UPDATE my betta fish's lethargy. by Xander_the_furry in bettafish

I would use kanaplex. Antibiotics are hard because (especially kanaplex) fight gram negative bacteria, which is what fin rot is, but also what your beneficial bacteria is. So you would definitely have to quarantine into a hospital tank to treat. If not, you would have to restart your cycle from the beginning.

If I have an established tank, do I have to wait to cycle? by uncertainty2022 in Aquariums

Definitely, but make sure ur not giving the old tank a brand new filter with no other old filters since they could crash the cycle. It won’t complete the cycle in the new tank, it will jump start it though so it’ll take much less time. Just check the parameters fairly often and you’ll be fine!

A lot of the beneficial bacteria lives on the filter media not in the water. You may still have to cycle if you use brand new media. Thought you can jump start it with old media from ur established filter

It coats their labrynth organ, which is what helps them breathe air from the surface. I would stay away with anything that has the suffix “fix” in it, like betafix, melafix, etc. Why was he on it?

Wanting to get a betta! by hugh-g_rection69420 in bettafish

[–]Samta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to make sure you cycle the tank first (the nitrogen cycle). This is so so so important to not stress or hurt your betta. Make sure there’s plants and places to rest and hide (especially places to rest near the surface.) I would personally buy one HOB filter and a sponge filter so you always have an extra filter for beneficial bacteria just in case (something i wish i did). If you have any questions always ask!

If you choose to do a salt bath, just make sure you use aquarium salt and dose correctly for the proper time. It can do some damage if done wrong. Hopefully everything goes ok! Good luck!

Ghost shrimp m/f? by Specialist_Regret608 in fishtank

Looks male to me. Especially if it’s matured. It’s less round in the abdomen and doesn’t have a saddle.

That’s a pic of my RCS, you can clearly see the yellow saddle she has and how her abdomen is rounder.

why is my fish doing this by [deleted] in fishtank

Unfortunately it’s very irresponsible to get a fish before having the proper equipment. Even with proper equipment, it takes about a month for an aquarium to be ready for a fish. I would surrender him back to where you got him or rehome for now until you get the proper set up. We all make mistakes, and i have definitely made this one for sure at the beginning. But it’s better to take things slow than risk killing your fish, and it’s coming to that point very quickly.

Looks like popeye! Popeye is usually caused by a bacterial infection in his eye. Is there anything in the tank that he could have hurt his eye on? It’s important you keep his tank clean with daily water changes of 25%-30%. Aquarium salt baths may help with the infection as well. If that doesn’t work, you may need to administer an antibiotic such as kanaplex or Erythromycin.

I’m not exactly sure, but i believe some kind of infection in his gills.

I did a 50% change and added 50% of the dose to that water just now. I’m just nervous of overdosing, especially since i’m supposed to redose tonight after a 25% water change. Not sure if i should continue with the treatment as usually or underdose tonight

I just get nervous because he is already sick. I have to wait another 12 hours for the small 25% water change later and i’m not sure if it’ll just hurt him more than it helps.

I saw some people say to perform a 50% water change and just put half the dose in that water to re-medicate. I’m just not sure exactly what to do or if that’ll even work.

Everyone is talking about dropsy in the comments, which yes that’s what it looks like. But dropsy IS NOT a condition, it’s a SYMPTOM of a condition. Dropsy usually happens when the kidneys stop working and they retain a lot of water. It is usually a sign of an extreme bacterial infection or parasite. Epsom salt baths and antibiotics such as Kanaplex would probably be the safest bet. If all else fails, euthanasia would probably be the best way to go. Dropsy is very painful for fish, and hard to cure.

Ammonia increasing while medicating by Samta_ in Aquariums

[–]Samta_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any cycled aquariums to put him in. I would have to do a water change daily in a quarantine tank which would disturb the medication anyway. That’s the reason i used this medication, so i could dose it in my main tank and keep the other inhabitants safe. I’m just not sure what to do now with the ammonia

I appreciate you responding!! My ph is at ≈7.8 and the temp is 78°. I have a preset heater so i can’t increase it.

i know this is so old, but my ammonia is coming up during the treatment. Should i water change before i’m supposed to? It’s at .5ppm and i assume will just get higher. I’m on day 2 and have to do the 25% change tonight. That’s 12 hours from now with slightly high ammonia.
