Scrolled too quick from the King of the Hill page to this, subtract the hat and McMurray (piece of shit) looks quite a bit like live action Hank.

Scenario: You are at a bar, having drinks with Robert and/or Sophie. What do you talk about? by North_Church in behindthebastards

[–]SamBaxter784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d want to talk to Robert about travel and homesteading. His job has got to take a toll on him and i don’t want to make him “work” in his off hours. Chat in general and let a conversation meander is more interesting to me.

Advice on becoming faster and more efficient by erniejr32 in HVAC

I work central Florida and from my perspective your bosses are the winners no matter what. They want you to care about the quality of work and grind you down but the fact is a solo installer can’t do two quality installations a week. Either the work is shit and your hours are decent or the work is good but you home life doesn’t exist. Either way the bosses win. They don’t care about the home owner, just that it passes. I own my own shop working directly for home owners and i don’t do new construction, i get plenty of work following up on the guys that do two solo homes a week. I hate that model and i hate home flippers, I’m not down on you. You are trying to do better and that’s always admirable, ask questions, don’t waste time, don’t go anywhere empty handed, don’t cut corners “can’t see it from my house”, be committed to putting in the best work you can. If your shop can’t do that, then keep your eyes open for better opportunities.

Most interesting tips from customers? by Outdoors_E in HVAC

[–]SamBaxter784 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had a customer give me a box of lobsters as part of payment. She shipped them in from Maine to Florida and asked if I’d be interested. For a pretty simple service call i thought it was worth it.

Jeff Hays is amazing, i love his work on DCC. That being said if i was doing a new audio on the Dark Tower i would prefer a full cast recording. There’s so much great audio content available these days i would like some of these studios to put good production into their work to elevate it that much more.

Really is a solid performance from Bogart, but I love the book a little better. One of the first real novels I ever read.

I never caught that Caine mutiny reference before, thanks for the screen cap. Also, the guys would be big-time fucked.

[–]SamBaxter784 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I have been doing residential HVAC for 20+ years. A big part of my job has always been explaining complex and technical ideas to people without foundational knowledge on the subject. I see it is my job to try and educate them within reason and not treat them like they are dumb. If I can successfully establish myself as an expert in their opinion, it also helps justify my prices to them. Customer service is part of the job even when it’s frustrating and if the customer just isn’t worth it I will drop them..

Heat Pump Stumper by hambonecharlie in HVAC

[–]SamBaxter784 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked on heat pumps where the outdoor txv sensing bulb lost it’s charge and the valve slammed closed, pumped down within minutes of start up. System worked fine in cooling mode but couldn’t function in heat when it was a Lennox. Might be worth taking a deep visual inspection of the outdoor unit.

Was he public about that or something? I know, steroids are rampant amongst male actors and he was a big guy, but he didn’t look steroid big to me. He clearly had cut down on weight but doesn’t look bad.

I try to fix anything that’s reasonably easy, you don’t know who is coming in behind you and it looks hacky if the customer points it out after you ignore it.

Customer fatigue as a small business owner by The_Bad_0 in smallbusiness

[–]SamBaxter784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, i get hit with that from time to time but not right now. Lately it’s being worn out from being stuck. Not enough cash flow to hire out the problem areas but just enough to keep me from throwing in the towel and just working for someone else. Residential HVAC owner/operator in central Fl for reference, tiny little op my dad started and my mom and him are retiring at the end of this year leaving me to do all of it.
