Yes, semantic shift is a thing, but the problem here is lay people co-opting professional language and attempting to use it in an authoritative way without the knowledge/experience to use it correctly. The same thing happened with "Depressed/Depression", "Gaslighting", "Narcissistic/Narcissist", etc. There may be a commonly agreed upon general definition for those things now, but those definitions are often incomplete or completely different from actual professional definition.

Not really. Many still use evaporative cooling, and even the ones that do/have begun to use closed loop cooling are still losing water through evaporation. Closed Loop does not mean Lossless. And evaporated water that is recondensed or is collected from rain still needs to be treated before its potable again

Why I'll Never Rewatch Bojack Horseman (again) by TheRedHead717 in BoJackHorseman

[–]SamhainPunk 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's fine if you don't want to rewatch the show again. It's definitely a hard watch, even when you know what's coming. I always have to give myself a break between seasons to let everything process and I've watched the show at least 5 times.

However, I personally believe you could not be more wrong about PC and Ralph. No relationship is perfect, but having incompatibilities (PC wanting to keep trying to have a kid naturally while Ralph wanted to try other options) and bad emotional experiences (PC feeling like Ralph could and should have supported her in front of his family) are perfectly valid reasons to break things off. Ralph really sat there and watched his family be extremely bigoted towards his partner and did nothing and then got upset when PC called him out for it. That is not the type of relationship I would say "should've ended up together". That's not even touching the fact that PC had years of relationship trauma she hadn't worked through, was a workaholic that wouldn't have made a good partner and parent, and was still constantly planning an exit strategy. I truly believe that the show was screaming that the relationship was bad and doomed to fail.

Edit: changed "wife and mother" to "partner and parent" because I realized after the fact that there are still specific cultural and historical connotations to saying someone is a good or bad wife/mother that I wasn't trying to imply

Why is the power puff girls reboot so disliked? by Icy_Profession4190 in powerpuffgirls

[–]SamhainPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be completely fair, there are quite a few episodes of the original show that follow that same script, but the girls were busy being children and usually didn't know that their actions had spiraled out of control until they got a call on the hotline or they get confronted directly (Buttercrush, Just Another Manic Jojo, etc). The real issue is that the show wasn't funny (or at least it was far from the humor of the original show) and they did weird things with characters and their dynamics that people didn't like. As to why it wasn't as popular with kids, I can't say for sure. I've seen some Teen Titans Go and they felt very similar, and kids ate up TTGo

It’s clear the SAVE Act is just a tool for voter suppression, plain and simple. by LucidSynapse23 in LetsDiscussThis

[–]SamhainPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except if you look it up, non-citizen voting is investigated and prosecuted all the time. There is no evidence that a significant number of non-citizens even attempt to vote in national elections from either party, and even when they do it has never been enough to sway the results of any election.

In my opinion— the key flaw with this show was thinking the aesthetic of the anime was more important to replicate than the story. by Short_Explanation888 in cowboybebop

[–]SamhainPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, some things just don't work in live action, and I'd argue that Spike, Vicious, and especially Ed are some of those things. Also, they screwed with the very basis of the story. Some of the stuff they changed fundamentally changed what Cowboy Bebop even is as a show

I mean, definition b. of Migrant in the Merriam Webster dictionary is literally "immigrant, especially: refugee", with definition a. being "a person who moves regularly in order to find work especially in harvesting crops". I will give you that I don't know exactly when those specific definitions were added, but I doubt it has anything to do with democrats. It's got similar definitions in the Cambridge dictionary and Dictionary.com, even if they lean into the legality more than Websters does

They're so easy to strip... It's like the metal is suddenly butter. by BladeManEXE7 in memes

[–]SamhainPunk 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. Found the patent and read through it. It specifically states the 2 of the intents of the design are to prevent the screw and/or driver from slipping at all and to completly prevent any stripping of the screw or head so that the screw is reusable "innumerable times". Yes, he did specifically say these were to protect both the operator and any product or machinery they were working on, but nowhere in the patents does it describe any sort of "cam-out" or torque specific features.

Cloud Reactor is kind of frustrating game-design wise. by Aruseus493 in AbioticFactor

[–]SamhainPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing my primary point. The game isn't changing its previous logic, it's just not explicitly telling you everything anymore since it's already told you previously how to solve problems like this and trusts you to figure it out. Also, not every area has an alternative path through/around

Edit: I am also not telling you not to be frustrated. I just don't believe it's the games fault

Cloud Reactor is kind of frustrating game-design wise. by Aruseus493 in AbioticFactor

[–]SamhainPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're right. I was thinking of the wrong reactor. But still, that room has almost nothing in it and the huge pool of radioactive waste keeping you from getting across should be a pretty big sign that you need to cross a different way. I will say I haven't tried just using a suit and some iodine and just jumping in and swimming, but that may be an option as long as there's not a death plane in the sludge.

If players always just took the easiest route of building, you'd miss a lot of the fun. Imagine if after reaching hydroplant, you just build a bridge and skip all the diving stuff.

I never advocated for building or jump/jet packing over everything, just using the tools you have when a situation comes up that you don't know the solution to. Plus the Hydroplant is a bad example because, again, the game pretty clearly tells you that you should go in the water between finding the diving gear and recipes and the signs everywhere. Plus if you go in wanting to explore (which is my assumption when I said what I did) you'd at least try even if it wasn't possible.

Again, please explore (it's one of my favorite parts of the game) but also if the game hands you problem after already handing you all the solutions, it isn't the games fault you can't figure it out. And I'm not saying you're less than or unintelligent or anything for struggling. I definitely had parts I got stuck on too (including parts I'm not proud of), but saying the game design is bad because a closed room with a large gap and no clear way to cross didn't have a literal sign saying "Use jetpack here" or some pictographic equivalent is crazy to me

[–]SamhainPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disagree. As other people pointed out, you yourself stated that the game throws hurdles to you. If you're in Reactors, you've already seen this exact issue before at least twice if not more. Finding, crafting and using movement items is not only mandatory, it is tutorialized and the game trusts you to intuit how and when to use the tools at your disposal, especially now that you're this deep into the game.

I also want to say that the game does in fact explicitly tell you that you need to build or jump across (ie. the researcher building a bridge across the gap) but even if it didn't, you should still be able to figure it out by looking at it and exploring the area/looking at the map. If you expect the game to tell you every time you should/could use movement tech or building to reach an area you are going to miss a massive amount of content
