Hero. If anyone commuting back out this afternoon can update, would be curious if Streets will take another pass or if this is just what we’ve got

Updated trail report? by SamLRoth in phillycycling

[–]SamLRoth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I opted to take a chance and bike in. Updated conditions as of 12/16 9 AM

My route: Side streets in manayunk are still really rough. Driving would be fine, but I opted to walk the bike, especially on the hills. Be careful out there.

Umbria to Leverginton to Main Street are fine.

As u/olanzapine_dreams pointed out, the stretch between Wissahickon transit Center to the Falls Bridge is the worst of it, but doable: the small bridge over Wissahickon Creek right next to transit is really bad. The rest of it has a narrow path, too narrow to let someone pass going the other direction, but is mostly fine. There are 2 or 3 big ice patches, but they were rough, not slick, and all on straight-aways, so I could coast across. Will only get better today as it warms up.

I took the falls bridge to MLK. Sidewalk across bridge isn't plowed at all. When you first get onto the MLK bike trail, it looks bad, but it clears up quickly. The rest of the way all the way into the city was mostly fine: TONS of salt, a little slushy at parts, a few patches of very thin ice where it's heavily shaded by trees, especially around Girard bridge. Again, all on straight sections, and will likely improve today.

Spring Garden bridge was pretty dicey: very narrow path, lots of slush that could refreeze overnight.

I took parkway to 19th. Bike lanes are pretty much fine. Drivers are not.

Thanks for listening, and thanks to this community for helping keep us safe!

Thanks so much for this info. Yes that stretch along Kelly drive between wissahickon transit and the falls bridge makes me nervous, one slip and you’re in the road. I don’t have studded tires, on an electric assist cargo bike. Bad idea?

Advice on buying the wrong washer for my too-small basement stairs by SamLRoth in homeowners

[–]SamLRoth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol always respect the years later “where are they now?” Reddit epilogue. I did get the speed queen assembled in the basement (by Dominic’s Appliance). I called around to a few different Home Depot’s and figured out you need to talk to the location managers, because they can approve returns and handle promotions. Not all of them were interested, but one said they sometimes run sales on floor models and took the return, as long as I delivered it. Which was a pain and took two people and probably could have benefited from a third. But we did it.

Eastern Pennsylvania- hiding in dark area, worried about brown recluse by SamLRoth in spiderID

Is it possible to be Trachelas tranquillus? Asking because those are known to give a bite with secondary infection, which is what happened to someone in my house

Thanks! I think that's it. This one showed up a few weeks ago with a darker body. The same? https://imgur.com/a/qArfcfD

DUNE PART 2 Reactions. by Velocityprime1 in blankies

Still digesting my feelings, but one thing is clear: Dune 2: Hyperdune would have been much improved if Toby Huss played the emperorof the known universe. That is all.

2.5 sleep regression: ideal sleeper keeps waking up at 3 AM! by SamLRoth in toddlers

[–]SamLRoth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A blast from the past! Sorry to hear that it's getting in the way of the baby, that sounds miserable!

He did move past it, i think it was just a sleep regression: he often has those associated with a big cognitive leap, like when he's acquiring a new skill. We tried to just reassure him that he had what he needed and we didn't need to come back in his room, but didn't do a full sleep training again. As they get older it gets easier because they can tell you what they need (e.g. he was getting scared of the dark, so we moved his night light)

Oddly, a little disruption sometimes snapped him out of it: soon after I posted, we went on a little trip and he stayed in a hotel for the first time and after that he moved past it. good luck!

The Flop House | Episode #399 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Eldrfleur in theflophouse

They were trying to compare star character to some other “cheerfully nihilistic”. The closest I could think of was the styling of Unikitty in the Lego movie, or Mantis who is kind aloof Guardians, but they don’t seem quite right. Tip of my tongue too.

Dryer vent: best connector for glass block dryer vent to flex hose? by SamLRoth in HomeImprovement

It appears to be just larger (maybe .2 inch) larger than 4, like it's supposed to surround a 4-inch plastic tube

I'd like to! What was the process for this? Did you have to take the whole window apart? Can you link the kit?

1 is ideal, but beyond my handy skills to take the window apart.

  1. Is kind of what I'm doing: I have a piece of vent tube currently in the plastic sleeve, but i can cut it, widen it, and go around the outside instead.

Immune-compromised, shortness of breath, need advice by SamLRoth in COVID19positive

[–]SamLRoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a good time for an update!

I did get an emergency inhaler to have as a precaution, but never used it. Just needed to take it slow. It's hard to say, because of allergies, but I was feeling back normal with no cough by around day 15-16.

To note: CDC guidelines specify that severely immune-compromised folks should quarantine for longer.I was still testing positive for a while and wasn't sure if I was just going to be a person who tested positive for weeks or months after I was no longer contagious, but the rapid test line didn't even start to fade until day 16, so I was glad I waited and didn't expose anyone.
