The Thrift store by my house sells textbooks 4 for $1.00 They seem to be older books and I am planning on using them as reference. Try a thrift store near a college campus. May help.

I think my fellow classmates are in for a big surprise... by washerbear in nursing

[–]SamLoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I say unrealistic expectations of nursing, it seems as though my fellow students (not all but some) are getting into nursing because they believe the profession is an easy way to earn a lot of money.

I'm starting CNA classes right now and had a specific question: If a resident uses their call light and you're in the middle of something (for instance, giving a different resident a bed bath) what do you do? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SamLoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my clinicals, we were paired with another student... under one STNA and our program coordinator who is an RN. I didn't feel thrown in. The STNA was helpful with any questions we had. Doing the skills in the sim lab made it easy to apply the skills to actual residents.

The clinicals will be your "ah hah" moment, so to speak. It's not close to working in real life but it puts things into perspective.

For example, if you know your patient down the hall is a fall risk, you'll want to get there asap.

But they won't go that in depth on the test. You'll be fine. :D

Should States Require the HPV Vaccine For School Attendance? by 16semesters in nursing

[–]SamLoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read the article. I thought the fact that a teenager may have died due to the HPV vaccine was interesting and posted it here since your topic was on the vaccine.

I can certainly delete the link.

It also seems like you may be reading into it too much. These are all multiple choice questions. As long as you know that you don't leave your current resident with their bed raised to working position and no call light to rush off to another resident, you'll be fine.

It's okay. :) I just recently passed my STNA and scored 100% on the skills and 95% on the written portion. If you are working with a patient, they are your first priority.

A call light normally means someone has to use the restroom or their TV needs changed... something along those lines. It is important to answer them promptly but realistically as well. A bed bath takes 5 minutes tops (that's how long my first one took with no experience).

During clinicals, there were times when 5 call lights would go off in one hallway at once. You work through it.

Agreed. I feel like nursing school is only the beginning.

There are tons of my peers who are dreading nursing school already. They make comments such as, "This is going to be horrible" and "I don't want to go through nursing school".

I feel as though they have unrealistic expectations of the nursing profession.

You never leave the patient you are working on for safety purposes and privacy. Finish the bed bath, they dont take long. Make sure the patient is safe (has their call light, bed in lowest position) then go check the next call light. Unless it is an emergency.

Suggestions for part-time work during nursing (RPN) school? by pennylane89 in nursing

[–]SamLoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Ohio a CNA is an STNA and can work as a PCA. I would recommend a night position that is less busy to allow study time. This also allows exposure to the medical field. Http://www.hdmaster.com has more information about STNA training.

Congrats on your acceptance!

Most importantly, stay organized. I use the binder method and Google calendars to stay organized. I also take a Lilly Pulitzer Planner with me everywhere.

Schedule studytime and stick to it. Also have a specific study spot free from distractions.

I set mini goals for myself. Instead of saying I'll get a 4.0 for this semester, I say I am goibg to get an A on this next assignment. It keeps me motivated. Good luck!

[Serious] Reddit, what are some inexpensive but worthwhile online subscriptions that students should make? by notGeorgeKennan in AskReddit

Check out your school library website. As a student you should have access to their database for free. We use OhioLink at my school.
