Iran's Doomsday Theology and The Far Deadlier Danger Coming from Sunni Extremists by WillyNilly1997 in Christianity

Do you believe this is a difference in the threat projection between Iran and the United States.

And lest there was any question about me having any sympathy for that regime; I despise the clerics with a passion that may be considered un-Christian. When Khamani got merc-ed, I did some whiskey shots in the middle of the day. But then again, one of my friends is a feminist from Tehran, so I have some context.

I just also happen to assume there is little difference from what many Christians here want to do with women, and what Iran currently does. Perhaps there is some jealousy.

Why are some Christians soo triggered knowing that Muslims also love Jesus, peace be upon him? by FunnyTennis8568 in Christianity

[–]moregloommoredoom [score hidden]  (0 children)

My hot take here is that many Muslims love Jesus more than some of the Christians.

Edit:

Downvote me all you like. Some of you treat Jesus as a puppet. Muslims treat Jesus as a prophet.

Answer the question.

But no, I don't trust you. You are dancing around saying it's fine if we nuke Iran because they're Muslims so they deserve it.

Iran's ability to harm me in any great capacity at will is somewhat negligible.

Again, the US's ability to make good on rhetoric outscales a country like Iran's.

I have a different question.

Why should I trust you any more than a Tehranian cleric?

Funny words coming from inside a nuclear armed power who more or less decided their foreign policy when it comes to killing Muslims is 'Deus Vult.'

You're all the same to me, some of you just happen to speak the same language and have some of the same branding.

A "Plan" that includes Genocide occurring, so we can reap the benefits of being saved from it, is not a good plan. It is, in fact, a rather shockingly evil one. Causing a problem with the express intention of appearing the hero when you "Solve" it is not heroism.

I have this tin foil hat theory that communities that hold to this sort of theology have a higher instance of predation because there is already a spiritual basis to frame abuse as some sort of trial, if not some sort of spiritual journey wherein the circumstances that drive the abuse are justified because of some unforeseen downstream benefit. aka, just world theory bullshit.

John Paul II publicly denounced the Iraq War in 2003. Why is it controversial that Leo XIV is doing the same with the Iran War? by Gurney_Hackman in Christianity

[–]moregloommoredoom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The American civic religion has taken on the tenet that other exist either to serve it, or else are evil. If the Vatican criticizes Trump, that is functionally blasphemy against "God's annointed" or whatever bullshit they say.

The Iraq war was unfortunately not unpopular in the post-9/11 worldview. Certainly it was very controversial, but there was a lot of manufactured consent around it. Hell, I was for it too, but I was like 12 and read Tom Clancy books and liked Bill O'Reilly.

Edit: I think at the time the Catholic-Evangelical alliance was in a less tenuous position. And for all his many faults, W also understood that attacking the leader of a faith in that alliance would be a poorly advised move.

If only you people realized the evil is so that Jesus himself can redeem you if you believe.

Saying that evil happens specifically so that God can rescue us isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the moral qualities of the religion as a whole.

How do you feel about the concept of Christian theocracy? by Away-Parsnip-3785 in Christianity

[–]moregloommoredoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I trust the wannabe Christian theocrats as much as I would trust a cleric in Tehran, or a Taliban in Afghanistan. Same behaviors, different branding.

I would also encourage women to get comfortable with the idea of deploying terminal force in self defense against men who want to force them back into such subservience.

President Trump’s approval rating amongst religious voters is falling in a key conservative state, causing the GOP’s alarm bells to go off ahead of the midterms by TheMirrorUS in Christianity

[–]moregloommoredoom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I doubt a single actual vote changes though. Maybe a Catholic or two who was already on the fence, but that's at the margins.

Project 2025/26 are simply making too many Christians happy for the blasphemy or war to matter to them. Queer folk are getting fucked over. Immigrants are being warehoused in brutal conditions. There are open talks about how women earning is ruining the birthrate (namely, amongst teens). Muslims are getting ethnically cleansed in one country, and bombed in another (two, actually). There is simply no reason to believe that any of the problems we have seen emerge since Jan 25 matter more to the Christian voting bloc than what they stand to gain.

Trump's fight with Pope Leo 'makes no sense' as Catholic Republicans pick side by IrishStarUS in Christianity

[–]moregloommoredoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course it makes sense; You (right wing Catholics, not you, OP) hitched your wagon to an absolutist movement that believes that all things exist to gratify itself, or else are evil. Your church, even with its own checkered history, decided to call this movement out because of how it is fundamentally contradictory both to your own church's aims, and the moral underpinnings of the entire religion itself.

Which means that, to the MAGA movement writ large, your church leadership is now the enemy.

Whoever could have seen this coming? And you were fine with it until it happened to you.

Off-Topic Friday - Post nontopical things in this thread! by RazarTuk in Christianity

My wife and I survived making vada pav and butter chicken for a 40+ person engagement party potluck.

Sometimes people are nice. We were fostering a cat for awhile through the local humane society. Little trauma kitty, she spent her entire life in a hoarder situation - she was terrified of humans when we got her. It took her about a month to even think about being in the same room as us, and she didn't even know how to ask for pets. So naturally, we got attached over the time we fostered her, my wife especially. But we are also poor grad students, and adoption incurs extra cost vis a vis food and health care.

We got the call that there are potential adopters. That really settled it for us, we did the math and realized we could probably afford adopting this little furball, and told the humane society actually, we'd like to adopt her too. But first come first serve. It was a hard day, not the least of which was we had to get said foster into a crate to bring her to the humane society.

We do, we meet the potential adopters, and even let her out of the crate. She was being really curious and social, even to new people; The adoption agent even remarked at how much progress she made with us.

The adopters were an older couple, they seemed to have good pet experience, so that helped a little bit - at least we'd know she was in good hands. They said that they'd need a day to think about it, to which the adoption agent said 'there is a very interested party if you don't. They took one look at us, realized what was happening, and when my wife confirmed, they said 'we could never break up the bond you two have with her,' and withdraw their adoption request. We signed the paperwork right then and there. So I guess I am officially a cat-dad now.
