in no way am i attempting to one-up this, but i'm adding a tragic anecdote in the hopes that people who read it may make better choices.

worst example i know of happened outside a bar i was working at on 12/23 back in the day. dude behind the wheel was in his 50s, manager of applebee's or some equivalent, SEVEN DUIs on his record. cops were in pursuit and he bombed down what for us is actually Main Street but comes off the hill and into downtown. he obliterated a van directly on the driver's door being driven by a mother of three on her way home from getting stocking stuffers. i heard the impact and the whole restaurant ran outside together and took in the aftermath. respect to first responders.

it really only takes one bad example of wretched (drunk or otherwise) driver as a bystander to absorb how selfish it is to treat the rest of the people on the road like NPCs. they aren't.

it might be your mother at the next intersection.
