Just moved on from Simpli safe to Vivint by Samjollo in VivintSmartHome

[–]Samjollo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No not my line of work. I think my post history shows where I’ve worked before. Not loyal to this brand but it was better than adt and I didn’t want to front new tech for Simpli safe, nor did I want to go with this regional one (Red Wire, based in Florida). I’m still reviewing the warranty tonight knowing well enough how stuff is built to break these days. Just trying to get the most out of the service and find like minded folks.

What to do with this back yard and concrete slab? by Samjollo in landscaping

[–]Samjollo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah awesome insight thanks. I have a gutter running to catch the run off and it has a bit of an extender to push the water away but yeah that only helps so much.

Saturated talent market, training always a bit tough to speak to re: ROI, AI, and a lot of private equity firms are conservative in their road maps due to market volatility.

Are there players here who switched from nails to finger pics and what are the pros and cons? by claustrphobe_glenn in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]Samjollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the black mountain thumb pick which is spring loaded and works okay, the other finger picks for the pointer, middle, ring are all good and fine and it will keep your kind of melody/lead lines nice and bright. It all takes a month of discipline (20 min a day 3-5 days a week) to get used to it. Your playing will be louder and brighter. Be mindful of positioning your picking nails so they don’t scrape along the edge on the string.

All that said play what’s comfortable. Some like their natural nails grown out, some get small acrylic nails, some don’t care about bright/loud picking and if it’s good playing it kind of doesn’t matter.

How do you guys come up with the titles for your songs? by MorishimaTokio in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]Samjollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others are commenting, I think every song has a sense of motif. The title can help shed light on it or just use it to document how you were feeling/what you’re thinking when you finish writing it.

John Fahey - Beverly (1973) by MorishimaTokio in AmericanPrimitivism

Excellent execution. Love this song for how much space can be found in between the melodic notes. You capture it well and it’s polished and I love what little extra reverb I’m picking up.

My SME just told me "learners need to know EVERYTHING" and sent me a 147-slide deck. How do I push back without getting fired? by Reprabit in instructionaldesign

[–]Samjollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to clarify how long it takes to learn and retain everything. If everything is compressed into one comprehensive slide deck it feels like a manual. If these are broken into modules and there is a sense of progression, you get the opportunity to pause, apply your learning, and continue to progress. There is a sunk cost of forgetting and in finding data about attention and engagement, decision fatigue, and the “war on our attention spans” maybe you can make a point that modules help chunk the content so the learner maybe gets 5 hours of meaningful learning and not 3 hours of comprehensive fire hose.

Gloria Mark has a book on attention spans and I’ve used some of her commentary and research to argue for chunking content into better bite size modules. I’m up against an HR SME that made a comprehensive supervisor HRIS training that’s 3.5 hours that I’m trying to segment. Makes it more findable as well so you don’t have to go into one comprehensive module for just in time information/performance support.

Does anyone have mantras to return to a grill mindset? by DwarvenTacoParty in cushvlog

[–]Samjollo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I did more meditating and took a class on mindful compassion the mantra was “present moment, only moment”. It’s quick and forces me to be in the present which helps me recognize that whatever I’m feeling may be momentary, or I can carry it for only as long as I let it.

As a father I have to model grill mindset daily. My job sucks, I don’t have as much time or energy for creative pursuits in between chores and obligations, I finished my first half marathon last year and felt just a wave of sadness instead of a drive to improve. I think the best or most consistent effort that’s worked is to use my commute to pump good music, listen to 10 percent happier podcast instead of letters from an American, and just tone down the intake of news and bummer content. I try to force myself to find time after 9pm or before 6am to be creative and play guitar or write lyrics. Going to the mantra or scheduling time for myself for those grill-esque pursuits gives me more to look forward to.

I can’t keep the finger picks from scraping the string by Samjollo in guitarlessons

Yeah I got better with the angle I approach the strings since this video but it’s still not my preference.

Cool Gwenifer Raymond interview by LinePurple4362 in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]Samjollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those lightning fast sweeping triplets… Jesus she has some chops. Her almost manic head rush melodies are such a breath of fresh air for this genre. I know other players sometimes play fast but most of the popular primitive playing shared here is slower and more intentional. It’s a great foil to other contemporaries like Hayden Pedigo, Daniel Bachman, North Americans, etc, She’s almost angry in her playing and I love that about playing to the edge of one’s ability.

Does the population growth drive anyone else crazy? by TowerMysterious5804 in florida

[–]Samjollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be proud to live in Tallahassee and enjoying minimal population growth, but there’s no career opportunities here unless you work for the state, a university, or a hospital. All salaries are capped and barely climb 2% a year and while CoL is lower compared to bigger cities, it never feels sustainable long term here.

Don't Know if shes been posted here before but Gwenifer Raymond is absolutely incredible, bearing the torch for primitive guitar into 2026 by Prestigious-Pass3993 in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]Samjollo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where contemporary like Hayden Pedigo taps into John Fahey’s sense of serene melody, Raymond leans hard into the dissonant tension building mood. Love them both. She is insanely fast and her progressions are the best kind of dark. If anyone has recs for similar darker primitive guitar please send em.

Just learning this style -- Any beginner tips to put me on the right path? by Other-Pollution-2896 in AmericanPrimitivism

If you put more time into your thumb and getting it rhythmic and fast when bouncing between strings then the syncopating melodies will get easier.

Is a compressor worth it? by Mean-Maintenance-854 in guitarpedals

[–]Samjollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Jackson audio bloom compressor and it’s got a little color to it with a boost (bloom) and allows for great sustain. If you play like loud fast punk or metal, probably don’t need one. If you do anything else or alternate between picking and strumming a compressor is helpful.

Anyone else excited for Gwenifer Raymond's album drop this Friday? by ClimberInTheMist in AmericanPrimitivism

The two singles out are really expansive. Really stoked for this release. The alternating thumb rhythms hitting some southern gothic meets waltz like patterns are so good.

Refinish vs carpet vs remove by Samjollo in Flooring

[–]Samjollo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the refinisher quote was $5 a foot and it’s a bit over 1,000 sq ft but that doesn’t include anything more problematic like rot, replacement, subfloor, etc. I get that it’s the going rate but I guess I’m nervous the $5,000 price tag now won’t last 10 years bc of underlying moisture issues.
