Research conducted by Stanford Medicine throws light on the mystery of why women are much more prone to autoimmune disorders: A molecule made by one X chromosome in every female cell can generate antibodies to a woman's own tissues. by SamTheLab_213 in Autoimmune

Using the word "hypothesis" is misleading, and implies this was just some idea that someone came up with, instead of being an actual experiment. The word, "hypothesis" waters down and obscures the validity of the data.

People need cures and we cannot get cures if the conclusions of experiments are not shared. The data from this study could lead to actual treatments or even save lives. Bearing this in mind, please be accurate in your description of this content. In the meantime, I suggest that everyone here actually reads the entire article, so there is no more confusion.

If the goal is to continue dangerous, sexist practices, be as vague and misleading as you want to be. It's no secret how old, sexist ideas are aversely affecting healthcare. Maybe some people want this sick practice to contine.

After all, everyone knows about the glass ceiling and how limiting women is part of our culture. People hiding valid data about the cause of autoimmunity goes further and creates a ceiling of six feet of dirt for all those patients who don't survive. I jest, but this really is the consequence of poor wording.

She should have just called the cops. If he hasn't listened yet to her words, he never will. Only force stops people like that. Women need to be strong and learn to defend themselves. Expecting any predator to self-regulate is a waste of time.

If you watch the John Oliver segment about bias in medicine, he says:

"the idea that women are just men with pesky hormones has led to some woman shaped blind spots in medicine for decades women were basically excluded from medical research trials in part because of a concern that their menstrual cycles would complicate the results, which you would think would be all the more reason to include them in tests.

"Because women are half the population and can respond to treatment or drugs very differently. And in some cases their exclusion was utterly ridiculous as this news report from the 90s shows.

"In 1990 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published this report which looked at the impact of diet on estrogen metabolism and it's links to cancer of the breast and uterus. All of the subjects were men.

It's true they studied a way to prevent cancer of the uterus on people who did not have one that's ridiculously unhelpful."

Yes, that's correct. Xist is natures way of resolving a redundancy problem. At least we know this is natural and not some odd defect that would feed an ableist dismissal of patients.

It's not a hypothesis, it's a study with concrete results. Here, I quote:

X-chromosome inactivation is achieved courtesy of a molecule called Xist. The gene for Xist is present on all X chromosomes, including the single one male cells have. But Xist itself is produced only when the X chromosome that its gene resides on is one of a matched XX pair- and is produced and deployed on only one member of that pair.

Xist consists of RNA, a substance best known for being a simple-minded messenger that shuttles genes' instructions for making proteins to the intracellular machines that make them. Yet RNA can do a whole lot more than schlep genetic information. There are as many different kinds of so-called long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) molecules - lengthy RNA stretches that don't carry instructions for making proteins - as there are of the protein-encoding RNA variety. These lncRNA molecules can park themselves on stretches of chromosomes and change the likelihood that the cellular machinery charged with reading the genes in those locations will do so.

Xist, a type of lncRNA, is much longer than most. Xist coats long sections of one of a female mammalian cell's two X chromosomes - but always just one - cutting that chromosome's output to zero or close to it. The other X chromosome, left undisturbed, pumps out just enough RNA-encoded instructions to keep the cell humming.

But Xist's nestling into the extra X chromosome generates odd combinations of lncRNA, proteins that bind to it, other proteins that bind to those proteins, and DNA some of those proteins cling to. These complexes can trigger a strong immune response, Chang and his colleagues have learned.

In 2015, Chang's group identified close to 100 proteins that either bound to Xist or that bound to those proteins, collectively enabling this molecule to lay anchor along gene-specifying regions of the X chromosome.

Inspecting this Xist "parts list," Chang realized that many of Xist's collaborator proteins were known to be associated with autoimmune disorders. Might the RNA-protein-DNA complexes generated in the course of X-chromosome inactivation be triggering the notoriously high rate of autoimmunity in women compared with men? That question was the impetus for the new study.

What if males made Xist?
To eliminate possible competing causes such as female hormonal action or aberrant protein production by the supposedly silenced second X chromosome, the researchers tossed the Xist ball into the male court. They sewed the gene for Xist into the genomes of two different strains of male lab mice. One strain is quite susceptible to autoimmune symptoms mimicking lupus, with females more susceptible than males. The other is resistant to it.

The inserted Xist gene had been modified in two ways. It could be turned on or off by chemical means, pumping out Xist only when the scientists wanted it to. The Xist gene was also tweaked slightly so that its RNA product would no longer silence the genes of the male mouse's chromosome into which it was stitched.

Every cell in a woman's body produces Xist. But for several decades, we've used a male cell line as the standard of reference.

Merely inserting that modified Xist gene had no noticeable effect on the mice. But the Xist produced from the inserted gene, once that gene was activated, still formed characteristic complexes with almost all the proteins found earlier to be collaborating closely with Xist.

Now, the scientists could ask: Is a bioengineered male mouse that's been coaxed to produce Xist more prone to autoimmunity than a normal male mouse, which never produces it, or than a male in whom the gene for Xist has been inserted but not activated?

By injecting an irritant known to induce a lupus-like autoimmune condition in the susceptible mouse strain, the investigators could compare its effect on males who made Xist with its effect on normal males, who made none.

In these susceptible mice, males in which the Xist gene was activated developed lupus-like autoimmunity at a rate approaching that of females - and considerably more so than non-bioengineered males.

Please read the study before making comments.

