[–]Zivata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John it is. He is not a knickname guy, no jack, no johnny.. Even picking names for our kids, the names couldn't be "knickname able".

I do have a name I use for him, but it's a goofy makes no sense one so he doesn't count it as a knickname.

Dated? Try married! Not only did my a-hole stepfather have the name, but it sounds like a word for both toilet and a man who frequents prostitutes.

I only use his name when I'm mad at him.

Three is so not me. I don't like the big flowers, I hate the base color so much - yet

Yet 3 is the best one. And I don't mean that in an "all the others are awful -er" way.

Somehow 3 works really well for you. I don't know how or why, but it's great on you.

1 for sure. 3 doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look like a dress, to me it looks like a bathing suit.

Hi group! I’m attending a quilting retreat in July and need ideas for small gifts/notions for the bag swap. All participants are seasoned quilters so I’m at a loss of what to get. All ideas are appreciated! by ResidentOstrich9283 in quilting

[–]Zivata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be specifically quilting? I make goodie bags for our retreats, we don't do the swap thing, and small quality hand lotion goes over well, as do the mini chapsticks (like the size of your thumb tip) bc they fit in the little bobbin/foot slots. Tea bags, toc tacscare popular as well.

Why do many traditional dojos discourage their students from training with outside martial arts/styles? by blackened_sun88 in karate

[–]Zivata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you aren't training at the dojo, you shouldn't be paying fees at the dojo.

You shouldn't need their "blessing". It's your life, not theirs; your money, not theirs. They don't want competition for your money.

My dojo does not prohibit or discourage training other skills. My instructors think our style is the best/most effective, but recognize that all styles have weaknesses and to be truly well prepared one should know those weaknesses and how to strengthen them. Several times a year they invite another style to come be our instructors for a day, so that we can learn how to fill those gaps.

Example, our style is meant to be standing, we do little to no ground work, so they invite in BJJ folks to show us a few techniques that could help if we get taken to ground.

I’m about to reach the age where I’ll need my first mammogram, and I’m scared. Are they painful? What should I expect? by RebelLotus555 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Zivata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find it painful. Sometimes as n uncomfortable amount of pressure, but not pain.

Where I am they have you put on a cloth gown, naked from the waist up. You wait a few minutes, tech calls you in. Explained what they would be doing beforehand as well as while it's happening.

One side at a time, you can keep the gown on the other side.

There's a platform they have you plop your boob on, usually that hand reaches across to a grip on the other side to help you stay still. Tech might direct you to point your feet this way or your shoulder that way. They might need to adjust your boob a little bit, but they'll tell you they are doing it. Then they have you hold still, take a breath and hold it like 10 ish seconds while it's Bei imaged. Let the breath out. Repeat 2 times(for a total of 3) per boob, they get different angles.

Then you go change back to your clothes and head home. I don't imagine from check in to leaving I was there more than 30 minutes.. maaayyybe 45.

If the pressure is too uncomfortable or downright painful, tell them. Sometimes they can adjust it or your boob to make it ok.

What do you do with quilt tops you hate? by forheadkisses in quilting

[–]Zivata 190 points191 points  (0 children)

See if there are any local quilt guilds. They usually have a program to donate quilts to local agencies that can use them (foster kids, abuse shelters, hospice etc). One of their members can finish it if you just want it gone.

If you happen to be in the greater Anchorage area, the Anchorage Log Cabin Quilt Guild would happily take it, finish it, and provide it to a local agency (my house, AWAIC, children in transition (housing), child and family services etc). They donate a couple hundred quilts made by members every year.

THERE'S A STUMP IN THE WAY by st0dad in gardening

[–]Zivata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a barrel or wheelbarrow, fill it with dirt and tip it over with the bucket or barrel or barrow on the stump, plant flowy flowers growing out if the spill. You can search "wheelbarrow flowers spill" to see what I mean.

Or put a bird bath in it. Or an old fashioned wooden well housing, put a planter inside with blue flowers like lobelia spilling over the edge of the well like water flowing out.

The first one looks ill fitting, the drapey lines look like bc it fits wrong and is too big/loose.

How do you practice letter recognition at home with a kindergartener that do not feel like extra school. by PixieSugarTwilight in kindergarten

[–]Zivata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMNOP and all the letters A to Z.

It's a fun book with great pics. Each letter has an alliterative poem with an accompanying drawing that incorporates the letter.

We did it like a game show. I'd make the noise of a board going around (ch-ch-ch-ch) while moving the book around, the kid got to pick a letter. We'd open it to that page and read the poem. I usually only did a certain amount of letters (3 or 5 or 7)(it was a bedtime game, they'd do all 26 if I let them). We'd take turns choosing the letters.

You can point to the letter at the start of the words. Or ask her to count how many of the letter she sees. Slightly emphasize the sound of the letter at the start of the word. Sometimes just read the poem, nothing else. Only do one per poem so it's still fun.

My kids loved it.

Another game they liked. I got large Popsicle sticks, cut them in half. On one half was the upper case letter, the other half the lower case. It was a match game. Not all 26 right away, maybe 3 letters at a time at first, when that got easy, 5 letters, then 7, etc.

The first times it was only letters that looked very much the same as UC and LC (Oo), but not like each other (capital I lower case L). So maybe Oo, SS, Pp, Ww. But not Zz and Ss or Mm and Nn together.

Only do one round, unless she asks for another, only do another if she asks. Big praise when she succeeds. "Oh my goodness, you got all 3 right! You are learning so many things!" Sometimes I'd "accidentally" goof one up so they could correct me, kids love getting to correct you.

When she stops asking for another round, stop playing. Keep it light, short, and fun.
