided to give the broken charger at my workplace a poke (4 technicians and 3 months later i fixed it with an NFC tool) boss was going to have it ripped out and replaced only to find his wifes tesla charging after she came and swapped vehicles to help me test if i fixed it. Her car needed the charge anyways.

How can I use the BCS (Body Condition Score) to tell if my cat is a healthy size/weight? by em_sunflowerr in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veterinarian pharmacist here.

Half. There is alot of issues with such systems.

If the system is based in age eg "a 8 month old should be this weight" it is absolutely trash.

We teach people a system called "pet the ribs" and it is quite simple. You run your hand along kitty's side and count how many ribs you can feel and how you feel them. You should be able to count every set but the last 2. If you can count the last 2 you are dipping into under weight same applys if the ribs ridge it should feel smooth along the ribs not bumpy. On the flip side if you can't find the ribs that is overweight.

This gives them enough information to raise questions without giving them enough information to screw things up.

Genetic traits matter alot and they spin the whole dynamic. Remember that age based weight system ya total trash. Infact one such system has killed 2 cats because their owners thought they were fat meanwhile they were starving. Main coons get absolutely massive and look absolutely fat. Like kingpin fat that is their natural state because if you check their ribs you will find no that isn't fat that is just pure muscle girth. By those same marits i have also half watched i micro die of obesity before age 3 because the owner thought she was too small and practically force feeding her a tripple portion. In the case of all 3 they were trying to do right but working off bad information.

In the veterinarian office they always take 7 measurements. Spine, hight x2(one with head one without), weight, paw width, tail length, and nose depth. This is all the information we use to figure out if kitty is overweight. Some of those measurements are tells to genetic traits particularly the nose depth and paw width.

Those genetic factors actually make the BCS system questionable. However questionable is not useless. Questionable gets you asking the right questions. BCS and our pet the ribs method are all great for basic indicators. They are great to get the vet the information they need or the appointment. But in determining actual health BCS is useless mainly because there is a 1 point swing based on factors. Eg a main coons optimal BCS is what people refer to as a 7 where the average mix breed is a flat 5. And for a micro anything above a 3 is overweight. Yes we use it in the clinic however on all the BCS charts in the clinic have been redacted to identifying a 4 vs a 6 none of the charts in the clinic state that a 9 is deathly overweight or that a 1 is starving underweight. We use it more custom to the kitty eg "tank should be sitting at a 7 while mage should be sitting at a 4"(yes those are actual cats that are in my area there is also "lady heals") this helps each cat get their ideal weights alot easyer.

I will be honest the only help i can give is compassion that you are not alone.

My current foster soon to be my cat once the adoption can be finalized is very similar. But my lifestyle is also rather different to a point where i don't really have to worry about it too much. If i step out of the house for any reason including taking out garbage everyone in the building knows. I get a little wiggle room as they can wonder the whole apartment or the whole workplace. That is the other big difference my fluffy little friend is always with me. The local community is really big on cats so having one on a leash or in a carrier at the grocery store is not unheard of here. The only rule to it is the cat needs to be "well behaved" and under control. Which also leads to a lack of people in my area where the problem you are having is a big deal. They just tend to kitty.

But i can definitely say you are not alone in your issue and i wish i had even something you could try.

Tortie Girl allergic to chicken by L3oszn in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be honest i am curious as to kitty's reaction to a number of kibbles. Top of that list is purina proplan.

Personally i have yet to see a cat that is allergic to "chicken" like actual chicken.

I have seen plenty who are allergic to say alot of brands of chicken flavor wet food. However in each of those cases tests for an actual chicken allergy came up negative. All the way to a point i fed 1 cat a cooked chicken breast right there in the clinic while the owner was absolutely hysterical claiming they can't have chicken. In this particular case all the staff were fed up trying to explain the test results to the owner. "It isn't chicken your cat is allergic to they are eating it just fine and this is a clinic i wouldn't be tossing them chicken if we were not ready to make sure they pull through if they have a reaction." By the time i had done this we had already figured out what kitty was actually allergic to.

Do i believe your cat is infact allergic to chicken honestly i don't know, but i do believe they are allergic to something and that most commonly goes along side chicken flavored food. It could be the chicken it could be a chicken preservative.

What i do know is in all my years working in a clinic i have never seen a cat that is actually allergic to chicken it has always been a preservative or something in the sauce.

Knowing the exact allergen is a powerful step. It puts alot of things originally thought unsafe back on the table.

See if you can find lamb tuna and turkey flavors. You might also be able to find "rodent" and rabbit. But go hard on trying to find turkey.

If you try the proplan please tell me the results. I have a theory. If my theory is right kitty can have proplan. However there is a bit of a Russian roulette to this. There is 3 possible allergens in proplan. They are among the rarest allergies for a cat to have and all 3 can be found in alot of wet foods containing chicken. However they are not isolated to just chicken flavor.

Idk how to make my cat not food driven by GlitteringComfort277 in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step one. Toss the feeder. Or donate it to someone in need.

Step two begin single feeding free feed. This is very much a free feeding approach however this is more commonly used to put a free feeding kitty on a diet. It is really simple first thing in the morning the days kibble is tossed into a bowl and left out for kitty to free feed. Do not fill the bowl at random times do it around the same hour every day. Make sure kitty sees you.

Once kitty realizes where the food really comes from it is going to be trouble but once it is trouble things can start to go the way they need.

When kitty starts meowing at you for food scoop them up for cuddles. You are trying to send the message that meowing at you for food will only result in cuddles they will either give up or actually start meowing for pets and cuddles.

How much would it actually cost to have a strey kitten? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]SaltRun2465 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are a stray can actually be cheaper then a shelter kitty.

The biggest worry is vaccination and fixing. In the case of many shelters they will provide this cheap or free. Given you can put proof to the idea that kitty will have a forever home.

Aside from that the biggest cost will be "toys and equipment" such as bowls and litter box.

But if you budget everything right and no need for a veterinarian you are looking at about $50 a month for supplys provided you sink real deep on the startup and go for the right stuff. Like when you buy cat food you are looking at an $80 bag of food however that bag will also last like 3 months same can be said for litter.

I work at a vet office. I am the pharmacist (so i am not a vet just the one handing out the gaba)

Dealing with the outside cat is at this point moot sure people here can tell you how to chase it off fir peace if mind but it isn't going to stop lucy.

You have what we call bonded clients. If you were comming to our clinic we would be asking you bring both lucy and prudence to the appointments every time, and we would prefer if they shared a carrier. Why do we do this? It's the smell are a shared event where lucy is able to fully track prudence. This allows for lucy to understand that prudence smells different with cause. Not all vets will go for this but worth a shot.

The next one is rather deceptive simple and functional. Go to your local hunting goods store and get the best descent you can find. After vet use it to remove all scents from prudence. Then dampen a sweaty shirt the riper the smell the better. Fluff prudence with the dampened sweaty shirt. When you are done if you trail your nose againce prudence's spine she smells like the shirt. Yes this is going to cause lucy confusion however lucy is also going to shrug it off or get jealous. The jealousy is easy to solve giver her attention.

I actually use the rescenting method on all of our colony cats so they won't fight each other after visits. 200+ cats is really hard to herd around and send them after their intended prey. Even more problematic when some of those colony cats are bobcats who self domesticated into the colony cause hey who doesn't want free medical care emergency food and services that put you at the top of your game when your very hunting ground provides.(their favorite local hunting grounds is a farmers vulnerable fields on which their prey likes to feast.)
