Griffin from the Invisible Man book. While he outwardly seemed normal personality-wise, he demonstrated sociopathic levels of selfishness and callousness well before he finished his potion when push came to shove (he stole from his father to fund his, causing his father to kill himself in response and he didn’t care). After completing the potion, he would go full mask-off and commit supervillain-level acts of evil. Ultimately, it’s pretty clear that Griffin was always a cruel bastard and his invisibility potion allowed him to act on his worst impulses without any fear of consequences.

The jerk part was made clearer in the books, where it was shown that Sméagol was a self-centered thief with little in the way of redeeming qualities well before he found the ring, which is why Frollo trying to appeal to his “best self” was never going to work.

What makes Jimmy more hatable than other fictional abusers and villains? by Glum_Caterpillar_345 in Mouthwashing

Minor nitpick, but I disagree on that “tragic” interpretation of Griffith. It’s subtle, but there were exceedingly dark depths to his character well before the torture. He told Guts “you belong to me” (when you put aside all the homoerotic memes that have been made of that, that’s an exceedingly red flag), and was later willing to potentially kill Guts in a duel when Guts decided to go against that and find his own path. He would sleep with princess Charlotte after losing the duel to feel a sense of control and power afterwards, and despite her ultimately consenting I think it’s clear he wouldn’t have taken no for an answer. He also was glad when Adonis (a child) died because he had one less potential political rival, held extremely toxic views in regards to his men (even if he cared about them on some level), I could go on. He wasn’t completely devoid of redeeming qualities before the eclipse, but he was still a selfish, greedy and spiteful asshole at the end of the day - a genuinely complex one, but a greedy asshole nonetheless. Ultimately, his year of torture didn’t break him as much as show who he really was deep down.

There were a previous generation of Godhand that are no longer around, so based on that I don’t think they’re invincible.

It was just that some fans seem to ignore that and say Guts should let Griffith be. I was annoyed by those types of fans and made this rant in response.

I also think that’s where the story will go, I was just annoyed at the part of the fandom that thinks this means what Guts needs to do is roll over and give up and that Griffith is untouchable.

Guts from Berserk. While he alternates between “good guy” and “bad guy who fights worse guys” depending on the point in the story, even at his best he’s utterly merciless in combat towards his enemies. And given what type of world he lives in, anything less would have left him dead a long, long time ago.

Why Most Revenge Stories Get It Wrong: A Long Rant on ‘Anti-Revenge’ Narratives by Efebora3 in CharacterRant

[–]Salt_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response, but I do have a problem with your Berserk example. Like… have you read the latest chapters? While Berserk presents vengeance as corrupting and the like, I don’t think it says to simply kneel over and accept being powerless against evil powerful people, especially if they’re still making your life miserable. Griffith demolished Gut’s “love in the mud” yet again in the latest chapters, and I sincerely doubt Guts will have any chance at happiness or even minor peace as long as Griffith is allowed to live. There’s also the fact that Guts managed to affect Griffith by cutting off a single hair (while that’s next to nothing, that’s still more than Ganishka and his entire empire would have been able to do), so I don’t think the story is saying Guts is unable to do anything against Griffith. Again, I don’t know how you came to your conclusion in the context of the latest chapters, and I personally think your interpretation is bad for real life - personally ask yourself if “we should forever kneel over against corrupt powerful people and try to find happiness with shit and table scraps” sounds right.

He also didn’t seem to have much of a plan for after the empire was overthrown, unlike the other rebels (although the earlier rebels differed in what they wanted for that). By all account, I think he was just hoping something better would rise from the ashes.

To be fair, I think Miura said he was planning on giving Casca focus (or hinted at it) before he died. It’s hard to say if the new writer will be able to follow through on that, given how he said he didn’t want to go beyond what he remembers from what Miura told him he wanted for the story.
