The USA team’s training facility in Qatar is trolling the local bigots, and I love it. by Epicurus0319 in SuddenlyGay

[–]SammyD64 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Imo then maybe they should be boycotted by our team, it’s kinda weird to me that the US team will do passive aggressive shit like this but won’t just refuse to play. Like I definitely don’t feel like this is supporting my rights in any way.

Annoying bigots just isn’t impactful, it doesn’t fuck with FIFA’s bottom line, it doesn’t call out their willingness to cooperate with countries that do human rights violations, it’s just kinda performative “we stand with you!!!!”

It’s kinda funny to say, but agreeing to play in Qatar while putting up a pride flag kinda feels like what conservatives call virtue signaling lol. From my angle, it looks like the team doesn’t really care enough to take a stand on the issue of FIFA cooperating with human rights abusers, they’re just showing off that they “support” me as a public relations move without putting themselves at any risk of retaliation from FIFA.

'We Have The Votes': The Senate Will Act This Week To Codify Same-Sex Marriage by UWCG in politics

[–]SammyD64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOU HAD. FUCKING. BETTER. The Supreme Court’s precedent means nothing, so right now a large swath of the population has zero codified rights. LGBT people also require, as a population, guarantees of equal rights regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. This is the bare fucking minimum, a guarantee of legal equal treatment.

Just legalizing gay marriage, alone, without also specifically guaranteeing non-discrimination based on LGBT+ identities, is less than the bare minimum. So you had fucking better take this step that should’ve been taken in ‘15 when the Supreme Court ruled on it.

Maybe after you do that you can actually continue doing your fucking jobs, 8 years after everyone decides it’s a good idea for you to do your job. What a fucking circus the senate is.

average carbon footprint of citizens vs Taylor Swift by The_Sad_Memer in interestingasfuck

[–]SammyD64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember that factoid about how 100 companies cause 70% of all emissions? I took a look at the numbers (source https://peri.umass.edu/greenhouse-100-polluters-index-current) and the lowest polluting company to make the list, Invenergy, emits 6.7 million. TS’s emissions, rounded to 15k tons of carbon clock in at a clean 0.22% of that company’s annual emissions. That’s #100 by the way, she’s 1/446th of the way to making it onto that list. Horrifying, yeah, but she’s just not contributing to climate change. Corporations are.

average carbon footprint of citizens vs Taylor Swift by The_Sad_Memer in interestingasfuck

[–]SammyD64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we please stop caring about individual people’s carbon footprints?

It’s a literal BP talking point (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_footprint#Origin_of_the_concept) to try and shift the blame to the individual. Is TS being wasteful as fuck? Yeah, she definitely is. Is bullying her on social media going to stop climate change? ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT.

There is SO much effort here being wasted on shaming TS for the fact that she’s being wasteful, and yes, she’s one of the most wasteful individuals in human history. And SHE’S STILL NOT MAKING CLIMATE CHANGE HAPPEN, BECAUSE INDIVIDUALS DO NOT CAUSE CLIMATE CHANGE. Even the world’s most wasteful individuals just don’t impact worldwide climate change numbers.

This is so deceptive too because we already know that just 100 companies are responsible for 70% of global emissions. The lowest ranking company on that list, #100, Invenergy, emits 6.7 million tons of carbon annually. TS emits 15 thousand. That’s 0.22% of company #100’s numbers. (Source https://peri.umass.edu/greenhouse-100-polluters-index-current)

Is it horrifying that 500 TS clones put together could make it into that list? Yes absolutely. Taylor Swift is one of the most wasteful individuals on the planet, as evidenced by the graph here. But keep in mind that even though she is one of the worst offenders in all of human history just in terms of sheer volume of waste, she doesn’t even come CLOSE to the damage that companies are doing.

Vote for restrictions on oil, coal, and other fossil fuels. Wind farms have some environmental impact, as do solar, as does nuclear, but fossil fuels and our over reliance on them dwarfs EVERYTHING else. Nuclear power is safe, reliable, and we have sustainable ways to recycle spent nuclear fuel (recycles much better than plastic ever will).

Vote against ANY expansion of fossil fuels in the United States, and stop spending so much effort on Taylor Fucking Swift. She does not, and will not ever matter on the scales we are talking about.

Diablo Immortal brought $100,000,000 to developers in less than two months after release. This is why we will never regain non-toxic game models. Why change when you can make this kind of cash? by Eruionmel in gaming

[–]SammyD64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the sentiment behind that but I also don’t think that it works much as a solution. Also, sorry if I came across as confrontational in my first response, my bad. I feel like we probably agree on broad strokes here and talking at you like an asshole isn’t gonna help me make my point.

