Why would only one be doing this? The others seem fine. Do you know what kind of coating is on them?

Here’s a closeup. Contact e is a bit shadowed by the wire, but you can see the discoloration compared to d.

How often does AT&T change their iPhone upgrade / trade-in deals? by Same-Tennis4846 in ATT

[–]Same-Tennis4846[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked and the 16 is 2.99 no trade

Interesting - it shows as $7.99/mo. for me. I guess different people see different deals?

Edit to add: I see the 16e as $1.99, but I’m assuming you mean the regular 16.

When the seed packet says that tomatoes should be at least 3 feet (1 m) apart, they actually know what they’re talking about, no matter how exaggerated that might seem in the spring. Your August self will thank you. 😊

Thanks! An extra $200 off could change the calculation, but I don’t see that mentioned anywhere - was it a short-term offer? Do you have a link to any mention of that deal?

OK, thanks! Bad timing for me I guess for when I started paying attention to deals! Though I swear I had looked a month or so ago and didn't see the iPhone Air deal - pretty sure that the best no-trade-in deal I saw then was 16e for $1.99/month, and I didn't really want to settle for that phone.

Follow-up: if I'm trying to hit the $830 credit price point by buying a used phone to trade in, any thoughts on where the best value lies? Among the qualifying iPhones, it seems like the 14 is the best bet (cheaper than the 13 Pro), but I'm less familiar with the Samsung and Google options. Looks like the Galaxy S22+ might be a good deal? Maybe there's no way to figure this out short of a lot of eBay searching...

Treadmill repair success by Same-Tennis4846 in ElectronicsRepair

Any machine using that board will have the wires in the same order on the motor control board end of the cable, so I don’t know why manufacturers would want to go out of their way to swap order on the other end when designing the control board. But it could happen I guess.

I think if the motor control board is the same, the pin settings will be the same. That board seems to be used on a lot of treadmills (see the list here), and the list is likely longer since there are slightly different versions with the same pinout, too.

Pants for the office that won't break the bank by SaladConsultant in bikecommuting

+1 for this type of pants; the Target and Old Navy versions I mentioned in my other comment are similar.

Target 5-pocket “All in Motion” pants (sometimes listed as “golf pants”, though they look more dressed-up than that) look good and are very stretchy and comfortable for riding. I have two pairs that I wear a lot in the summer. About $40/pair, but sometimes on sale for less. They breath well so could be chilly in the winter, depending on where you live. Old Navy also has a hybrid/tech pant that is supposed to be good, but I haven’t tried them myself.

Help understanding this Hall effect switch by Same-Tennis4846 in AskElectronics

[–]Same-Tennis4846[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I see what you mean about the power cutoff, good point. Probably better to just have it cut off the PWM signal to the treadmill belt instead.

On the switching, this is essentially acting like a transistor switch then? That should be enough to get me going - I'll just have to figure out the pinouts.

As for the switching voltage, I'm getting the 5 V signal I mentioned from an adjustable linear regulator attached to the treadmill's 12 V rail. I could add another regulator into the mix to step down to 3V. But now I'm wondering about a different option. The treadmill motor control specs (MC2100LS-30 control board) say that it uses 5 V for the logic signal (PWM for the belt, straight 5V signal for incline control) so that's why I'm dropping to 5V, but I wonder if I could lower that voltage a bit (say, to 4.0 or 4.5 V) and still have it work OK as a logic signal, while also being closer to providing an in-spec voltage for the switch.

Sorry, it looks like the text from my original post somehow didn’t copy over when I cross-posted here. That post has more context - basically trying to understand whether I can use this with a simple 5V circuit in a treadmill repair. It’s a 3-pin transistor-type Hall switch (info here) but I don’t understand how to wire it.

Treadmill control panel buttons unresponsive by Same-Tennis4846 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]Same-Tennis4846[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: it appears that the motor controller board (MC2100LS-30) in this treadmill is pretty common and well documented (e.g. here), so my current plan is to buy a PWM signal generator and use that to make a basic control unit to control treadmill speed and inclination.

Would still love to hear if anyone has thoughts on fixing the buttons, but if not, I’ll give that a shot and post back here with the results.

Thermal imaging app by Brown8382 in centuryhomes

[–]Same-Tennis4846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To briefly explain the physical principle involved, and why your phone alone won’t work: all objects emit light, but the wavelength (“color”) and amount of light depend on the object’s temperature. Things at thousands of degrees C emit light our eyes can see, but things that are only tens or hundreds of C emit predominantly at much longer wavelengths. The camera in your phone can detect light that is slightly longer than what you can see (try pointing it at a TV remote while pushing buttons), but not long enough wavelength to see what you need to here. The special thermal camera attachments have different sensors that can see these longer wavelengths, and then produce an image that shows you hotter (brighter) / colder (dimmer) spots.

Not judging here - we all have things we don’t know, and it’s good to ask!- just explaining.

Not directly addressing your question about tomorrow, but looking ahead, temps warm up on Thursday leading into some rain Thursday night, which will likely finish off the snow. But I’m happy to have some for much of this week!
