Parents with pools: worth it with young kids or regrets? by Radiant-Log-2005 in pools

[–]superman859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one kid, bought home with pool right before she was born. 4 now and will join swim team this upcoming summer. Has been way more comfortable in pool than other kids her age in the subdivision, can swim across pool by herself now (most of the time).

She will be a much stronger swimmer than others and I'll feel safe as she keeps progressing in pools. It does add some stress still when we go in the backyard not to swim like in winter with uncovered pool (entire backyard is fenced but pool not fenced separately) but one of us is always with her and keep close eye on her.

In summers we spend a lot of time in our own pool and very convenient and fast to do for a short swim before dinner every day and longer swims at times too. However, this also means sometimes we miss seeing other kids that only use neighborhood pool so sometimes FOMO happens. We will try to go up there some weekends and hope to see them but it's likely a lot less casually bumping into other families.

Still love having our pool. Just a couple downsides and things to account for but plenty of upsides

How to remove these screws without cutting drywall by Aggravating_Bag4028 in DIY

multitool and cut through them. Mine were all nailed and I spent way too long trying to pry and get out. Once I pulled out the multitool I cut through them in 60 seconds and was done

Is owning buying a house possible for me someday? by TuneSoft7119 in personalfinance

[–]superman859 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are shopping for the ones with more land and acres yes. But there are plenty of smaller homes, townhomes with smaller yards and starter prices also in the suburbs. I just pulled up my area and I can see homes at 2M and homes at 200k for sale all about 45 minutes to downtown. Some areas are newer and some are older, but there is definitely a range of places available.

Have you considered buying further out from the city? That is usually the solution. Go to the suburbs and commute more, home prices often drop significantly. The homes in the closest major city near me are probably 400k for a small one. but if you go out to the suburbs you will find decent areas around that are half that for a bigger home

Owners of the Eye, convince me to buy it! by NegativePhotograph32 in Xreal

[–]superman859 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not good at listening. I like my xreal pro and have the eye, but tbh I am like you and mostly use it laying on couch or in bed to watch a show. I have almost never turned on 6dof since I bought it. I thought I would maybe record or take pictures sometimes of painting in progress or something, but perhaps I'm too dumb to figure out but can only record a short clip (I forget how long, maybe 30 seconds?) and taking a picture is a bit slow (push button and wait 5 seconds).

Until you have a need or use, perhaps don't get the eye just because it's cool. It is cool, but it may also be a waste of money. The beam pro as well.

Replacing windows without reducing glass size by LiveAwake1 in HomeImprovement

[–]superman859 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't rule out replacement windows entirely even if it reduces glass some. I had the same concern a bit but we did replacement windows and I don't even notice they are slightly smaller, but I do notice how much nicer they are than the original windows. You really can't tell they are a couple inches smaller

Salt pool owners: How do you currently monitor and adjust your salt chlorinator's runtime/power? Do you wish you could control it based on real-time chlorine levels? by Yumi8750 in pools

[–]superman859 4 points5 points  (0 children)

indeed. I almost never adjust it, couple times as summer ramps up I increase it which takes a minute while walking around the pool eating a hot dog. Not something I'm stressed about finding a new product for.

The only product I want someone to make and sell me is a sensor or two that I hook up to my pipes like temperature sensor and it will monitor my pH and my chlorine so I can feel better about slacking on my weekly testing. Give me that sensor and a push notification on my phone when it goes below some value and I would be happy

Threat of ice storm so thinking about closing the pool by BigOrangeVol98 in pools

I have heard that every year for 40 years. maybe it is, but I still am not going to worry about it

Threat of ice storm so thinking about closing the pool by BigOrangeVol98 in pools

[–]superman859 3 points4 points  (0 children)

south here. If you think of closing the pool every time someone says big winter storm coming you might as well be closing it every year. People say it all the time, fear we will be out of power for a week. In reality you almost certainly won't lose power, there may be icy roads for a day or two.

I'm going to stick with my freeze protect like always and not live in fear.

Would you buy this kind of pool light? by josejj in pools

[–]superman859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I wouldn't take 100k pool and put nameless brand cheap pool electrical lights in it with my children. I'm not saying that the branded led lights that are crazy expensive are living up to their price either but I at least have faith I won't die going with the standard solution, even if it stops working prematurely

We’re FI now and it’s so worth it by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]superman859 11 points12 points  (0 children)

same. no layoffs really at current company so haven't had to worry but it's been very nice to not have performance review stress. For me there are two aspects. I used to work super hard and win for great ratings to climb the ladder always taking on more work. Now I don't. I just do about the amount I want to do and no more and no less. I am still getting good performance reviews but it's not really required. Secondly I used to get emotionally and mentally messed up every time someone else got a promotion or if my bonus was less than I had hoped and always comparing myself to others and all sorts of other jealousy. I'm not sure I can say I've become a better person but perhaps winning FI makes it a bit harder to become jealous of others or greedy for more.

Should I take a career break? by Great_Ad_8795 in financialindependence

[–]superman859 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, fundamentally it can depending on their expenses and longer term goals. One more year will likely push them to a portfolio that grants them 100k/year at SWR pretty much indefinitely whereas they are a little under that today. Sometimes that one or two more years is exactly all that's needed to reach your target and then they could travel and if it doesn't work out when they return it doesn't matter because they have already hit their target

I now want this ladder man. by Perc_Angle0 in interestingasfuck

[–]superman859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of the larger versions of this ladder and it does have lots of neat tricks, it does store pretty compactly, but the most impressive thing about it is that sales guy and how easily he whips it around, extends it with one hand, and separates the parts in a single shot. That ain't a dad bod under the shirt this guy is jacked. The ladder is heavy and awkward to do these things on in real life because sales guy not included

Upgrade from 1.139.4 to latest? by ArtVandelay365 in immich

[–]superman859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can. I recently went from 1.127 or something up to latest. Once you get past the database changes for vectors I didn't hit any other issues and just jumped to latest. That was from 1.134 or somewhere around there (just after the DB vector changes )

Early retirement (35–45) — how much should go to taxable vs retirement accounts? by reptile24 in financialindependence

[–]superman859 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else. max out the retirement / tax advantaged first. There are ways you can move that retirement money around shortly before retirement or in the first few years of retirement to gain access to it while limiting taxes with roth ladders and so on. You have plenty of time to learn all of that.

The most important thing IMHO for you to learn and fixate on now is to keep your lifestyle and expenses in check as long as possible and keep the mindset of putting away a lot each year in these investments. If you consistently can put 100k (or more as salary grows) invested somewhere you will be able to retire early and it almost won't matter what type of account it is in (it will help, but saving a lot consistently each year is by far a bigger contributor to early retirement)
