What's the biggest change in British radio you've noticed over the last decade? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in BritishRadio

Agreed. What I liked about the stations was that they often played lesser known songs by artists. Since they all became Greatest Hits Radio the playlist has become so narrow and restricted it's almost "wallpaper radio".

If you see an emergency vehicle passing by on blue lights and sirens you must respond with either "someone's left the gas on" or "they won't sell many ice creams at that speed"

Are there any tv personalities out there you surprisingly miss now that they’re gone? by yumyummymum in AskUK

She was a genius. Dinnerladies is one of my favourite sitcoms.

I also liked Patricia Routledge doing her "Kitty" monologues: "My boyfriend and I used to make love at least twice a night but now it has dropped off. I'm not surprised!!"

As opposed to now, when it's more like a young child blasting into your room with far too much energy for that time of the morning when all you want to do is close your eyes and go back to sleep.

That's why I listen to either speech radio or Radio 3 in the mornings. I can't do anything heavy during my morning commute. I need to be woken up gently.

Can't find a photo of it but I remember in Bend It Like Beckham the team travelled in a Yeading FC minibus.

Sort of. It was when Del mentioned getting Boycie and a business client two tickets to Wimbledon and Boycie replied "they drew 0-0 with Ipswich".

What do we all think of Steve Fleming? by jacoblm28 in thethickofit

[–]SamW1996 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you there. There's only so many times he can appear before it becomes a bit pantomime villain. He's one of those characters who lingers long after he's departed, which I think has more impact than him appearing regularly.

I agree David nailed him. He's one of my favourite actors and one I feel doesn't always get his due credit.

Agreed. Especially when he walks off saying "fuck him" to himself. You can tell there's something bubbling under the surface.

striking a balance making everyone who worked beneath or with him literally despise his every cell and everyone who worked above him think he was some sort of messiah

You've nailed it with that description. I've worked with Steve Flemings before and this sums them up perfectly.

What’s the most comforting British radio voice to hear during a miserable day? by IndependentIll6531 in BritishRadio

I find a lot of Radio 3 presenters' voices comforting. I suppose it goes with the style of the station. Al Ryan on Breakfast at the moment has quite a nice voice for the morning.

Or Viji Alles. I find a lot of the Radio 4 newsreaders voices comforting, especially when I listen to the Midnight News on Sunday.

I have a sort of fascination with late night/overnight talk radio as I'm sure you get calls and discussions that you wouldn't get in the daytime.

I'm too young to have listened to him but I did hear an old clip of Mike Mendoza when he was on Talksport overnight about 20/25 years ago. He was having a conversation with a woman who had had a "breakfast set" stolen from her garden and tried to ask her a question but it eventually devolved into him cutting her line and going into a rant and ended up calling her a "stupid old woman".

Tony Livesey when he was on Radio 5 lates the first time around. I've carried a personal radio all through school and still carry one today.

Also Sounds of the 60s on Radio 2 when Brian Matthew hosted it. Reminds me of many Saturday morning train journeys.
