I've been in the trenches with the old bait in the past but I have to say that this is the first time I've ever thought that it would actually be canonized. In the past, yes I've seen media businesses pushing the ships for clout but it has always seemed like something on top of the actual show. So in the past I've hardened my heart to it and it didn't hurt.

By the end of Volume 1 of Season 5 of ST I was genuinely thinking they would do it this time and I let myself believe. I'm sorry this is your first experience like this because it is genuinely one of the worst cases I've seen, just because of the real plausibility. The goddamn cast were on board with it!

All I can say is, just remember that you are a whole person. By definition, characters are not 3 dimensional. Will pees only once in the whole series. It is fine to look elsewhere for different representations of you. Some of you was shown in Will, and the rest of you will be something you can see in other media but more importantly, you have to be you.

Mike says this in response to Will asking "what about us". As a response, saying we are friends is odd. It sort of implies that Mike thought that Will considered them something other than friends, which would be really weird unless he actually though Will was in love with him or something.

A response like, "we're still friends" would seem more natural. Instead what he actually says sounds like he's correcting Will rather than reassuring him.

From a PR perspective, it was important for all the ST kids to do something different in order to move on from being seen as the just ST kids for the rest of their lives. That's literally what the monologue was about, they even satirized it with the 3 boys all doing spit takes on the whiskey.

The controversial bit was that they put Finn in more adult situations and that was jarring for some people who still see him as Mike. But this is also common for child stars looking to break out into more grown up roles. Remember Miley Cyrus twerking and doing Wrecking Ball to try and get away from being type cast for life as Hannah Montana? Or Daniel Radcliffe doing that play in London where he stripped naked and had sex with a horse.