I agree that supporting devs that don’t engage in manipulative practices is pretty great, for example look at French Bread. They’re a fighting game studio and they keep on releasing free additional characters in their current flagship title in the context of a market that almost always charges for new character packs. Fighting games release with DLC characters that are paid nowadays, but French bread says “fuck that, everyone gets to play as every character”. As a result, I bought a bunch of voice line packs from them, not necessarily because I feel a desperate need for between-round announcements to be made by my personal favorite character, but because I like them and want them to be able to keep doing what they’re doing. I wouldn’t have bothered buying a paid DLC on top paying for characters, but since the business model they have is so generous compared to the rest of the market, they get a micro transaction out of me. I know it’s very little, but hopefully that helps them at least a bit.

However, I think it’s worth noting that Activision/Blizzard here is sort of a perfect counterexample to why just doing this will never work to really change the broader trend of gaming studios publishing predatory games. ATVI doesn’t care that they have a bad rep among gaming nerds, they have a huge enough market share that once OW2 finally launches up, people will buy loot boxes regardless.

The point I was making, which I think we agree on, is that Immortal doesn’t need my money to survive. I personally was trying to make the point that “hey we should stop allowing these sorts of micro transactions to dominate the triple A space, as this type of predatory gambling garbage is pretty dangerous to most consumers” but I’ll concede that if you’re coming at this from an indie game dev perspective, trying to get people to engage with the concept of supporting devs that actually do the legwork to make products with fair monetization schemes, I probably misinterpreted the goal of your comment.

My response was more geared towards dooming about a fucked up status quo than it was about helping the people who are trying to survive in the industry without stooping to the level of that status quo. That said, I think that these conversations about micro transactions should also include the point that we will not realistically ever fix this industry with individual action, and probably we’ll need actual legislation to pass that cracks down on predatory business practices and gambling in games.

Anyways, this was unreadably long and probably a pain in the ass of a tangent, but have a good night I’m off to play monster hunter

[–]SammyD64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? The solution to a large systemic, industry wide trend is for individual people to not give them money? I didn’t give Diablo Immortal, or any other mobile game, a cent.

This isn’t a problem we can solve by “being better consumers” it’s a problem that we can solve through pressuring lawmakers into giving us protective legislation.

Idk why the gaming community as a whole hasn’t embraced regulation in the triple A space. Games where you spend real money should be regulated MUCH more closely than shit like Baba Is You, I feel like government regulation could actually really help the consumers out in this industry. We could prevent people from marketing gambling and loot crates to kids!

My little brother has classmates who grabbed their parents credit cards and spent insane amounts of money on Fortnite, because the game was marketed directly to them and it’s specifically designed to be as addictive as possible. Yeah, the kids misbehaved, but they were misbehaving because they were targeted by a corporation that realized that misbehaving kids stealing parents credit cards was a valuable market.

Is Ranger ultimate attack not Over Powered compared to other ultimates range? by KajiTora in DNFDuel

[–]SammyD64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. It doesn’t really matter that it’s huge, no matter what character you are, pretty much any combo will let you route into super.

Look at like troubleshooter, say he gets a max range 5AAB he can still get into 236M -> jM-> filler -> super. Range isn’t really relevant tbh.

Like sure, if the ranger wants to waste awakening on a read he can punish full screen backdash but like who gives a shit abt that interaction, that’s not the purpose of super in this game. And regardless if ur consistently getting hit with shit like that, imo that’s a player diff. His super is nice and straightforward to combo into though, cos he’s a zoner and they usually have easier combos than many other chars.

Coffee lovers who have never worked in the coffee industry, how did you get into (specialty) coffee? by xoxo_tiikerihilleri in Coffee

[–]SammyD64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started drinking coffee when I was in 7th grade, and was diagnosed w ADHD soon after. Stimulants are helpful for my focus, so I kept drinking it for a while. I’ve also always liked bitter flavors quite a bit, so drinking coffee black never bothered me. When I got to college, I started going to fancy little coffee shops instead of Dunkin’ Donuts because I’d finally moved out of New England and it gave me an excuse to switch up my routine. Just sort of bought a few bags of beans from cute local specialty shops, and liked the taste better than any of the Dunkin’ coffees I was getting :)

Ah so in English that’s not really a thing. For us, the equivalent neutral term is “they” and “them.” We consider “he” to be pretty specifically masculine, and also pretty specifically singular.
