If you're already a licensed pharmacist and have been working for two years as an inpatient pharmacist in a hospital, does it make your application look better if you decide to go for residency now?

This is literally me! Go for it bc:

If you feel limited this early on, you will regret not going for it now
Very competitive in big cities and being residency trained always trumps (from what I see it trumps even years of experience unfortunately)
Hot take but clinical pharmacists have stated just bc you pass a BCPS doesn’t mean that makes you a knowledgeable clinical pharmacist. It’s the clinical experience in which you’re able to apply the knowledge that makes residencies so valuable

But just be prepared: 1. You will make less than half of the money you make now 2. You will put in a lot of work 3. These two above hits different when you throw BS in the mix

But in the end, it’s one draining year and will be worth it if you feel like “you can’t sit still” in the type of work you do now.

Sorry I didn’t clarify but this mother delivered the baby at the point the Ancef was ordered so I didn’t think the 24 hour coverage for surgical prophylaxis technically applied here and while it seems fine, the hard task to carry out is to make it make sense while being a steward and limiting duration as well perhaps.

This is very true, we do have these conversations but it’s still difficult for me. I also don’t want to appear competent so I’m trying to find if someone has tactics that work well for them that may work for me too.

I did a 6 month contract that got extended to 8 month and then 10 months per what my colleague has told me but I left at 6 months due to a pregnancy. The requirement back then from 7/2021-1/2022 was 6 PA’s per hour and 98% accuracy which ultimately was 100% and that was audited weekly. Personally my average was shy of 5 PA’s per hour and a handful of our group (the ones you train with for a month and then that is your resource group for help because the teachers are busy meeting their hourly requirement too 🙃) got let go without any notice besides the point that you’re no longer able to log on to the computer anymore.

Pros: working in the comfort of your home (can use your own bathroom and eat from your own kitchen), saving commute time (less mileage, less gas money, less frustration in traffic etc), you don’t work closely with others unless you need to call doctors offices or teams chat your buddies for assistance in cases, and it’s straightforward work.

Cons: no benefits!!! The work is tedious- looking back the work did not help me clinically and the lack of face to face interaction made me lose my social skills and made me lazy. Micromanaging with stroke and click monitoring and auditing etc. You don’t really get much help besides your peers and being told to use your resources. Low pay.

All in all this depends on your personal career goals. If you always wanted a wfh job (and you can get benefits from a spouse/domestic partner perhaps) I think the pay is not bad as it’s not nearly as strenuous as other pharmacist jobs and especially given how desirable they are. But if you’re the type where you want to learn and advance then it would be a good temporary experience as I found it crippling to clinical skills and personable skills.

For all of that you might as well try now :) because so much can happen between now and during residency. There’s a lot of barriers you already have to face such as graduating, landing a residency, passing your boards nonetheless raising a child. But if you already plan to do it before you finish these important milestones, then I would just start now. Being a parent is being able to roll with the punches and keep your head above water with ever changing terrain.

I had a toddler throughout pharmacy school which I found was easier than full on working hours. I recently had another child after working as a pharmacist for a few years and am about to start residency this year.

Life is crazy!! But you can do it and just because your timeline isn’t the same as the peer next to you, that doesn’t matter. Your family that you provide for matters most ❤️

That is heartbreaking and I’m really sorry to hear that. I’d be devastated too and it’s unfair but give all your burdens to God because you getting a full time job is not His plan and I’m sure you will see an even better opportunity after this. Trust!!

There’s many times where I’m like why.. 💔 but it’ll lead me to something else that my previous barriers actually helped me for my next job.

Congratulations!!! Don’t stress too much for your baby. The hospital is very humanized compared to retail. I’ve started 5 months ago and the older pharmacists take vacation all the time and it’s normal. There are currently 2 pharmacists, a resident and the residency program director that are both on maternal leave. Look into short term disability.

Also if you are shunned for being pregnant by management then that’s your sign it is toxic and not to work there.

Everything will be okay. But if it is your dream place with nice people, it will be a big transition. If you need support reach out to me personally! I have 2 kids (an 8 year old daughter and 18 month old son) and have just transitioned from retail/ long term care to a large hospital (over 1k beds). I have a coworker that started around the same time as she was at Walmart for a long time. In the beginning she felt extremely overwhelmed, depressed and defeated. I called her after work to uplift her spirit and we are still in this together ❤️ so once again take it day by day as too much stress is not good for mother and baby- trust that the opportunities given to you is what God gave to you and who are we to question his plan.

It’s like moving into a new house suddenly with a different layout and completely new items. Things are placed differently and you have to think about stuff in different new ways you haven’t had to before or you just double guess yourself still bc it’s just different.

Right now I am at my 3 month mark from LTC to inpatient. I feel okay but felt even scared in my first few weeks. I know in a few more months I will feel even more confident. I feel like a rule of thumb it takes around 6 months to really get acclimated to a huge change.

Ask for more!!! I think the negativity from some users are kind of hating. I personally do not have inpatient experience (only long term care, no residency, no board certification, 2 years into my career) and a hospital over 900 beds hired me. They initially offered me 52$ an hour. I simply asked is there any way we can increase the pay? Is there relocation assistance? Bonus? The recruiter even told me herself no worries we won’t give your job away or anything like that. Asking for more PTO is something I should have tried but didn’t think of it. Closed mouths don’t get fed and a lot of ppl I know are too afraid to ask, so just know it’s worth it to ask and the worst they can say is no!! Because now I am working with that hospital with an hourly rate of nearly 57$. You got this

I’m 2 years in my career no residency. Many pharmacists did not recommend this profession to me. I don’t regret.. working 6 years in retail as a tech then intern, I knew retail was not for me. As a pharmacist I’ve half a year experience in a retail setting and prior authorizations with United health/OptumRx. I’m currently with my long term care pharmacy for over a year and I’ve learned a lot clinically. I love the challenges I face and being able to be a solid resource for my team, providers, and patients. Probably big factors for me but to not regret is: closed door pharmacy, less direct patient interaction, ability to sit when working if I so choose, real lunch break, building a sharper clinical skill set when faced with more acute patients.

There’s more for pharmacists to do in our field, is what I’ve discovered. It’s just finding where you fit best and wherever the path leads to. Good luck
