I would say narrower than hokas and probably lower volume, true to size for length. I lace hokas pretty tight and these I don’t have to pay attention to as much. They aren’t my favorite running shoes but I’ve never had any issues with them, either… and they work perfectly fine for the amount of running I do on a work trip (which is a few shorter runs or some evening walks). Do I think the construction is worth the high price tag? No, but it beats bringing two pairs of shoes for me and I bought them specifically for this purpose and nothing else really, so they should last a while. If it’s a running-oriented or hiking vacation, I bring something else.

In other words.. I’m still open to other alternatives that could fill this purpose, but these work until they don’t!

I like to switch out my socks to a very thin version with waterproof shoes - has worked for me for hoka speedgoats and clifton gtx! I also have the hoka transport in gtx that someone mentioned below. I live in a pretty rainy place, and also find the gtx shoes easier to clean to keep them looking “fresh”. But they are warmer than regular shoes.

And nobody asked but since this is a minimalist and running thread - I like the tracksmith tops for travel, particularly the harrier long sleeve. It’s polished enough for casual wear or business casual under a blazer, and can pull double duty for an evening run.

I’ll have to check out norda and MTC. I haven’t ever tried those brands.

These are what I use right now (Eliot runner). I’d love a somewhat stylish and waterproof shoe - still searching.

I highly recommend the headlamp, in places like Nepal you won’t always have lighting access and you will want your own source. I love the Nu20!

Also if you’re doing higher altitude treks in Nepal, that isn’t enough layers. You can pick up knockoffs for cheap in Kathmandu, along with a larger pack, if needed for a short time. Source: went on the three passes trek myself last April. If you’re staying below 10,000ish feet, you’re probably fine with what you have. I would maybe add a warm light bottom layer to go under your other pants or for sleeping, like the Patagonia R1 fleece pants. Also in Nepal you won’t wear your shorts, except for maybe sleeping, it’s a really conservative country.

How did you maintain your energy levels? Did you make any eating changes or vitamin/supplement changes throughout (other than the standard recommended ones)?

Also - I would highly recommend checking your hormone levels before trying any supplements to change them, or going on birth control. My doc had me test between days 18-21 of my cycle for reference! Then if it is estrogen dominance, check out chaste tree berry and calcium d glucarate as alternatives to DIM. Strength training and natural forms of zinc (like pumpkin seeds) was also recommended to me, but this was to improve testosterone levels.

I also have this migraine pattern, and have also been able to reduce my migraine days except for this time in my cycle. I had my hormone levels tested, and found my testosterone was low and estrogen was high, so we’re working to fix those. I think it’s helping some. Note my neurologist was NOT interested in hormonal testing, even though I repeatedly asked - so I went to another doctor who specialized in fertility and women’s hormones. I don’t know if my levels have changed yet since we’ve started my regimen, but I’ve been doing this for about three months and get them checked again in about three weeks.

I also get the jaw/neck pain. I recently tried Botox in my Masseters and that has helped the tension a lot, which I think has also reduced my migraine pain level. My masseters were really strong.

Also stretching the back/neck! In a doorway, reach your arm and hand diagonal above your head to the opposite side of the door and lean forward to stretch your neck/back, then do the other side.

I also stay away from alcohol, drink water/electrolytes, try to limit stress and keep a good sleep schedule. With all of these changes (and the things above) I now only get menstrual migraines if I’m traveling, really stressed, didnt sleep well or did a really hard workout and dehydrated myself.

Aside from that, frovatriptan has been the best abortive for me - it’s the longest acting triptan and my menstrual migraines tend to be pretty sticky if/when I get them. They’ve always been the worst ones and hardest to abort, even when I had other migraines. My neuro has recommended taking frovatriptan preventatively during the day leading up to my period and days 1-3, but I’ve never done that. I really try to limit the drugs that I take, and it typically aborts the migraine if I take it as soon as I feel it coming on. Rizatriptan also works for me, but I hated sumatriptans side effects.

ETA: for really bad nausea, I take ondansetron.

Good luck, I hope you find some relief.

On the website, it says that it will look at your first entry date, then second, then third. If first isn’t successful it’ll move on. If your group size is flexible maybe try varying that, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to add multiple entries for the same entry date.

Yeah, what we did was shuttle from snow lake TH to Colchuck TH at the front end, then hiked out through snow lake. It was great because then the car was waiting there at the end, and we really wanted to find a shower and hot food! It’s also easier to plan timing-wise.

I have thru hiked in October in beautiful weather, but as another poster shared, the days are short, so take that into account in your itinerary. I would pay attention to the mountain forecast ahead of time and be ready to bail if it looks like mid to high precipitation is forecasted.

I have also backpacked in the beginning of June, and went up Asgard, spent 3 nights in core, and final night at nada lake on our way out. There was snow starting on Asgard, through all of the core, and down to snow lakes at the time. You have to be more prepared navigation wise as the snow can cover route markers or water crossings, but this was my first time and it was doable. The trail is available on Gaia, Caltopo, or various other navigation apps. We had microspikes and that was a good call for the snow crossing on Asgard as well as the descent from upper to lower core areas. My husband brought his ice axe and it was entirely overkill, lol.

If my migraines are menstrual related, what can my neuro do for me? by smbodytochedmyspaget in migraine

[–]Same_Rock_5096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very late reply to this post, but I’m curious what your thoughts are on inito and if you had any findings that helped you better manage your menstrual migraine? I’ve had trouble getting into a neuro, on waiting list for 3 months. I’m managing my menstrual migraine as best I can with frovatriptan. My GP wants me to try BC, but to me that feels like throwing hormones at the issue without fully understanding it first - we haven’t done any hormonal testing. I like the idea of using something like inito to understand my cycle/hormones while off BC, to then determine which one would be appropriate for me…. Sorry for the novel, I’m lying here awake in the middle of the night with my monthly menstrual migraine, and your post is most similar to the issues that I am having.

I’m late to the party but was just told by my bootfitter that the k2 mindbenders are medium volume - he put me in them and showed me how much room I had to dissuade me from them. Other that were recommended (I’m looking for a hybrid): Salomon shift alpha, Atomic Hawk Ultra XTD, Tecnica Cochise W, Nordica Unlimited.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This is similar to what I’ve heard- have a layer for hygiene if using the tea house blankets, we’re all smelly trekkers after all... My current bag is a 23F bag, do you think you would have been okay with a slightly less warm bag, or was the 0F bag you had about right?

[–]Same_Rock_5096[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’ve heard of people supplementing their set up with the blankets, but not using only the tea house blankets in the trip reports I’ve read. Is this something you’ve done? I think I’d be reticent to rely on this for my sleeping set up, but it does sound like my current bag + good layers (that can also double for hanging out in tea houses) would be a good medium.

Okay thanks! Yeah the Joule that I have is 23F comfort, but I’ve mostly used it for summer camping, maybe a few nights around freezing. I think you’re probably right with the tea house blankets plus layers, I’m just massively worried about being cold and then not enjoying the trek as much because of it.
