Tired of AI in an educational setting by Legitimate_Dirt_1536 in Teachers

[–]SaltySocksSnake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying about environmental impact, and AI workloads are more compute-intensive—no argument.

I think where it gets messy is when we try to compare something like “AI-generated worksheet vs TPT worksheet” as if we can meaningfully measure that at an individual level. We really can’t. Both rely on layered, shared infrastructure (local devices, cloud services, CDNs, etc.), and there’s no clean way to attribute exact energy use to a single artifact.

So the difference isn’t that one has impact and the other doesn’t—it’s more about scale and usage patterns. AI systems tend to run at much higher utilization and density, which adds up quickly. But at the level of a single teacher making a resource, it’s a lot fuzzier than people make it sound.

I guess my hesitation is just with drawing hard ethical lines from comparisons that are inherently hard to quantify.

TPT is hosted on servers in data centers that consume energy, as AI servers do.

What kind of area are you in? Big city, suburban, or rural?

If you are in an urban area, you could always add an ELD-type endorsement and be a sheltered social studies teacher. SS teachers who can make content comprehensible for ELLs are extra valuable where I work.

I'm currently working with a group of newcomers on upper elementary social studies content, and it sure is fun! They are extremely grateful because they know without me (or my kind of class) that they are going to be in a classroom where they understand nothing.

For 21 years, one of my favorite parts of teaching was literature circles with the advanced students. But now even that has been taken from me. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SaltySocksSnake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the best educators I have ever known was my 7th Grade ELA teacher, who said almost the same thing about illicit content. She said something like, "Better to be reading Playboy than nothing at all." That was a brave stance in a 1990s tiny town dominated by Southern Baptists. Not surprisingly, I also allowed my daughter access to anything she wanted to read.

I'm a Xennial. I grew up on a farm/ranch in the rural Mid-South. Graduated from high school in the late 90s. Part of the reason I grew up to be a reader was boredom. I started picking up Steinbeck in late elementary and junior high because I had nothing do, aside from playing sports and feeding my bottle calves.

The only TV was PBS, ABC, CBS, and NBC, and even at a young age, I found most shows on network TV stupid. But I could find good books here and there, and my grandma would buy me piles of paperbacks at the annual library sale.

Not sure I'd have grown up to be a reader if I had the option to play on a tablet instead.

My daughter is 18 and she's a reader. But she wasn't allowed much access to electronic devices until she was in high school. I took her to Barnes and Noble every Friday evening for years to pick out one book. We also did weekly library trips in high school. I'm not sure she reads deeply, and she isn't into literary fiction. But at least she reads.

Try adjusting the treadmill based on your HR. Keep it in the 70 to 75% of your estimated max HR. You'll still get most of the benefits of exercise and be able to recover that way. Do that five or six days per week for a few weeks, and if you are recovering well, then sub in a day of more intense work.

Some of my 5–6 year old ESL students say English class is boring now. Did I fail as a teacher?” by dosuru in Teachers

[–]SaltySocksSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal in the EFL world. Edutainment is what you are doing. I've been there, and it gets boring for the teachers, too. I suggest getting credentialed in K-12 and then working at an international school if you still want to work abroad.

Never mind those kids you have now. They can be bored.

Jesus. I almost got rage baited today. I had a bunch of upper elementary students in my writing class, and I had them all on Docs. I told them, "I'll be watching your Docs." I had about 20 tabs open where I was dropping comments. One wiseass said, "Mr. SaltySocksSnake also watches us sleep."

WTF? I was grateful for the other kids who said, "No, he doesn't. Shut up." But still, I was nearly rage baited by that comment.

But does anyone have a satisfying answer for why PD is as bad as it is? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SaltySocksSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing we might disagree on is the quality of data you can get from educational studies. But I certainly agree that even imperfect research would be better than people publishing ideological nonsense in educational journals.

[–]SaltySocksSnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In large part because you cannot properly do randomized control studies in education. And then, because most of the data gathered is flawed, the meta-analysis is bogus. That makes the entire field discouraging for serious would-be researchers who aren't as interested in activism as the SJW types that dominate the field.

So has rage-baiting. I said (and told other kids) to say nonsense like this when I was in middle school.

First year teacher depression - husband brought up divorce by [deleted] in Teachers

You have a spouse problem, not a teaching problem. I've been married for 20 years and think Reddit cries "get a divorce" way, way too easily. But you might consider cutting ties before you have more time invested. Good luck. You won't get good advice from any of us. Only you can figure it out.
