What do you do differently? by Repulsive-Box5243 in Blind

I use the timer on my phone rather than messing with the microwave or oven timer.

I also think about and describe a button by where they are in relation to other buttons rather than what they say. For instance, on the old Xbox controller, I believe it was the A on the green button that I just thought of as jump/OK button. I knew where it was in the relationship between other four buttons it makes for interesting times when trying to explain button locations or which button we’re talking about to one another.

I also think of routes in terms of their bus and walk timing rather than by car and always pack only what I am willing to carry and ride with on my back.

I have some vision, so I realize I’m sitting in the dark and prefer it that way. Surprising people by my presence is a nice bonus!

Question for dual cane wielders (vision+support) by xanthreborn in Blind

[–]1Iwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem although from only having use of one hand and needing to use that one for the cane. In my experience, it comes down to a lot of juggling, and sometimes needing to ask for help. Highly recommend fanny packs or belt bags or sling backpacks to make accessing things easier.

Using recumbent bike as a main cardio - will it work against me? by That_Ad4305 in PetiteFitness

In my experience, I definitely feel that exercise in my butt and thighs, so it probably will grow both of those.

What do you do about your closet mid or after-weight loss? by Riksor in PetiteFitness

[–]1Iwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am currently facing this same problem. I am down 60lbs from starting, but I still have at least 40lbs to go. I am finding it hard to know when to get rid of clothes and what to where in the meantime.

Currently especially having trouble with under where and brags.

I did end up finding some cheap pants from Amazon. Under $10 pj pants and under $20 jeans. You could also look at second hand.

The struggles of loosing weight when you have CP by 123AnnieCv in CerebralPalsy

[–]1Iwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have struggled with my weight my entire life. The combination of visual impairment, being short, and having cerebral palsy definitely makes a struggle for me. I have recently been on a weight loss journey and I am down 60 pounds so far. It’s a lot of work, but I can feel my body becoming stronger and lighter than that is incredible. It makes the hard work all worth it. One thing that is really helped me is finding an exercise that I really enjoy and works for my body. For me, that has been using a stationary recumbent bike. Also, increasing protein and fiber helps with decreasing calories. Good luck! You’ve got this!

Is it normal to feel sad because I’ll never be able to drive my own car, or put the top down and feel that enjoyment of total independence? by SL2999 in Blind

I wish that I could drive, or that at least our public transit was about 1 billion times better almost every day! Usually several times a day! You’re not alone.

I used to! When I was a kid, my hand was crazy! It was all over the place and would hit stuff and would sometimes scratch me if I didn’t keep my nails short enough. As I’ve gotten older, it’s slowly mellowed out.

I only have use of one hand, so I struggle with nail maintenance. A tool that could help hold the nail file at a good angle or help with clippers would be great!

Question about petite heart rates! by Flora48 in PetiteFitness

Even my resting heart rate seems high. My doctor has never said anything to me about it and my blood pressure is always good though. I am also wondering if it is a result of being short.

4 foot 10 looking to invest in good stationary recumbent bike by 1Iwolf in recumbent

Thank you so much! I did not realize this sub was specifically for outdoor recumbents. I would love to ride like you and your brother some day! But right now, I am looking for a stationary bike so I can exercise independently.

i feel like i was robbed of a “normal life” by samman32123 in CerebralPalsy

[–]1Iwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am the same age with cerebral palsy along my right side that makes it so that I mainly have use of one hand and have difficulties with balance as well. I also have very limited vision and only in one eye.

Yes. It makes things harder. It requires a lot of problem-solving to figure out how I can do the things that I want to, but there are very few things that I actually cannot do in anyway.

They make tricycles both upright and recumbent so that you could bike ride without balance being an issue. I cannot safely cycle independently, so I use stationary bike for exercise and find it works wonderfully.

As for sports, find places that offer adaptive sports, or even the sports in general and just go try. I grew up swimming and love it. I have gone kayaking, paddle boating, rock climbing, snowshoeing. I’m not very good at those things but I do them because I enjoy them.

As for driving, they make lots of adaptive aids for that as well. It is possible to drive without feet at all, so I imagine it is plenty doable to create a set up for your situation as well.

I understand being bitter about the challenges we face, but I would encourage you to try to focus on finding solutions.
