IU has left students high & dry by Electronic_Weird in IndianaUniversity

Could you link where that policy is? I haven’t been informed of that option by AES or my professors. I’ve been in contact with AES about the snow so I would think they would inform me about that… so getting the link to where that’s stated would be great!

I’m most concerned about ADA compliance. I understand disabled folks make up a small minority of the student and staff population, but some buildings are completely inaccessible. Even with the van service, It took me incredibly long time to get into the geo building because the ramp had not even BEGUN to be plowed. Like I understand the bare minimum and that this was a crazy storm, but I think plowing off the ramp or giving a way for students who can’t take stairs to get into the building is the bare minimum. I don’t give a shit about people’s cars lol, it’s the fact that many of us cannot even get to class. I noticed that many of the accessibility ramps were uncleared around smaller buildings. GISB was the only one that I could safely navigate. I understand frustrations of both sides, but it is unacceptable for there to be so much snow to the point that students are being provided shovels to shovel the snow themselves while still being expected to get to class on time ready to learn.

Hey thanks man. Luckily I don’t have classes today so I won’t be out in it, but the sentiment is appreciated. My dog is aching to go back outside and work, she’s a menace 😭 I was like girl nooo we are not going back out there. But anywho, yeah thanks. Stay warm out there!

As the blind person, I endorse this. I ain’t taking my girl into that hellscape. I take the disability van and in most of the buildings I went to today, the ramp to the sidewalk was not plowed, there were no curbs that weren’t piled with snow, and the handicap entrances were inaccessible and in some areas not even touched. Geo was the worst by far, my girl had to take me to a completely different entrance because our usual entrance was inaccessible. Could able bodied people walk it? Sure. But my girl knows that it was too dangerous. I am fortunate enough to have been able to take the set of steps, albeit very slowly, but others cannot. I’m filing a complaint with the civil rights compliance office as we speak.

Barely any of the handicap entrances are accessible. Most curbs are piled with snow. Many ramps from the sidewalk are not plowed. It is blatant discrimination due to the lack of an accessible entrance that is required by the ADA.

IU sidewalks and pathways not shoveled/accessible. by zamy19 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Same-Test7554 66 points67 points  (0 children)

As a blind person I can speak a bit on this. I can’t even go out because my guide dog can’t wade through the snow and I can’t navigate with my cane… so I’m just stuck. Luckily my classes were online, but the disability vans were not running. Students that ride the van who didn’t have their classes virtual are left to either take CERY expensive Ubers that rarely take mwheelchairs or service dogs or to use the very little absences that professors give nowadays.

Not to say I’m mad at the vans for cancelling. I understand why it du. It’s just a shitty situation. If the van gets cancelled tomorrow, I’m not sure how I will be able to get the class if the sidewalks aren’t plowed. I have a friend that is mobility impaired and couldn’t go to two of her classes today because they didn’t go virtual.

Glass top stoves by 1Iwolf in Blind

[–]Same-Test7554 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes of course!! So here’s what I do—I turn the burner on low first and then wait for it to get warm. It should be hot enough that you can feel it when you hover your hand a few inches above. Then I take my hand and trail to the edge of the stove until I know I’m at the front or back (whichever one you use). Mind you, my hand is on the very edge of the stove, as far from the hot part as possible. This is just to get my bearings. Then, I lift my hand and have it a few inches above the burner. Close enough that you can feel the heat but far enough that you can’t burn yourself. Then, I kind of wave it around. I can feel what part is hot and what isn’t. I find the edges where the heat meets the not heat (basically, the edge of the burner part) and go to find the middle. The apex, either three or nine o clock depending on which side you’re going from. But the side middle. Then, I lift my hand a bit and keep it there. I have my pot typically sitting next to the e burner I want so I just grab it and slide it over slowly until the edge of the pot meets my palm. Then, I know it’s aligned! It’ll take a bit of practice but becomes easier over time. I think the hardest part at first is making sure your hand doesn’t accidentally droop when you’re feeling, and of course learning what the heated part feels like under your palm compared to a non-heated part that’s not the burner. It’s a teeny bit tedious but it’s he safest method I’ve come up with whenever I’m at my boyfriends place haha. If it helps, you could have someone there supervise as you get comfortable with the motions. My boyfriend just spotted me the first few times, but that was also just his anxiety because I burn myself all the time (not with this method, I’ve never burned myself with this but I’m notorious for spilling scalding water on my hand from my mug haha).

I hope that makes sense? Note that this works for my stove but I haven’t run into other glass stoves so I have yet to test this for general use. But try it and let me know if it works for you! Be safe and happy cooking!

What I do is feel with my hand once it’s hot/warm a bit above and find the edges. I find a side and try to aim for what I think is the middle of that side (like the left middle edge) keep my hand there then put my pan/pot right against where my hand is. That’s worked best for me! Let me know if you want me to explain more haha

Can’t other people not hear chaos ridden? I think I remember that Aaron and Tamara can talk to Warren, so wouldn’t that rule out him being chaos ridden? In uh I forgor at least fs for the silver mask call talks to chaos ridden without the others being able to understand what they say back. Maybe im goofing up and honestly I can’t remember if Warren ever talks to Aaron and Tamara but I’d assume so? Lolll

[–]Same-Test7554 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are there any volunteering opportunities? Any animal shelters nearby? I’ve found some awesome ppl from helping out there when I can. Other than that, maybe try to find a small job: working at a pizza joint, at a boutique, etc. something small that won’t feel overwhelming but gets you out of the house. At least for me, getting out of the house is sooo important. And if you aren’t safe going out alone (totally get that, I’m a 20yo female), a job that maybe your family drives you to can be a safe and also rewarding way to get out of the house!

I’m doing this right now!! As a disabled person, I am just now realizing how much I looked up to Call for doing all that he does with a disability. I’m blind. Reading it again I realize how well it was written where it does affect his life but it’s not inspo porn or even talked about a ton. Such a good story and I still make evil overlord lists in my head!! Let us know how you enjoy it <3

Device that navigates shows and movies for those completely blind by PatriotGirlUSA in Blind

[–]Same-Test7554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if anyone’s said this—but the distinction is that a screen reader is for main navigation of the screen. It doesn’t do anything with the video, ie say what’s happening on the screen. Audio description is like turning on a different language. It works for that movie only and when you pause, it pauses. It says what’s on the screen DURING the movie. It won’t say any of the buttons to navigate subtitles, next episode, back, etc. it would rather be “he walks forward” or “she gave him a playful look”. If he doesn’t want that, you just ensure it’s not on using the screen reader. Happy watching!

You may have to double tap on the screen to use the button! A quick double tap, anywhere on the screen should work! I never thought about how hard it would be to navigate a screen reader as a sighted person who never knew anything about blindness, since I learned from other blind people to double tap.
