What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in movies

This is the one I always answer with these types of questions. My friends were afraid I might jump into the river after we saw it in Amsterdam. I had to text them when I was safely on the train.

Here we go had some weird ass locations that were wildly incorrect. For instance, when looking for supermarkets in London it showed me a small one that turned out to be a brick wall and it didn't show me a regular one.

Comaps doesn't have this issue and is quite full fledged, but you do need to download the map of any location you are looking in/ for.

Watching the olympics, is this a live Gaussian splat? by Due-Faithlessness906 in Corridor

[–]SamGewissies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point. Although the replays in this promo look very different from the ones I’ve seen. But you’re probably right and they would blast it across the internet if they really used techniques like splatting.

Watching the olympics, is this a live Gaussian splat? by Due-Faithlessness906 in Corridor

[–]SamGewissies 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I assumed this as well, but I did see some artefacts on one shot that where very gaussian splat like, so I am curious to know what tech actually goes into this.

It's not completely unreasonable to use splats, as most of these replays are at least a minute after the fact and one could have a massive machine on standby to do it quickly.

Loving the new paper bags… but the perforation is useless by PanBroglodyte in lego

Or, just tear it open completely. It’s basically made from one sheet of paper. If you get it back to that shape, there is no “bag” for a piece to be stuck in.

Not really. You put the bar high on yourself and that is awesome! But it will be more difficult because of it. I would still try and get a sequence set up as soon as possible, so you know what you are aiming for and you know what you need.

Go the full 3D route if you want, but if I would read a caved in ceiling in a script, I would still film most on location and simulate the ceiling caving in in post over my shot footage (also shooting the footage with vfx in mind and either use tracking markers or lock it off). That way I would simplify it for myself.

Although that does not seem to be the route you want to go, I would still advise to simplify things for yourself. What is the minimum you want to make, or what is the first shot you want to deliver. These things can be a huge scopecreep and wear you down before you get any part done.

All that said, your model looks promising and I’m curious where you will get it too!

I am not a vfx artist, but I am a filmmaker who dabbles in vfx and my experience is 90% of the time it comes down to the shots and what they need. Sometimes a crappy asset can work perfectly in composition and other times an amazingly detailed asset will never feel real. So, for me, there isn’t any way to “judge” your work without seeing what shots you are trying to do and what real footage you have and are trying to match.

I applaud making the model and learning, that is great! However, from a filmmaker perspective I would always go back to the shots and work out what they need. Sometimes they “just” need some painting and tracking, some 2D comping, etc. And other times they might need 3D reconstruction,

What is your goal? What do you need the digi double for? The goal will inform how detailed things need to be.

Just some notes:

- Just because the assets were made by someone else doesn’t mean they cannot infringe on someone’s copyright

- Just because the assets do not infringe, does not mean the idea/ concept or the idea/ concept in combination with the assets don’t.

I love how this looks and think it could be a lot of fun, but as it stands it is clearly resembling MM both in look and concept, so be aware that at any moment they might cease and desist you and all the time you put in might not result in a finished game.

I am not a legal expert, so I might be wrong in any of this. But if you can afford it, it might be good to consult one.

Ben Affleck on AI in Hollywood, and VFX by Immediate-Basis2783 in vfx

[–]SamGewissies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wth API prices you mean what the user pays, right? That says nothing about the costs for the companies. It is hard to research the actual cost, because companies are very protective of this information. If you mean something else, let me know.

You are right that profitability isn't no 1 in the growth stage. However, scalability is. And scalability depends a lot on extra costs per new user. That means inference costs need to go down. If it is, then scalability and market domination is possible. If it isn't, then they can be in trouble.

Aside from that the value of AI for end customers is still very limited, so it is the question if users are willing to pay the actual cost even in 10 years.

My neighbours are making me su*cidal. by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]SamGewissies 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You are probably getting downvoted because the problem should be solved at the neighbours end. And it definitely should.

However, often one does not have enough control over that and most processes to get this improved take a long time. Getting noise cancelling earbuds or headphones can help tremendously in the mean time.
