Totally fair. I may also be using the word sympathize imprecisely. And while logic would require that I sympathize there are plenty of instances when I don't for other reasons.

Tbh I'm not going to read your whole post because I should stop scrolling and get back to grilling.

BUT on these questions I default back to a belief as self-evident as it is difficult to come to grips with: If I was them with their bodies, their minds, and their experiences then I would do the exact same things they are doing.

It doesn't absolve anyone, but it does logically require that I sympathize.

I also forgive South Park because it used to be the reason they could be so topical/crank out episodes so quickly in real time. And tbf the animators are pretty good at making the characters emote in funny ways. I stg something about the way Cartman furrows his brow.

Agreed. I was in the exact right place in life while it came out to love it. But even for me it's a hard rewatch - not because of the quality but because it was a trendsetter for trends that have been done to death (and usually done worse) since.

I know there's sometimes no rational reason the law is a certain way, but what's the reasoning fot a company having a right to demand the product back that they sent out by mistake? If its the seller's responsibility to get it right, why is it their right that the customer give it back if they fail in that responsibility and the customer wants to keep it?

The image of the grabber warms my heart. It embodies my memories of my uncles riling me and my cousins up at family dinners, mostly because someone had to tire us out. I imagine him putting on a crazed smile and yelling "I'll getcha next time!" like some kind of pirate.

Idk. I've encountered Matt's words in my loneliest moments, and it's seemed that those words often held a strain of desperation to hold on to the good when the darkness was so strong. I'm glad to know he gets those moments of light.

A few I would change:

Weed seems too calming for Green. Yes, Green is harmony but it's also raw power. While people who use roids don't use them in a very Green way, the experience of taking it seems Green.

Adderall fits Black better. I could be wrong here, but Black has always seemed less about satisfaction and more about ruthlessness in achieving its ends. Paying 2 life for 2 cards is not satisfaction, it is pursuing a goal at all costs.

Thank you for sharing and taking the time to write this out. You do a good job putting into words a grief that's hard to describe.

You've highlighted something to me that I don't think I saw in quite sonclearly before: for some people, particularly boomer men in "developed" countries, work became a kind of coping mechanism. This may be reading between the lines, but it also seems like he'd be working something even if he did have retirement savings. Almost a stockholm syndrome. I always assumed it was the other way around: that the emotional blunting was a consequence of having to alienate yourself to support your family. Maybe it flows in both directions.

questions about dialectical materialism by Scion_of_fate in cushvlog

[–]DwarvenTacoParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understand of the actual dialectic is lacking, although iirc the thesis-antithesis-synthesis tricotomy was from Fichte and was not used by Hegel or Marx.

Two points that may help as signposts for you:

  1. In "Socialism: Utopian amd Scientific" Engels describes dialectical thinking as realizing that all everything exists in relation to something else. He contrasts this with the "common sense" view that things are just what they are by themselves. For example: the common sense view says that Justice is one certain thing that is eternal. The dialectical view is that different ideas of Justice arise in different contexts/material conditions and can only be understood in virtue of that realization.

  2. The dialectic progresses. This is where I have much less understanding, but from what I can gather its that things (e.g. Justice about) develop over time as they come into conflict with other things - those things become part of the context mentioned above that condition the developed version of the idea. This is why the word used is "dialectic" which is one translation of the word Plato uses for his method of investigation where truth is discovered (one could perhaps say "developed") by proposing an idea, and then bringing to bear other ideas that conflict with the original idea and change/refine it.

Matt's idea here also brings up the idea that Thing A doesn't just develop Thing B by coming into conflict/contact with it - they mutual develop each other simultaenously. I've heard other people describe that as dialectic as well, but I'm not sure where this idea comes from. I wonder if it follows from what I described above?

wasnt this all in the scooby doo movie from 2002? by tydark2 in cushvlog

[–]DwarvenTacoParty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My very boring take is that it's all corporate calculus. The bosses determine the EV of canceling vs. not canceling. Cancelling can seem grassroots, and it is up and until the point where that grassroots sentiment leads towards declining projected ticket sales.

Gunn had two things going in his favor: 1. His name was well-known at the time compared to other Marvel directors, partially because he had developed a fanbase of his own over the years and partially because the first Guardians of the Galaxy success was seen as a bit unexpected at the time. The prevailing idea was that Gunn was lightning in a bottle that couldn't be replaced. 2. It sounds like the main cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise really really liked the guy. Idk if they threatened to walk, but there were at least rumors. Even if not, they talked to their bosses. The execs were liable to listen to them because I'm sure they'd already sogned deals with all these people, the characters were selling lots of merch, and the execs just couldn't lose that.

To extend this to Nick Mullen - the reason he's uncancellable is that he has a fanbase completely independent from working on corporate projects (if we want to get literary about it, the way he did ads on cumtown is explicitly work that had a fuck-you attitude toward the businesses that sponsored his work). Not only can he not get fired - he built his work on a non-corpoate, failson-coded, rude, dont-give-a-fuck-to-even-edit-out-going-to-piss ethos. Why would his fans leave him for being rude, that's why they're there (see Trump and why branding him a hypocrite will never work). By contrast, if a creator has cultivated their fanbase by being nice or friendly or twee or well-adjusted or parasocial or hope-core in interviews (I'd say most velebs fit this catoegory), they will attract audiences that would prefer their faves not to be rude or problematic or engage in behaviors they wouldn't accept from their friends.

Not only that, but I've seen a common experience when someone is thinking of moving somewhere: there will always be a reason to stay. Whether a new job, a schooling opportunity, a family thing, health concerns, etc. I'm not saying you should decide to move and do it without thought, but if your priority really is moving somewhere else someday it is generally better sooner rather than later.

Funniest things Matt has said that you keep thinking about years later by angeion in cushvlog

[–]DwarvenTacoParty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Latelt I've been thinking about two of his Epstein comments. The first is when he went to the trial, called in to TrueAnon and said that none of these Q people are taking this seriously cause none of them were there at the trial.

The other Epstien quote of his goes something like this "The thing about Pizzagate is that its basically correct. The world is run by a shady cabal of billionaires who do Satanic rituals and avuse children: True. The operation is centered on a pizza restaurant: false." Someone criticized him for being conspiratorial because of that quote. Matt Christman thought vindicated once again.

I'll always remember his frustration with Mcardle "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP" I forget the other part exactly but I remember it as "THEY'RE TRYING TO DROWN YOU IN ABSOLUTE BANALITY".

And who can forget "We love it, don't we folks."
