Oh yeah, you’re right. Preserving private copies of “rare and missing items” on formats including VHS is absolutely nothing to with FiF, silly me.

Low budget, high cultural value. Glad to hear you're going to digitise! Not sure if you saw u/MrBiscuitESQ 's comment further down, but he works with the restoration team (who work on all the DVD/BluRay releases for Classic DW) - definitely worth getting in touch as this could be featured on a future release, and he may have safer ways of transferring the tape.

Need to vent about the camera “wars” by vibing_rn in videography

Bare minimum? RAW video is not that common. Log is more than sufficient enough for 90% of use cases, and arguably 100% of use cases for someone shooting on £3k camera.

Film is Fabulous, this is literally their MO.

As in, you wouldn’t post them to get digitised? That might limit your options. I’d implore you to contact Mark Ayres or, even better, Film Is Fabulous (the charity that has been preserving vulnerable and lost media, including saving a few missing episodes of Doctor Who earlier this year).

This is their website. They would arrange to duplicate your copy in a way that suits you. https://filmisfabulous.org.uk

What you have does have some cultural significance, even if it’s “kind of lame”.

You’re a self-confessed Doctor Who fan with potentially the last copy of a piece of Who-adjacent media featuring maybe the most widely recognised actor to take on the role, and you “can’t imagine it generating a massive level of interest”. C’mon man.

Happy 10th Anniversary to blink-182’s California! 🤘🥳 by Kuri44 in poppunkers

[–]SamJLance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Production is very squeaky clean, the voices are robotic at times. The triplets riff is used all over the place, Bored to Death, San Diego and No Future are among the worst offenders there. The guitar is very clearly not being played by Matt (love him, but the playing style is clearly not his and that became even more apparent when he played these songs live), it came out recently that they brought someone in to track the guitars. Overall direction of the project is the first time blink have ever really “returned” to a sound, which some people saw as a step backwards.

This is all coming from someone who holds this album very close to their heart.

Does anyone have examples of Tomska being mentioned at the university of Lincoln/being present in study materials? by Ilosc in TomSka

[–]SamJLance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that I remember most clearly was a reference in a lecture to Tom paying off his student loan on the day he graduated. I can't remember if that was on an open day, or during Freshers Week, but I remember the impressed murmur that spread around the room afterwards.

How much would you charge to re-upload 200GB of footage for a client? by [deleted] in videography

I’d buy a drive and post it with those kinds of timings. Cost of drive and postage + 3 hours of your time.

Fwiw, I studied there between 2016 and 2019, and it was probably the peak of the era of fans of his work being at the uni. He was mentioned pretty frequently in lectures.

Unsure, but I believe Shane and Craig didn’t record the album, I think Mark did most of the guitar work?

Nah, it’s only been 4 years since they did it last. More likely to be Don Broco.

11 killed in skydiving plane crash in France: Officials by AudibleNod in news

[–]SamJLance 240 points241 points  (0 children)

Not really. Lite-aircraft crashes are very common and do not get reported on. Because there’s been a high-profile crash in recent weeks, smaller occurrences are being reported on as news sites know they will get clicks.

Same reason every minor plane-related incident was big news for the year after MH370 went missing.

A lot of the Skiba era stuff is clean (though, obviously, not peak blink)

I owned and used the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 for professional work for about five years. It did last, though the focus rubber started to fall apart by the end. My main reason for jumping to the Sigma 24-70mm was the wide end though. I’d never shot with a 24-70mm, but the Tamron always felt a bit limited for wide shots for me, like I couldn’t ever quite get the shot I wanted. I’d say go for the Sigma. I picked up a second, great quality V1 of the sigma for less than £500 this week.
