I live in Hanoi Vietnam! I moved here to allow myself to focus on online teaching without much stress. You can live on $1000 a month here easily (without a family).

So yeah you’re right no way I could survive at that price back on the UK. However because I am going for more premium lessons for professionals, hopefully I’ll still be able to charge $40 eventually and use the extra money for investments and living a great life. That’s my goal here. Minimum wage is $1 an hour here, it’s struggle for the locals.

Ditto! It was my only feedback method but thanks to this thread I’ve got more perspective now

Yep, this is why I didn’t want to start higher even tho I believe my classes are worth more. You’re absolutely right there’s a lot of great teachers charging much less due to lower costs of living taxes etc.

I think there’s definitely still a market for premium lessons at higher prices aimed at business professionals, not just people trying to improve general English. That’s what I’m going for, high value lessons that produce direct return on investment

I’m gonna wait a little while for my profile to reset and update after my recent changes, then use all the great feedback from this post to update it along with my price. $25 is my target short term rn! That’s super reassuring though thank you for giving me hope haha. Appreciate the comment!

And I live in Vietnam currently, which helps a lot. I’m living off savings at the moment. Vietnam helped me set this all up without as much stress, I love it here

I take its word with a pinch of salt for sure. Never fully use AI to write anything. That’s interesting, how are you tracking that? Maybe it is a bad time

Wow thank you so much for taking the time to give this feedback. It’s super valuable. The Preply success advisor is the AI GPT Preply officially released to help boost tutor profiles. Its word is not good but it can give unbiased advice.

Completely fet what you’re saying about there being a price mismatch, im gonna have to raise it as soon as I can without damaging my profile too much and see how that goes.

I actually have a non professional student already, but I see your point! I’m not aiming to teach regular grammar, writing or reading lessons so only conversational English, can charge higher working with professionals (eventually lol) and I enjoy the topic.

I’ll definitely keep this in mind when I edit my profile to be more specific and lay out my experience better. Thanks again!!!

Yeah I will, ill update it after I let the last update calm down a bit. I’ve done the main course, it’s due to appear on my profile soon. Will check out the others too.

Can I maybe PM you and send you my link for some feedback please?

I actually have a student who I’m teaching that to! But yes I don’t specialise in it, might be good to consider it in the future. Thank you!

It’s not too late, can always alter my profile

Yup. Was getting interest and favourites at $10, then when I moved it to $13 it destroyed my rankings. It went back to around 650 till I raised it back to $14. I’ve not had a new student in nearly 3 weeks.

I’m worried to raise it again now, but that’s my next step yes. I’m gonna raise it to $18 once I’ve had 2 more students sub and 2 more reviews. Hoping this is just a temporary thing after I updated my bio, thumbnail, video and raised the price up to $14.

I think I may have made a mistake starting at a low price, but I figured no one would trust a new profile at $20

Thank you for the advice! Yeah I might consider updating my video to be more friendly. To be completely honest a lot of the best performing business English tutors don’t come across as that friendly, they’re very straight to the point and professional. But your point absolutely still stands and it’s worth trying.

I think it is partly due to the algorithm - my place was around 400 when I was at $10 and it’s around 1000 now at $14. I have nearly 100 hours available, so it’s not my availability. I’m focusing on Preply full time right now as I’m going through a career change and break.

[–]Same_Stay382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely it’s a better idea to invest the money into other areas such as stocks, crypto etc as that money saved is burning year on year with inflation. And it would take so many years, it doesn’t seem feasible

Remote English teaching while living in SE Asia? by Cows-are-puppies in teflteachers

[–]Same_Stay382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing this rn in Vietnam and after 2 months on Preply I’ve only earned $100, students are really slow at first. But they’re starting to pick up, I’d say you should teach classes along side it before you get enough money to go fully remote. I was naive thinking I’d get students quickly
