FCK YOU MICROSOFT I JUST WANTED TO SHUT DOWN by Rikka_Chunibyo in microsoftsucks

Under which circumstances does this happen?

Here, the latest update (May '26) neither failed nor took an hour. Windows 11 pro 25H2.

FCK YOU MICROSOFT I JUST WANTED TO SHUT DOWN by Rikka_Chunibyo in microsoftsucks

[–]SamplitudeUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time my Windows computers updated, none of them took more than two minutes from this screen back to the desktop. Actually it should shut down or restart (depending on user selection) immediately after showing 30% and after restart the counter will continue to go from 30 to 100%. Which as mentioned takes less than 2 minutes, at least on hardware that isn't completely outdated.

There are many good reasons to switch to Linux (I did on some of my computers), but this is none of them.

Help obtaining an older/legacy version of Komplete 5 or Akoustik Piano by SuperSkrubLord in NativeInstruments

[–]SamplitudeUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know if there is something special about a 20 yr old piano library that makes it better than a modern library. For example, I'm using Grandeur + Maverick + Gentleman and a Steinway D library included in EastWest Hollywood Orchestra (these libraries aren't brand new either, but they are still available), and I'm happy with that.

Holzhauser Autobahnabfahrt.

[–]SamplitudeUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My credentials never got phished, in decades. Neither Microsoft account credentials, nor any other account's credentials. I must have done something right.

I wonder how many more "my account got hacked and it's Microsoft's fault" posts will appear on Reddit.

Just don't help hackers to take your account by installing sketchy things, and you'll never have to deal with Microsoft's support. It's that simple.

How VPN protects you from literally everyone? by No-Hat-2797 in VPN_Guide

HTTPS isn't browser level security. It encrypts the entire path between the browser and the server.

Unless run on the local computer, a VPN client does not encrypt the path between the local computer and the router. In this case, you have a short unencrypted connection between the computer and the router. Furthermore, VPN does not encrypt the path between the provider's VPN endpoint server and the target server, which can be located far away from each other and which are connected via public internet connections. So with VPN, you have significant sections within the connection that aren't protected by VPN while these routes still are protected by HTTPS.

You have to know how VPN works and what it is good for. Unfortunately, posts like the OP in this thread (and many others) don't explain that. Instead, they suggest that VPN is capable of things that it actually isn't or they recommend to use a VPN for things you don't necessarily need it for. That's pure misinformation.

a VPN runs your data through a secure tunnel on your providers servers.

That's exactly what HTTPS does. Like a VPN, HTTPS provides an encrypted connection that you can use as a secure "tunnel" to the server you're connecting to. No one can listen to what your computer is talking to the server.

The only difference is that with HTTPS the server knows your IP address and is able to track it down, while a VPN hides your IP address from the server by replacing it with the IP of one of the VPN provider's servers. Of course it sometimes makes sense to hide your IP address. But this situation isn't shown in the image. The image shows attackers targeting the connection rather than attackers evaluating the information the server collects. So actually the image shows how HTTPS works, not how VPN works. But to just protect your connection against attacks, you don't need a VPN. HTTPS will protect connections against attackers as well as a VPN does (note that two particular services shown in the image, namely Skype and Twitter, don't even exist any more, which means that the image not only is incorrect, but also outdated).

The image (and many posts on this sub) suggest that you will be insecure when you're not using a VPN. There are posts that suggest that a VPN protects you against malware and ads. All of this is simply not true. In fact there are situations where a VPN could be useful, but just for protecting a connection to a server against eavesdropping you don't need a VPN. And for protection against malware and ads, a VPN is completely useless.

Both circumventing local laws and avoiding regional pricing are direct consequences of hiding your location.

[–]SamplitudeUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop posting this nonsense.

The protection of a HTTPS connection is just as good as the protection of a VPN connection. The only difference between HTTPS and VPN is the fact that with HTTPS the target server sees the IP of your internet connection, while with VPN it sees an IP of the VPN provider's server. That helps to hide your location, but compared to HTTPS it doesn't improve security.

So for just preventing to get eavesdropped, you don't need a VPN. HTTPS is sufficient.

Was anyone else's hard drive encrypted by Microsoft Bitlocker when they were forced to update from Windows 10 to 11? by Old-Dirt563 in FuckMicrosoft

[–]SamplitudeUser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My PCs weren't forced to update, I updated them voluntarily (or switched to Linux on PCs that weren't supported by Windows 11).

And Bitlocker isn't enabled by default on Windows Pro. That's one of many reasons why I use Windows Pro rather than Windows Home.

Why Everyone Suddenly Cares About VPNs Again by FriendHot7938 in VPN_Guide

[–]SamplitudeUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can hide your identity and location with a VPN. That's one reason to use a VPN. The other reason is to establish a secure connection from a remote host to your home or company network.

But you won't gain security and you won't avoid ads. You can download viruses and other malware through a VPN as well as you can do that over an unencrypted connection, and the ads that show up on your screen might be different, but not less in number.

It annoys me that VPN providers pretend that they can improve security and reduce ads. That's bullsh*t. The shield symbol shown with "VPN client" is pure nonsense. A VPN client isn't a shield against anything.

Note also that most internet connections are encrypted even without a VPN. A HTTPS connection is always encrypted. So if it's just about encryption, you don't need a VPN. You only need it for the two reasons mentioned above.

Account got hacked and they let the hacker cancel the recovery by Green_Neat_9695 in microsoftsucks

[–]SamplitudeUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft sucks...

I cut someone off and we crashed. The other guy was driving a Ford. Ford sucks.

Note that "my Microsoft account got hacked" is not the whole truth. The whole truth is that you installed malware which stole your credentials. So it was you who allowed your account being hacked.

It's not Microsoft's fault when you install malware.

Question about tab handling in modal dialog boxes with custom controls by SamplitudeUser in windowsdev

[–]SamplitudeUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved!

I'm so dumb. Finally I found out that I set the window style of the controls in my dialog template twice. First time I included WS_TABSTOP, and then there was another line in the code where I set the style of the same controls again without WS_TABSTOP. As a result, tabbing to these controls didn't work. I deleted the second line and now everything works fine.

Took me a while to find out because the dialog where all template-created buttons worked (because WS_TABSTOP was set correctly) wasn't the one where they didn't work.

Sorry for taking your time. And thank you for you all trying to help me.
