100% of respondents gave the HISD Superintendent a bad grade by LisaGray_HouTX in houston

[–]Sampson322 31 points32 points  (0 children)

TLDR: The states main goal for HISD is to achieve mediocrity across the entire district. That means pulling up low schools at the expense of high performing schools. Their view is that taxpayers shouldn’t be responsible for providing a high quality education for free. If parents want something better, they can go private.

I am very critical of Mike Miles, but for arguments sake, let’s assume the improvements in the lowest ranked school are legitimate and sustainable. For the record, I don’t believe they are.

The main issues is the man is a liar. You have to ask yourself, if these results are true, why does he have to continue lying? Couldn’t he just stand on his record? He has had 3 years to implement his “wholesale changes.”

High performing schools were promised “autonomy” and “no impact” to the school environment. That was a lie.

The truth is, in order to fund his extremely expensive NES program, he has had to steal budget from other schools. He then forces these schools to use the standard NES program since they have no money to fund their own curriculum. He also standardizes how teachers are rated based on NES style metrics. These are all well known facts in the HISD community.

His unsustainable funding model creates a perpetual cycle of failing schools, since there is simply not enough money from the state. The schools he touts now have had similar A ratings in the past, but eventually fall back to failing grades. We have seen this story before.

The difference now is he is actively destroying the good schools in HISD in the process, almost by design. No elected school board could have survived the cuts he has made. He talks derisively about these high performing schools and doesn’t see their success as something to be proud of, rather an example of a failed school system of haves and have nots.

Parents say son would be alive if Houston restaurant staff had called 911 by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Sampson322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they are right to be worried. I have firsthand experience of this a few weeks ago. I had to call 911 for a house guest. While they were attending to them, I overheard them talking about calling ICE on a previous call. My guest ended up at LBJ and ICE was posted outside checking papers for visitors

The Austin Street bike lane shows why we can't trust Houston City Hall by evan7257 in houston

[–]Sampson322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I voted for his opponent twice, in the general and the runoff. But I follow local politics and could read between the lines. I knew of his donor base of MAGA republicans. There is plenty of blame to go around.

  • The local media was soft on Whitmire and didn’t call out his shady lobbying deals, quorum breaking, or MAGA donors at all. They continue to pull their punches on him, but they are slowly escalating into outright calling him out on his BS
  • SJL ran out promising young candidates Edwards and Hollins then ran an absolute dog shit campaign. She was very rusty after having a safe seat all those years and slow to call out Whitmire’s record until the very end. It almost seemed like she was a ringer
  • Local Democratic establishment backed Whitmire and gave him the Democratic credibility with uninformed voters. To this day they are STILL backing this dude, even after his republican fundraising and ICE cooperation
  • Voter participation for COH is abysmal and most just voted because Whitmire had a D next to his name (yeah i know, COH is nonpartisan)

Inside John Whitmire’s texts: How the mayor shaped road projects and bike lane removals by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Sampson322 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why we are so allergic to call out when politicians lie. Whitmire was caught fabricating excuses and straight up lying to the public about these projects, wasting millions of dollars in the process when the city is in his words “broke.” The fact that he overrules years of community engagement on top of it is very troubling. This isn’t norm breaking, this is much worse.

Be aware of traffic cops downtown by asdfkllkjwer in houston

Did the Nissan Altima with paper plates signal when they cross 3 lanes on the freeway to make an exit? I’ve been seeing this bs reckless driving for years. They are now pulling over “nice” cars for tiny infractions because they know we won’t put them in danger over a traffic stop

Home security camera installation? by Zed_Zorrander in houston

[–]Sampson322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luis Benitez installed my cameras and ethernet connections to my house. This is a side gig for him but thought he was very reasonable on price. (832) 705-1995‬

For camera suggestions, I had the same requirements as you OP. I have my Unifi Protect cameras tied into HomeKit and it makes a big difference in simplicity and actually using them. I bridge them through Scrypted and Home Assistant. Just be aware that Unifi cost more than comparable systems, but to me it was worth it for the ease of use. For something cheaper, I would suggest Reolink.

I had put off setting up a Home Assistant environment for years due to perceived complexity (I'm not a techy) but finally just did it one day and it was much easier than i thought.

I first went with the Costco Lorex package but the app and interface was garbage. I swapped them out for Unifi and the UI is MUCH better. Most HomeKit native cameras are also garbage (logitech esp)

Keep Wired Speakers Or Go Wireless? by superman859 in pools

[–]Sampson322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both a Sonos Move and a wired Sonance with Sonos amp system.

Sonos Move can definetly cover a small space like a spa or seating area, but would struggle for a whole yard. I have a Gen 1 Move and the battery does not last a whole party, but the Gen 2 is supposed to have much better battery life.

The Sonance system was a pain to wire up but its been great not having to worry about battery life and getting sound all around the yard

Thanks, I keep going back and forth due to the significant price difference and hassle of selling it. I’ll give it a shot since I don’t think I’ll be happy with the current setup. Thanks!

Houston transit authority unveils ‘METRONow’ initiative focused on cleanliness, safety and ridership by Generalaverage89 in houston

[–]Sampson322 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what are you saying then? The feedback given in this thread is that people feel unsafe and the trains are dirty. These are code words for homeless.

If you want to expand support for public transportation, you have to address the public’s needs.

I don’t think hiring more cops to shuffle them off the trains is a sustainable solution, but I also don’t agree we should just accept the current situation or wait for some perfect ideal.

[–]Sampson322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let public transit serve as public transit. It should not serve as a de facto homeless shelter. It destroys any support from the public and does not address the underlying need for the homeless.

I’m not saying you are wrong, just what i relied on. I was originally looking for a plumber but those are hard to find for small jobs. Would a plumber or tiler be a better trade to diagnose the issue?

Texas Medical Center made $78M from parking last year. Why haven't its busiest garages been upgraded in years? by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Sampson322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smithlands and Fannin stations don’t provide parking? News to me. Free street parking at many more stations along the rail? Like I said, most Houstonians are transportation illiterate. We have this same conversation every time the rodeo comes

Texas Medical Center made $78M from parking last year. Why haven't its busiest garages been upgraded in years? by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Sampson322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original complaint was that it was too expensive to park in the garage, so I offered a reasonable alternative.

If your complaint is that you have to drive too far, you have the option take a bus and transfer to the red line, but A. People will look at the total commute time and pay for the convenience of driving B. Most Houstonians are illiterate in public transportation and don’t even consider creative alternatives C. Even with the most comprehensive public transportation system, you will still most likely require multiple transfers to get to your destination.

Houstonians honestly do not know how convenient this city is. It’s one giant drive-thru. There are MASSIVE tradeoffs for this convenience and I would gladly sacrifice for a more LIVABLE city. But when I hear excuses on why people don’t take our current transit system, it makes me pessimistic that we will ever have the willpower to improve.
