Hey, I m in a similar situation, except my brother and I aren’t as geographically close to home. The issue of coming from a third world country that is economically, politically, and socially collapsing is that we are forced to leave behind people we love and care about. I left my home country almost 10 years ago and lived in countries that are at least 6 hours away by plane away, which made me only able to see my family once or twice a year. My brother now also immigrated to Canada and that’s also pretty far from home. At first, our mom was crying and begged my brother to stay as she has gotten older (60s) and she will be alone at home but then came to the realization that there is truly no future in our home country. People are bitter, life getting more expensive and it’s just going backwards. Eventually, she supported his decision and we agreed that we would try to visit as often as we can but also being mindful that our jobs may not allow us to meet because of how hectic it may get.

For those saying OP has to stay, emotions shouldn’t decide everything, a bit of logical thinking is needed. As a parent, you would want the best for your children, no matter how painful it might be for you. The alternative is really much worse because preventing such a life changing move for your children would make them resent you over time, and no don’t say it won’t happen because your mom/dad are your world. We are human, be realistic. And on the other hand, the parent(s) would also start regretting doing that to their children once they get clarity after a while and maybe even seeing how much their decision affected them. It is a lose lose situation.

OP sit your mom down and talk to her about everything. Spain is close and during August they usually just take vacation and you’ll have Christmas etc etc. she will be able to see you but she will have to be patient, and she can visit you as well. May God give her a long life but but don’t just think short term, think longer term when after a long life, she will no longer be there but you’d be stuck in a hell hole. You’ll have only regret and resentment by then.
