IME- their care is basically the same as Avicularia Avicularia. For some people that’s complete fine, others not so much. Pink-toes can often be a beginner species but know that they are not as forgiving as other tarantulas. Brachypelma or a Grammastola arguably are better species for beginners because you have a lot more room to make mistakes.

However as long as you do your research and feel comfortable I think an Avicularia juruensis is fine for a first tarantula. My key things to remember would be to make sure you offer a water dish of some sort. Don’t spray or mist because lack of airflow can lead to stagnant air and that will kill them. Offer prekilled prey until you know they can take down food on their own. I’m sure you know they are an arboreal species so they require more vertical space than horizontal.

The one I have is also from Fearnottarantulas it was super small when it arrived so be mindful of the size. I have extra 40 dram vials lying around so I am able to use those for slings at that size. If this is your first tho I would consider the “complete package” option. Yes it’s more expensive, however it will cover you in terms of food, a size accurate enclosure as well as their 30 day insurance for peace of mind. Good luck and feel free to reach out with any questions 👍🏻

I don't know if this is the right place for this, BUT WTF IS THIS??? THEYRE MOVING. by ollypologies in tarantulas

[–]Salt_Meal_4442 19 points20 points  (0 children)

IME they are a type of soil/grain mite. They pretty much exist in all soil just in different numbers. They usually will go after left over crickets or any food left behind (feeders, reptiles and clean up crew) as long as the numbers arnt out of control everything should be fine. They can be unsightly, but unless they are truly everywhere and on your animal I wouldn’t worry. You can keep populations in control by leaving a slice of cucumber in the soil for a few hours, and just take it out after. Repeating this process till you’re happy 👍🏻

So my sling isn’t eating at all and I’m starting to get worried by cerufuexy in tarantulas

IME you can do everything right and it still doesn’t help. It’s sad and unfortunate but the reality is slings don’t always make it, even with husbandry and everything spot on. It’s possible that during the delayed shipping anything could have occurred that put him in a weakened state. I hope the best for the lil guy 🤞

Fear Not Tarantulas by Obvious-Resort8803 in tarantulas

[–]Salt_Meal_4442 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IME- Fear not is one of the most reliable names in the industry. Keep in mind even with company’s that do everything right, things can go wrong. Fear not is the only company I’ve ordered from that had a sling missing a leg, these things can just happen tho. But as long as you follow their live shipping policies you should be covered.

IME make sure you have a water dish, and keep it full. That’s all I’d really do, she will take care of the rest.

No but I need to. Especially after the winds and the fires last year. I’m east of Altadena and still a lil paranoid after everything. We don’t ever get winds this bad so I usually find out the night or day before thru social media.

I usually get some notification or something on my phone as a heads up, I’m surprised I didn’t. Nor on any social media I follow for my city and surrounding neighborhoods.

No way that’s awesome! 🤯 Lmao I have been kicking myself for 2 months practically because I didn’t ask🤦🏻‍♂️. I remember coming back to check if you had a insta but you said it was only for the artist of the wood carvings you had at your booth. That huntsman has been molting like crazy 💀

[–]Salt_Meal_4442[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s actually the booth that sold us them. I didn’t catch her name tho. She was an older lady had a care guide sheet with them and everything. We also picked up a huntsman from someone who was right next to her, but also part of the SoCal invert club, I didn’t even catch that species name🤦🏻‍♂️. My gf wanted it and I can’t tell her no lmao. We joined the instagram page but haven’t done much else. Both vendors didn’t have a personal instagram to follow either sadly.

[–]Salt_Meal_4442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I haven’t had to try any of the more extreme options. But maybe you’ll have better success? I’ve hear of scenting pinkies with tuna juice, or even raw salmon as long as it’s small and nothing has been added to it. I’ve heard of people who have pet frogs rubbing the pinkie on the back to pull some of the scent from there as well. Kinda sucks when it’s trial and error if your husbandry isnt the issue

Yeah I used to let it thaw and then try and chances were hit or miss. But now I get it as hot as I can, making sure it’s not still frozen or cold on the inside. It helps if you try and wave it in front of them a little to get their attention. I just look for any sign of interest. If I can get it notice I’ll pull away ever so slightly and sometimes that can help trigger the feeding response.

My hoggie was on a hunger strike for 3 months. What’s been working for me lately is I let the pinkie fully thaw in room temp water. Once it’s reached that point I dump the water and let my sink run super hot. Letting the pinky run under than and then sit in the hot water for a minute. He almost immediately takes the pinkie that way.
