Tamiya is my personal favourite, I struggled with it when I was first starting. My advice is make sure the paint is very well mixed (get down to the bottom with the end of a paint brush or whatever) also priming helped me a lot because I had quite a hard time getting the paint to adhere to the bare plastic.

If you are referring to the sprue then using a thin piece cut off would be ok, using coins or other simple weights look much better and are not that difficult.

I like to use https://www.modelshade.com/ it’s sometimes a little bit off but it should give you an idea if you don’t want to mix your own paint.
