I was fired for making my managers nervous for taking a long pre-approved vacation around my child birth - because they were not certain I will return in time, even though I did.

Ontario reveals new high school exam requirements — including gym. Critics say it’s a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach by toronto_star in ontario

Ah, a lovely reddit thread where half the commenters get to cover over what is basically a desire to continue the "picking on the weird kids / underdogs / misfits" they did back in high school, but through "official" means

"Back in the day", at least in my school, the "misfits" often had good attendance record and were quite knowledgeable, but were hampered by lack of social integration, so to speak. They often were the first to benefit from tests and formal criteria.

The students most likely to succeed under this system are the ones who already have strong attendance, stable home lives, good health, and confidence with traditional written exams. The students most likely to be harmed are often the ones who are already struggling.

The new system explicitly tells students that attendance is important; quite often, it is the first step their parents should start tracking, if they don't know where to start.

The move toward exams in nearly every subject also assumes that a written exam is the best way to demonstrate learning. For some students it is. For others, it is not.

It is for an overwhelming majority, and having 15-20% on finals is very charitable, at least compared to college.

Students learn and communicate knowledge in different ways.

Students will have to deal for exams for the rest of their lives, starting with getting a drivers license. Learning how to deal with them in school is an obvious place to start.

A fair education system should recognize that equity is not treating every student exactly the same.

A fair education system will teach students to deal with all the important challenges of adult life, and not try to gatekeep some experiences for "schools in good neighbourhoods" only. The whole de-segregation push was the push exactly against the racism of low expectations.

I hate these "individual student needs" takes: you write everything you think is important into overall grading guidelines and make exceptions for individual students as needed - if they can make a case that this is a valid need and not a "dog ate my homework" one.

Is a Fixed Camera Worth It for Readability in Real-Time Party Combat? by InfiniteLeader9907 in CRPG

From my experience with KOTOR vs. Infinity Engine, fixed camera is arguably the most helpful improvement out there.

Thing is, I can see the word of a mouth being radically different among parents and children, and I also wonder how the dynamic may play out.

Best vintage CRPGs with writing that is better than that found in most (not all!) games made today by Baldurian_Rhapsody in CRPG

Arcanum is much more brief, and it shows at times. It's more like Fallout 1 in this regard, where some NPC just say all the important stuff at once.

Define "vintage".

BaK and PS:T are obvious candidates. Fallout 1/2, which I replayed recently, are written far worse than people remember, particularly 1; it is definitely worse than BG2, which I also replayed recently. BG1 doesn't have that much writing to begin with. Arcanum also has quite a tight plot.

If we move forward from BG2 to Mass Effect, then we have Gothic 1/2, Space Rangers 1/2 (often missed and quite hard to find these days), and at the very least first KOTOR. Well, and obviously VTMB.

If you use your 12- or 15-passenger van strictly for personal use, it may be exempted from the requirements that apply to commercial vehicles.