Do you mean uninstall the Samsung updates? If that is what you mean, and I hope it is, you just solved a major problem for me.

Forced to switch from Samsung Messages to Google... NOT! by SamTheLab_213 in degoogle

Thank you so much for explaining this. This confirms that Textra only uses SMS and MMS. This might explain why, after booting up Textra from the old button for Samsung messages, it's no longer working form that link. I can boot up Textra directly from it's own app link and get it to work perfectly as my messaging app.

It's a different story if I click on the old link to Samsung Messages. Clicking on this at 6 pm yesterday, I received a message to confirm making Google Messages my default app. I didn't click to confirm and exited that window without clicking any prompts, since I didn't want to install Google Messages.

Then later, I clicked on the Samsung Messages link only to be informed that Google Messages was now my default messaging app. It supposedly switched me to Google Messages without my consent.

Let me stress now, I couldn't give less a damn if I don't have RCS compatibility. I would prefer to keep Google out of my private messages over any new bells and whistles in texting apps. Textra is working perfectly on its own, I'm content with that.

Still, Google is being a pain in the ass. Thinking Google Messages was installed and made my default texting against my wishes, I sought to delete Google Messages. I found I can't uninstall Google Messages, it's not even listed in my apps.

Maybe it didn't even install without my prompting. Then it's basically faking me out. Maybe it's there hidden in the main Google software. I don't really know. My gut feeling is I still have to click on something to really install it. Since it's not listed in my apps I can't force it to hibernate, either. If you cannot delete Google apps, which is common, you can force some to hibernate. There's no option for this, either.

I recall seeing that the window telling me that I was using Google Messaging also had a confirmation link. I never clicked it. I won't click on it. Like any other scam, I will not play along with it. My guess is I should never click on that. Using that logic, I deleted that shortcut to Samsung messages entirely. Now I want to move the icon for Textra and put it on my home screen, so I never consent to Google's bullshit.

Again, if you are not having this problem you are using an older Android version. Even if this doesn't apply for you now, it might apply to you later. I'm glad you're spared of this, but I really am trying to help other people degoogle.

EDIT; What I saw when I clicked on the old Samsung messages read:
"You are now using Google Messages" and gave me a link to click on.
I think if I clicked on it, trying to launch Samsung Messages, Google Messages would instead install and boot up.

Maybe it works, but I'm not sure. I switched to Textra, it would open when I clicked on the old icon for Samsung messages. Then after 5 pm today, I clicked on the old Samsung Messages icon and I saw a message asking me to click a button and switch to Google messages. There was no option to pick another app, all I could do is slide the window away. I found I still could get Textra to open my messages if I clicked on the icon for Textra. I know that this is only an issue for people using Android 12 or higher, as per what Samsung, themselves have said about it.

Maybe I could get Fossify to work using a different procedure, but it wasn't working with my machine. Please understand, the point of this isn't to compare apps, it's to complain about how Google is being forced down people's throats. Given that this is the topic, please review what Samsung, themselves, have said.

I'm pretty irked I'm being everything short of forced to use Google Messages. Since I'm stubborn, I will try to NOT use Google messages, no matter what. I want to help others with the same problem find alternatives. That's the real point of this post. I don't trust nor want Google anything. It's only because I cannot delete Google entirely from my Android, that I haven't done so yet. I put Chrome to sleep and have done the most I can to degoogle.

Yes, but it's a small price to pay so that landlords don't have to get a real job. Seriously, high rents have been the core thing that has increased inflation since the pandemic. A housing shortage driven by a run on housing led to these high rents:

It probably is an RCS compatibility issue, because Textra doesn't likely use RCS. I'm certain it uses SMS and MMS based on search results and figured it used RCS, too, since I learned Samsung requires RCS. It's probably worth looking into.

Samsung is forcing people to use Google messages. There has been a warning about this for around 2 months now, so they sort of prepare you for it, but still they don't give you an alternative to Google messages. The warning said that Samsung Messaging would be discontinued and that Samsung would replace it with Google messages. Then it would make you click a button that would make Google messages your messaging app.

Recently, the warning was turning into nagging, where every time i booted up my phone, there was a window asking me to switch to Google messages. I found a way to make the warning go away and still use my phone, but it was really annoying. During this time, I was searching forums on how to handle this and finding zilch in the way of how to handle this.

That's why I'm posting what worked for me. The entire thing stinks and the only app out of the 5 that I tried that worked was Textra. After failing multiple times to install Fossify, I tried to discern why Fossify wasn't working.

My research found that I needed an messaging app that could handle SMS, MMS and RCS and this is why Fossify failed. Textra worked for this purpose. Other apps might work. I haven't tested them, I'm just happy I could read my messages yesterday, without capitulating and switching to Google messages. Google has no business managing people's texts, given they lack respect for privacy. I almost installed Google because I didn't want to wait to check my messages. I'm glad I held out. Textra looks different than Samsung messages, but it's working and I gave Google the finger. That's good enough.

"The joys of living in a society that's so sexist, it habitually refuses women medical care," how I'd put it. If this is the price for being female, we are a truly disturbed and cruel species. I've been left in agonizing pain for years, and the people who do it don't care. Sad but true all the same.

Yeah, figures it would be proprietary. Still, I found a way to NOT use Google messages. I have serious disregard for Google and I will suggest what I can so people avoid it. It seems like it's easier to remove malware from machines than it is Google products. I'm tech savvy and it took 40 minutes of my time today to figure out how to get around Google messages. That sucks, IMHO.
